No fewer than 77, 827 candidates will write the third round of the Professional Qualifying Examination for teachers nationwide.

Lagos state has the highest number of teachers that registered for the examination with 8, 223 while Oyo has the second highest with 5, 599 candidates.

Sokoto state has the lowest number of candidates sitting for the examination with 369 candidates.

The examination will start Friday and end on Saturday in 47 centres across the country.

The Registrar, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.

Ajiboye said that majority of the teachers sitting for this third round diet are from private schools.

He said the council has strengthened the capacity of its staff to ensure an effective monitoring of the examination.

Ajiboye said that about six Nigerians living in the United States of America and Canada wrote the last examination.

He said: “Nigerians outside the country are taking the examination online. Six of them from outside the country wrote the last one. We had two from US and four candidates from Canada.

“Teachers are now rushing to enroll for the PQE. Some of them are now embracing the use of technology in the teaching profession.”

The Registrar insisted that the December 31st deadline adopted by the National Council on Education to register remains.

“In the last NCE in Port Harcourt, River state, the December 31st deadline was reaffirmed by the Minister of Education and we are going to enforcement it.

“We will start monitoring by January 2020. The monitoring will cover both public and private schools.”

Well received, thanks.Received, thank you.Noted with thanks.

It is no longer news that the new minimum wage bill has been signed into law. It is also no longer news that states like Lagos and Kaduna have started paying while poorer states like Adamawa and Nassarawa have indicated interests to pay. What is news, however, is the silence of governors from the South-South and South-East regions, especially the oil-rich states. Many workers in Rivers State have cast doubt over the ability of the Rivers State Government to pay the new minimum wage Speaking during a courtesy visit by the President of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Bobboi Kaigama at the Government House Port Harcourt in November 2018, Governor Nyesom Wike said among other things that whatever minimum wage is finally resolved, the Rivers State Government will pay. On December 24th 2018, the governor presented the Four Hundred and Eighty Billion Naira 2019 budget before the state house of assembly. A substantial part of the recurrent budget proposed for 2019 was for the payment of staff salaries and overheads to ministries, departments and agencies to enable them effectively discharge their responsibilities to the people. A personnel cost of N79, 585,058,808.60 alone constituted about 50 per cent of the entire recurrent expenditure. The governor said that the increase in the figure for 2019 was as a result of the need to provide for the anticipated increase in the minimum wage for civil servants. With this, he said, the State Government will be in a position to pay the minimum wage whenever the National Assembly approves it. “We also made provisions for staff promotion arrears and new recruitments into the State’s civil service”. On the 18th of April 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the N30,000 minimum wage bill into law but the federal ministry of labour and unions resolved their differences months later. When will the Rivers State Government begin paying the new minimum wage that it made visions for in the 2019 budget? Why has the Nigeria Labour Congress’ Rivers State Chapter led by Comrade Beatrice Otubo who repeatedly called for a living wage for workers all of a sudden silent?

Our Governor Wike is mute about new minimum wage while Abia State Governor has constituted a committee for implementation of the new minimum wage. Could this be the case of "the first shall be the last" for Rivers State workers?

Implement minimum wage before Dec. 31 or risk strike, NLC tells govs
December 12, 2019 in News, News Update

Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

The Nigeria Labour Congress may shutdown some states over the non-implementation of the N30, 000 new minimum wage signed into law in April this year by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The NLC have given the governors of these states December 31 to conclude all negotiations on the consequential adjustment and begin full implementation of the wage.

It said that some states have so far failed to setup a negotiating committee between them and organised labour on the consequential adjustment of salaries.

The NLC stated this in a communique issued at the end of a one day stakeholders’ meeting on the implementation of the new national minimum wage in Abuja.

The communique was jointly signed by NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, its General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, and National Chairperson, Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side), Comrade Abdulrafiu A. Adeniji.

It noted that organised labour could not guarantee industrial harmony in any state that failed to implement the new wage.

Some of the state who are yet to setup negotiating committee include: Bauchi, Yobe, Rivers, Benue, Gombe, Kwara, Imo, Osun and Ekiti.

Others are: Oyo, Anambra, Taraba, Cross River, Ogun, Enugu, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi and Delta States.

It noted that oranised labour in the states would work in harmony to ensure that all workers enjoy the full benefit of the new national minimum wage.

It commended Kaduna, Kebbi, Lagos, Adamawa and Jigawa State for the implementation and payment of the new national minimum wage.

The communique reads: “Each State should immediately convoke an emergency State Executive Council meeting and State Congress of all workers to brief them of the outcome of the stakeholders’ meeting on the new national minimum wage implementation;

“States that are still on the discussion table (Category 2) should expedite discussions to conclude the negotiations on or before the 31st of December 2019;

“States which have not commenced discussion should quickly constitute a Negotiating Committee and expeditiously conclude discussions on salary adjustment consequent on the new national minimum wage on or before 31st December, 2019; and

“In the event that any state fails to comply with these resolutions on or before 31st December, 2019, organised labour would not guarantee industrial harmony in such states.”

EXCO approves more development projects

The administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has approved the payment of 13th month salary for all the civil servants and staff of all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the state, to celebrate the forthcoming Christmas with their loved ones.

The decision, part of the outcome of the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting, was disclosed by the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, who briefed newsmen on behalf of the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, who was absent.

It would be recalled that the Ugwuanyi administration has been consistent with the payment of the 13th month salary as Christmas bonus - a gesture the organized labour has described as “unprecedented in the history of Enugu State,” which “we never asked or agitated for”.

Briefing newsmen yesterday, Hon. Edeoga disclosed that the state government, in the spirit of Christmas, has paid the December salary of all civil servants and staff of MDAs in the state, adding that the 13th month salary will be paid “in a few days from now”.

The commissioner, who addressed the press, alongside the Commissioners for Works and Infrastructure, Finance, Chieftaincy Matters and Science and Technology, Engr. Greg Nnaji, Mrs. Adaonah Kene-Uyanwune, Dr. Charles Egumgbe and Sir. Carl Obi Kama, respectively, also disclosed that the council awarded contracts for more development projects worth over N700 million.
