President Muhammadu Buhari says the country’s domestic fuel consumption has dropped by more than 30 per cent, following the closure of land borders. President Buhari, who said this yesterday at his country home in Daura, while receiving a delegation of Katsina State Elders Forum, also said he had not given any date for the reopening of the land borders. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said in a statement issued yesterday that two months into the closure of Nigeria’s land borders to curb smuggling activities, especially rice, President Buhari’s administration was betting on same measure to rekindle the agriculture sector. The statement said the government’s directive would save the country billions of naira on import bills. The president, while speaking, hailed the actions taken by the President of Niger Republic, Muhammadou Youssoufou, including the dismissal of officials and a ban on use of the country as a dumping ground for Nigeria-bound smuggled goods. Brandstudio01: It's not a good development. We cant close our borders and task neighboring countries to fight smuggling. Our problem is institutional. There is corruption in our customs, these officials are enabling the smuggling and making huge money from it. Fix the organization and you've fixed the problem. Rice is not the only commodity affected, every business must not suffer because of only rice. This is what we get when we allow illiterates run the economy. 93 Likes 9 Shares |

Now is supposed to be the peak periods for our smuggling neighbour's. Buhari just spoilt business for them all, no rice to export for them, to cheap fuel to import. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Najyin: Is that why barawo bubu increased his food budget in Aso Rock after posing with Milo sachets when he was begging Nierians to give him a chance after three failed attempts to be employed by us So he won't be eating foreign rice there? Think o Oga, think before you allow yourself to be deceived. www.nairaland.com/attachments/7609966_145_jpeg793d0d09f2057871c6b966c47bdbb7a2 Firefire: 2 Likes |

Ending January, 2020 was slated for the reopening. What is then "no date fixed?". The people who have suggested shutting the borders did not consider Nigerians who are also doing legitimate haulage business across these borders. Such people's means of livelihood have been crippled and it's not like the government is one that provides jobs. Everything is poorly planned in Nigeria. 1 Like 1 Share |
