Wow! We still have a lot of surprises in this yulitide. Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps have just impounded my car. Asked what's my offence, they said, show me your phone and I turned my phone to him, and the guy said you are under arrest for driving with the aid of Google map on your mobile phones. Wawu!! I'm like seriously!! He said, madam it is a serious traffic offence. I asked to see the team lead, their team lead came and after hearing fro his collegue and me said, "the law forbids motorists from using mobile phones in any form while driving, as it can lead to accident". I can see you are using Google map on your phone. Madam it is distractive so follow us to our office.

This is unbelievable!! You see ba, I have an emergency and have requested for a ticket so I can deal with this later but they said No. I must drive to their office. Well ladies and gentlemen, I've been given a ticket of N4000 payable to Remita my offence is using GPS. They have my car and my keys and my drivers license. When I'm done paying to remita then I will be checked into national hospital for mental examination for using GPS while driving. The real mad folks are those who believe is an offence to drive with Google map. They called Google map a distraction. So if you are driving in Abuja, ditch the GPS and drive on, get to middle of the road stop and ask any road safety or traffic warder thus; oga where is the direction to Apo, Asokoro or just any where you are going. You don't need direction map. The worst kind of illiteracy is the illiteracy of a government.

Please if you have an opportunity to live in a saner place , now is the time to weigh your options and check out. A lot of things don't make sense here.
u were booked for use of phone while driving and they re right. Next time if u want to use ur GPS park properly off the road and use it.

Truth be told, the lady is 100% wrong and they are 100% right. I am assuming she was using google maps while driving otherwise they wouldn't have stopped her.

A lot of things can happen on the road in that split second one is staring at the map on his/her phone. The proper procedure is to pull in at a rest area, a petrol station or any other safe parking spot, memorise your route including landmarks, then move. Hanging a phone on the dashboard and driving while googling is very distracting. Later when they hit someone's child; like someone hit mine; they will be begging up and down and crying false tears. Using a phone while driving is dangerous.

I know that selfishness is ruling us here but we should try our best to consider other road users' safety even if we are not concerned about ours.

Technology is meant to make our lives better not worse.
hope your child is okay. I agree with what you said.

You all should reason like human. Using your phone while driving in Nigeria is an offense and even in other countries.
If you have to use GPS while driving, then u should install a GPS device which is not an offense in Nigeria or any other country.
Why criticizing the FRSC when they are trying to save her life and other road users (especially with this lady that's so ignorant of the rules of driving)? Every sensible driver in this country knows it's an offense to use your phone while driving now.
You want to use your phone for GPS in Nigeria? Then dont get caught !
Madam thanks for paying for your ignorance, go pick your car. Be smart next time

2. Next time, get a phone holder. Nobody can accuse u then.
3. They didn't ask for bribe, they told her to pay into a government account.
and where was it written that they wont arrest you if you have a phone holder,of you just made that up,, huh?

this app government just like make everything dey tight and difficult for everyone, if things are easy its assumed that they are not working and there is corruption, I've always challenged frsc that none of them upon all their gragra can pass drivers test in UK let alone drive there.

You want to check out because you were arrested for driving with Google maps. Okay. When you get to the other side, you will know that a lot of the things you do here excluding driving with google maps, is actually traffic offenses that we take for granted here - I wonder what other country you would port to, then.

Driving with the aid of Google map or any other sat nav isn't a traffic violation in anywhere the world except nigeria.....
The nonsense law won't stand...
They just bitter people no longer take wrong turns...
Thus ROI is dwindling...

At the risk of sounding like one of them, I have to agree I consider the use of GPS a distraction (more about the way we use it). So many times I have entered cabs and the driver would stare at his phone for seconds to get the route. I get really uncomfortable in those few seconds. Few times they look up and make sharp swerves.

However, I do not think the problem should be the use of GPS in its entirety. The problem should be the use of handheld devices and its resultant inattentive driving. I would prefer a situation where it can be set before driving and on speaker too. This is a better option, since so many persons would rather not hang their phones.

They issued a statement to this effect recently. You can look it up, juxtapose it with your situation and know if your case can be appealed.

Seizing your car is going too far though, your DL is enough.

I personally feel the issue is not with Google maps or stuff like that. The issue is that we have untrained drivers running around our streets.
If the requirements for obtaining a driver's licence were as strict as in some other countries (where you go thru exams, interviews, and actual driver tests before being handed a licence), people would drive better.

Ma’am You don’t have to look at your phone, google map has a voice assistance feature, by connecting with an auxiliary cord, you tend to hear the direction from you car speak, so loud and clear. So how about cars with imbedded gps on their dashboards? Google map on using while driving will warn you to keep your eyes on the road and don’t get distracted by it. This is absolute bullocks! People die from plane crash accident but that does not totally nullifies it good aspect thereby making air travel to be banned. What needs to be enforced here is the use of auxiliary cable with the google map while driving.

On saturday i had a wedding to attend at campbell place on Lagos island. I set my google map before driving out of my gate. I know my way to that environment but because that area is fraught with urchins and area boys. So assume the FRSC stopped me at any point and checked my phone would they have been right to arrest me for the use of google map while driving? Why is this country perpetually portraying itself as this backward in the comity of nations. I am ashamed to be a Nigerian.

Google map has voice prompt. You don't even have to look at it if you're educated and you know what you're doing. In 5 kilometre, turn left... In 10 kilometres, turn right....

Its easy and safe as long as you're not staring at it. I think this rule was made by someone that doesn't have a knowledge of how Google map works.

I think her story is half truth. Looking and checking out roads on a google map while you are actually driving is very dangerous. This poses a danger to yourself and to other road users and structures around.

It is okay to pull over and park properly and study your map before moving on. No one will quarrel with you for listening to gps instructions as you drive , but looking at a map as you drive could be due to a mental health problem and I support the referral for a mental health examination.

Bros from d bolded. Na u get serious mental problems. Jeez. In dis 21st century Nigeria is cursed

But frsc not too long ago released a rule that people should stop using Google maps on the road

She most likely held the phone in her hands while driving, that's why she was arrested.
If u want to use Google maps with your phone,it's better to get a phone holder in the car

The use of phone while driving constitutes an offence. It distracts attention and causes accidents, it is in our overall interest to maintain this law. Period! You committed an offence and was rightly punished.
