There are usually two explanations for such anomalies; one is the real reason for the action, the other is what the public gets told is the reason. Quota system is the reason nothing works in Nigeria. The educational system is consistently watered down to fit / reward the lifestyle of the lazy and uninterested people mostly from Northern Nigeria, while the deserving ones are being short changed and frustrated. Yet, we expect improvements in the country. This is the same scenario across all sectors of the Nigerian economy. The funny thing is that a level playing field devoid of or with very minor quota system would have helped the disadvantaged regions to improve and catch up, instead of the slowing down of every other region to make the disadvantaged regions look not too far left behind. Now we have a nation that is the laughing stock of others that were at par with it a few decades ago. The question is will this girl and others constantly being deprived like her not be better admitted based on merit than those ones with 180 and even less JAMB score? This is why when matters of development are being discussed, there is a wide gap in the understanding across the North and South of Nigeria. Nigeria should have remained with the regional / parliamentary system of government so that regions develop at their own paces. Sighs! ![]() traihit: |

OGHENAOGIE:I should ignore you because you are not the Op, but let me respond as follows : I don't do sentiment in my analysis of issues. Any opinion you can't support with facts is a lie. This op isn't the spokes person for ABU, and he rushed to spew this "There are some unique facts about ABU that we must appreciate which includes among so many others; ABU is the most cosmopolitan University in the whole of Africa not even Nigeria it’s no news that ABU Zr has students from each and every of the 774 local governments in which makes it a mini . lie." lie number 1. Also transparent admission should be published for the public to see. Everything else is a shame. When a school is called out like the case of ABU, it should be their position to show how transparent they have been in carrying out the admission process. Is that too hard for u? " |

When you read some of the comments here, you are almost forced to cry inward. That is the sorry state. |

MoIbrahim:Sir, I hope you made your research before bringing out all this statistics about the so called ABU, there are universities that receive more applications. You can check Jamb annual statistics. Sir, you can only justify this if you can tell us outrightly that all the candidates given admission performed quite well than this lady. Tribalism, nepotism and religion bigotry can't be separated from this aforementioned university and that's the main reason we are not going anywhere in this country. Lecturers from other regions are being sidelined in virtually all appointments, so stop given us all those 36 states stuffs. Please call a spade what it is. |

MoIbrahim:The public are well excused to be ignorant about admission process that is not completely transparent and the guidelines published. There are no published list of admitted students to validate all the claims made by the writer. There are also no verifiable facts stated by the writer. They could at least state the name of the top 7 and their scores from Niger State as claimed. Merit List should be publicly available for confirmation since they are supported by facts. Merit List that is still based on state of origin is not a pure merit list. Finally, I can easily debunk the statement that ABU has the highest number of qualified applicants because the record from JAMB lists Unilorin at the top spot and the figures do no match with those claimed by the writer. Ref: https://dailypost.ng/2019/05/23/jamb-names-uniilorin-abu-uniben-subscribed-universities/ If I can debunk one publicly available fact, then others in the writers statement are subject to questioning. |

When a close friend of mine was denied admission last year in UI with 319 in jamb no media carry such news as it is probably a normal thing for the high rank UI to do ? A lady was equally denied admission(medicine) with 320 in jamb in OAU, nobody cares about that either. Tribalism lives in blood @Op u just don't need to give them this much attention. Your eyes go soon clear when ABU is done implementing his new policy on medical school admission. Admitting southerner is largely affecting their every year turn out and still we won't appreciate that. |

ObongNizz:Why didn't she choose her state university? Because she knows 302 is to low for MBBS, ABU the most competitive university in the North, she has the 7th best result from her state, they can't admit more than 3 per state, because the max number of MBBS student they can accommodate is 120, 3*36=118, they also have matric students they must admit, even without catchment area or ELDS, she can't still get admitted, MBBS is a very competitive course, that's why she was awarded another course. Stop being a religion or tribal racist. My advice to you, stop hating, there are millions of Northerners, and Hundreds of Million of Muslims, that pray day and night again their enemies, haters, we pray our enemies will never prosper, evil will continue to be on their way, and they would never be fortunate enough to be able to touch us. So, stop being amoung those that our course will manifest on. I'm sure you also pray against your enemies |

Bedwyr:I don't mock other courses as I didn't study medicine and surgery. The truth is that medicine compared to other causes, is considered better with great prospect and advantage. 1. It's not graded. A student comes last in his class, they still call him doctor. 2.A doctor is always employed at a higher grade level than an anatomist. In fact it takes anatomist 10years Of hard work to reach the entry point of a doctor in the civil service. Etc. I hope this explains my point |

[quote author=MoIbrahim post=85057661]Honestly *the person who wrote this piece “Injustice to one is injustice to all” is completely ignorant of the process of admission in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria,* For those of us that wrote Jamb 3 times passed all and failed to secure admission whom also are from the catchment area of the University felt the same way but later got to understand the process & how it works! There are some unique facts about ABU that we must appreciate which includes among so many others; ABU is the most cosmopolitan University in the whole of Africa not even Nigeria it’s no news that ABU Zr has students from each and every of the 774 local governments in which makes it a mini . When it comes to teaching staff, ABU is the only record holder of having atleast 1 senior staff from each and every of the 36 states in Nigeria and it has remained so till date. So in essence not even the University of Abuja that is in the heart of Nigeria can boast of having students from all the 774 local governments or a staff from each of the 36 states in the Country. Then we should be proud of ABU Zr. I can personally attest to the fact that in each and every Departmental admission guideline clearly spells out three criteria’s and is religiously adhered to which includes: 1. Merrit list 45% of the total students admitted to the dept (Atleast 2 to 3 students with the highest score from each state). 2. Catchment area list 35% (like any other university in Nigeria ABU considers students from its selected States as it catchment area). & 3. Less Educationally developed states list 20% (in other to give candidates in some selected states that are not as educationally developed as the others a chance to be in ABU as they are at a disadvantage and cannot stand their colleagues from the opposite side) which makes 100% for each department and in doing this no state is left out. Please tell me which other University in Nigeria can say same of their institution? I’ll tell U the answer for free “NONE”. As regards the case of one *Goodness Thomas, she would have made it for the MBBS Merit list from her state but unfortunately she was number 7 on the list in terms of jamb score from Niger state* and only the first two were picked as it is in d case with all other 36 states and the FCT, she also wouldn’t have made it for the 2nd & 3rd criteria for admission as the number from the Medical and Dental Board limits ABU MBBS to only 120students per session so please do the maths how would U have admitted Goodness into MBBS and justify it even if U are on the admissions committee? It is also important that I call the attention of the writer of this mischievous piece, that Goodness Thomas was quick to change her 1st choice to ‘Anatomy’ from MBBS seeing she didn’t make the 1st list and she was admitted in the 2nd list of admission which she accepted gladly and quickly, so why are people been mischievous and sharing very wrong information on social media? I have seen the list of about 25 candidates this year alone from Kwara, Benue and Kogi states who scored above 300 and didn’t make the list for MBBS but unfortunately their representatives don’t have social media handles to speak out on their behalf. This year alone ABU received more than 40,000 qualified candidates which is the largest number of applicants for any university in Nigeria and Jamb gave ABU the clearance to take in 11,000 candidates which is also the highest number any university is taking in this year, so who will speak for the over 29,000 qualified candidates? Even ASUU is crying that accademic staff are over stretched due to the number of lecturer to student at the moment. As it stands, ABU is among the 1st generation of universities in Nigeria and there has been plans from the management under the leadership of Prof. Ibrahim Garba with support from the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and the Ministry of Education for ABU Zr to Migrate into a fully pledged Post-Graduate University and that can only happen if the number of undergraduates intake is cut by more than half the number its currently taking in. So please let’s call all mischief makers to order and if anyone has any issue on admission of a candidate to write to the University rather than embarking on campaign of calmuny on social media to dent the reputation of a University we all hold Dear. Abubakar A Rafindadi. So, because of quota system you claimed your School followed, merit and performance should be thrown into the trash bin? you now mean that somebody who scored far below her from another state will be admitted into mbbs why she go study a course she did not bargain for? When will merits and performances be rewarded in this country called nigeria? this is entirely bad and uncalled for because of stupid quota system you claimed to be operating in your school we have just do away with merit. It's high time we come out of all this nonsense quota and catchment of a thing and do the right as a country. this your narratives does not hold water at all. |
