- A Nigerian man who works as a police officer in the U.S, has spoken out about his experience in Nigeria

- Identified as Olu, he recently came for the holidays and revealed that he has been stopped on several occasions by the police in Lagos

- Olu stated that he was profiled as a criminal due to the fact that he wears braids

The level of police brutality against innocent citizens remains a fundamental issue in the country. Several cases of people being arrested due to their looks or the cars they drive, have caused outrage on social media.

A Nigerian man identified as Olu who works as a police officer in Washington DC in the U.S, recently came down to Nigeria for the holiday. However, Olu revealed on Twitter that within his 4 days in Nigeria, he has been profiled as a criminal by the Nigerian police due to the fact that he wears his hair in braids.

He wrote: "4 days in Nigeria & I have already been profiled as a criminal by the Nigeria police force. They profile people based on looks. Male with dreads, braids and so on. I work for the Washington DC as a police officer and I have braids. Enough of the profiling! @TunjiDisu1 @aleeygiwa"

Profiling ke.. More like sick degenerative entities who have pre-emptive and stereotypical expectations and assumptions that if you're clean or not scruffy you're a " thief".

Same stereotypical reasoning permeates into the ordinary citizenry where people come up with all sorts of delusional projections and judge issues/people without careful rationalisations. Needless to give examples, but let me put out a few, you sound intelligent, you're a fraudster just using English to disguise. You dress well as a lady, you're an olosho

U wanton hurried assumptions is now replacing rationalism and critical thinking in the society. Deal with it. Too many in this society are too mentally ill to even know their own conditions and too broke to seek needful help for corrections.

Trust me, over 80% are mentally unstable. If you doubt it, at the close of day observe the frantic lunatic displays in the mad craze displayed... You'll see the sickness in the heart and mind of the society

No mind our archaic police-no intelligence gathering again. The real criminals can play the good boys and pass while they will be harassing innocent citizens.

Even though having that look and that hair on you shouldn't be enough to label you a criminal, in really sane societies (not societies that people think is sane), you shouldn't be having that look.

Like in the societies Imes has influenced.. grin

First that look in and of itself is irresponsible..

Secondly, it is not appropriate for soneone who stands as being part of a force that curbs people's excesses and irresponsible acts in the society to be having that look.

If you are cleanser, then you yourself should look clean.. If you want to rid a society of corruption, then you should be corrupt free.. you may make mistakes sometimes of which no human is free but generally, you should be corrupt free.

If you want to enjoin good and forbid evil, then people who look at you should see positive examples.

if it were to be in the society influenced by Imes, you will not be having that type of hair and be a policeman. I trust my Imes.. . It will never happen!!!

Imes is the end of days, the days when nonsense like this will be accepted without shame and he is the beginning of new days when nonsense like this will be frowned upon grin

Imes, we await your coming grin

Truth be told, In Nigeria, most criminals have certain attributes that make them easily identifiable in the public and these attributes which are usually based on appearance are what Security officers tend to consider when observing people on the road which is not so in US because such way of dressing is completely normal to them. From childhood we are taught that the way you appear to people is the way you will be addressed, If as a guy, you have dreadlocks (which most times look unkempt), tattoos with ear, nose and tongue piercing, No one will ever take you serious and you will always be seen as a suspect for crimes committed around your area because most criminals dress in away that completely singles them out(more like a way that deviates from normal) all because they want to feel high, strong headed and big. This is exactly the same way a lady with tattoos, all forms of unusual body piercing, anklet, contact lens etc will be seen as a runs girl. However, that doesn't mean that any guy on braid and tattoo is a criminal, Some guys just want to appear hard and fierce to people with no criminal mind attached to it. For them it's more of an art or how they want to express themselves or to be identified, nothing more, nothing less

Did you read my comment very well and you reflected upon it?

Did I not say that having that look doesn't justify you as a criminal?

That's what I first said...

It doesn't justify you as a criminal but it gives people negative impression about your morality, therefore someone who should be enjoining good and morals shouldn't have that look... People should look at him and see good examples...

That's my point... What you have said doesn't counter what I've said.. you actually buttressed my first point

I have always wanted to keep dreads and some other hairstyles. I just haven't had the mind cos of the stereotypes attached to the hairstyles in Nigeria. Maybe when I leave, I will try them. The truth is that most Nigerians are judgemental when they see someone rocking that kind of hairstyle. Even myself I am guilty of it. It's just the way I was taught to see things. Sha I am breaking away from that mindset gradually.

I opened a thread on senseless stereotyping of hairstyles in Nigeria a while back and it hit front page!. These stereotypes started with religion I suppose especially Christianity. Our forefathers had dreadlocks and even tattoos. The soldiers are not spared , they too are part of this unnecessary menace! See the link below for the thread on dreadlocks I talked about.

We see on TV doctors, accountants, cops Etc with braided hair and tatoos on their body.

That do not make them criminals.
