Chapter One - The Wall

Nathan

The moment she barged into my office and slammed the door, I knew something was wrong. I could only pray she hadn't found out before I got the chance to tell her myself.

She looked so pale and stressed, I wondered if it was from days of sleepless nights or waking up so early to beat the traffic from Ikeja to Ikoyi. Her beautiful big black eyes now red and swollen, long dark hair dishevelled and wet from the August rain that pelted down since the early mornings. Her once round face and full cheeks now looked so thin. I watched her with trepidation and waited for the shell to drop but nothing came.

She moved to the opposite side of the room and glared at me like a patient who escaped from a mental institution. Scary, confused and lost. She looked so fragile in the baggy sweatpants and Tees she wore. It had to be me who did this to her, the only reason she did not run into my arms for comfort.

I moved the chair I sat on out of the large Mahogany office desk and strode towards her but she took two steps backwards and lifted her palms urging me to stop.

"Don't come any closer. I just need to hear you say it." She finally spoke. Her hand dug into her hair and made it even a bigger mess.

"Eni, why don't you sit and I'll get you something warm." I tried to pacify her.

"I did not come to see you at past seven in the morning to sit and drink tea. I just want to hear it from your mouth Nathan Adakole!" She said.

Nathan Adakole. Danger.

"I -don't know what to say." The only sentence my mush brain could muster.

Her expression that of disbelieve.

"You don't know what to say? Won't you even try to make me understand any of this?" She asked, pointing her phone that had the news of my engagement splashed over its large screen at me. I stared at it like a strange object from space. Just how did the news get out so fast?

"I thought we had something special in spite of our differences" She continued. "After all these time together, did I not mean more than just a piece of rag to be discarded without regard?" She waited for me to speak but continued when I didn't.

"Even if I mean nothing to you, why not tell me to my face! Instead you gave me hope and made me believe it was you and I against the world!" Her voice became loud. I guessed my silence provoked her. Her hands now wiped the tears that spilled, making her face a mess, the sight made my heart shatter. She did not deserve to be hurt, at least not by me and certainly not like this.

"Am I not even worth your respect to be told this news in person? You wait to let me find out like this?" She waved her phone at me and I felt her choke on the last word.

"I tried to bring myself to tell you but this-" I said. Pointing to the both of us.
"This is far more complicated that you can understand. I am left with no other lifeline Enitan. There is no way out of this!"

The words escaped my lips before I had the chance to shut my mouth. My teeth grinded so hard against each other they threatened to crack. This conversation drove me crazy because it made me realize I had lied to her when I called her my 'ride or die', I felt like a liar, a coward, incapable of either riding or dying. How pathetic.

I wanted to offer her something more than all I said, a good reason for my betrayal. She deserved that much but my mouth remained shut while my eyes searched her teary ones for any kind of understanding. How unfair of me, how could I expect her to understand it was me, her trusted lover who picked up the knife and stabbed her right in the Heart. I didn't know where to begin. I was too ashamed to defend myself or comfort her.

So I stood there in silence and watched the tears flow.

"Fine! Don't speak. Ignore my need to make sense of all this.
You don't owe me an explanation anyways, you were never mine in the first place."

You were never mine in the first place

Her words made my heart sink to the pit of my stomach. Because they weren't true, I was hers only, always have.
Always will be

With that she dashed past me and headed towards the door. I wanted to grab her, hold her tight in a hug and tell her this wasn't my wish. I wanted her more than anything else in the world. I loved her so much and was ready to run away together. But all this was beyond me and my need for a woman.

So I stayed. Rooted to the ground until I heard the door close behind me.

'She is gone' I said aloud to myself. Gone. Just like my family and fiancée wanted.

Fiancée

The word made me cringe in disgust. It made me angry. It brought the awful reminder; my wedding was in two months. Two months until my life became miserable, oh was it not already? But it was the price I had to pay for the family name and business. My legs weak and shaken from the thousand emotions coursing through my veins, I walked to my chair and sank in.

The hook of J. Cole's 'Lost ones' pealed of my phone bringing me back from my melancholic thoughts. I glanced at the caller and fell back on my seat when I saw her name.

Annabelle Martins. The She-Devil. I suspected she leaked our engagement story and staged pictures to the tabloids. I did ask her to keep it out of the media or at least wait till I had a few things settled on my end.

Until I had the guts to talk to Enitan about this sham of an engagement

But she didn't listen. Now the blogs and media houses feasted on my ill-luck and indirectly made me lose the only woman I ever truly loved. Annabelle's sick way of revenge and staking her claims in this war. A war I lost the moment Enitan walked out that door. I watched the phone ring again, this time I answered.

" Annabelle. Morning."

"Hey shuga, how was your-"

"Can we do this later?" I cut her of. "My hands are full at the moment." I ended the call before she agitated me further.

My only thoughts were on Enitan and how she left my office bewildered.

I worried about her getting home in one piece, so I called my personal bodyguard, Everest to keep an eye on her from the moment she stepped out of the elevator. But she never did.

CHAPTER TWO - Rock Solid

ENITAN

My eyes opened slightly to paramedics in red or orange jumpsuits hovering above my head The memory of the past minutes a blur, I could only remember the fight with Nathan, getting into an elevator and pressing the panic button. I laid confused and in pains as I watched two people reach for different tools in the cramped space.

One in particular flipped my eyelids and pointed a flashlight to my eyes, the one looked young and female. She reached for my wrist to check my pulse then her hands moved to my shoulders and lifted a blanket that now replaced the grey Lacoste T-shirt I wore earlier -a Christmas present from Nathan. It was difficult to find a dress in my closet that wasn't a present from him so almost everyday I wore something that resounded his lavishness on me.

She attached some wires to my chest, checked the reading on a machine next to her. Then she asked something and made a few hand gestures that my mind could not process because I had just one thing in mind.

Him. Was he here, did he come for me?

Weak and disoriented, I struggled to look for him past the huge oxygen mask and neck brace that covered my face. Maybe if I saw his face I would gain the strength to survive.

Instead I caught the flinty face of his trusted guard and side kick few feet away, the one with the name of a mountain. His gaze was fixated on me like one coerced into an impossible task.

Disappointment and hurt rocked my broken heart all over again. I was mad at Nathan and harboured the urge to rip off his head, but a part of me still wanted -needed him by my side.

One week we lazied around in 'Tinapa resorts' and the next, he didn't give two hoots if I died or survived an accident that happened because of him. The week we spent together felt like a decade ago, so many things had changed in a short time.

Strapped to a stretcher in an ambulance, my life flashed before my eyes and I began to reflect on the series of events that led up to that point. I remember how my life changed from a single phone call.

Hello to all readers of TWBU. It's been a while, the past days have been crappy for me hence the late update. I just updated the first part of chapter two and it's in Enitan's point of view. Yesss I forgot to mention this story will be written from the POV of Enitan and Nathan, so any name you see at the top of a chapter means it's the person's POV. 2nd part coming right up. Enjoy.

Chpt. Two contd.

"Nita what the hell! You scared me to death! I've been calling you all day! Where in God's name are you?" I flinched at my best friend's tone while I took the phone away to save my ear from her screeching voice.

I heard her ramble on the other end and wondered what triggered her, until I tapped the missed call tab and saw the forty-seven calls she left. I looked at the time on my phone and realized I had slept for eight hours.

I brought the phone to my ear and tried to calm her nerves.
"Hello to you too firecracker" The fond name I called Tanya whenever her flames burned.
"Why so vexed bunny, what's the matter with you?" I gave a soft chuckle.

"I should be asking you that."

"Uuuh it's three in the morning and you're blowing up my phone. Why aren't you even asleep?"

"Because I was worried about you, you retarded dimwit!"

'Retarded dimwit' sounded like Tanya, she didn't mind redundancies so long as she made her point.
Truly she sounded worried and it broke my resolve to drop the call in ten seconds.

"Bunny I'm sorry I did not pick up ok. The mill was a madhouse today, there was an accident involving Marcel so I covered for him. I came back gassed out, and had to leave my phone on vibe to avoid people interrupting my sleep."

"Will he be alright?"

"Well no body parts lost, he'll live."

"Ok. When I couldn't reach you I came to your house and knocked for a while. I thought you did something to yourself"

"Why? what do you mean by 'do something to myself' bunny".

She paused for a while then continued "Oh baby, you really have no clue?"

"Clue of what, Mtss bunny! Are you drunk right now?" Tanya had a bad habit of calling to say random things whenever she had an extra glass of wine.

"No." Her serious reply made me uneasy.

"Just listen to me Nita, after this call, put your phone away, do not touch it. Just trust me, I'll be on my way to you."

Gripped by fear I asked her, "Did something happen to my family?"

"It's not them, it's Nathan. Look don't panic, he's fine alright, it's just something else trust me."

"Ok". My answer a little too calm for the dreadful feeling that engulfed me.

An hour later she came and I cried my eyes out after she showed me the pictures. Social media buzzed with the news and I had no idea because I had been asleep. CEO and son to Avalon's Group Chairman, Nathan Adakole engaged to Annabelle Sima Martins, daughter of the Chairman of the National Anti-graft Agency . They headlines read 'chair wedding' and all sorts of names.

The next few days became horrible, I tried to reach him without luck. I wanted to believe it was some kind of joke, but deep in my heart I knew. I was the joke. I knew people like him didn't end up with people like me.

He a billionaire and the future of his family's multi-national empire and I, a common college graduate who worked in a small tech firm as a web developer and took extra shifts in a flour mill just to support my down-and-out family. Our worlds were light years apart and I was just too stupid to have been carried away by the attention he showered me. Too carried away to remember luck didn't strike twice.

Confronting him after I'd learnt of his engagement and return to the country turned out to be a huge mistake. He gave no explanation, not even a mediocre apology. I ran, and he didn't chase after me. It felt like the old Nathan I knew was back. Cold, arrogant and unreachable.

Surrounded by strangers in an ambulance that sped across the streets of Lagos, I became unsure which part of me hurt more and needed urgent care, my half-alive body that had survived a crash or my shattered heart.

"We're almost there. Stay with me. Stay with me ok?" The last words I heard from the paramedic before I felt myself drifting into emptiness again.

Chapter Three - Too High

"The heart dies a slow death, shedding each hope like leaves until one day there are none. No hopes. Nothing remains."
- Chiyo Sakamoto

NATHAN

The Secretary, Ms. Maria Ahmed breezed into my office to remind me of the meeting with the chief officers at nine. The meeting so important even the chairman showed up, however my body refused to function. The situation perplexed me. Over an hour since she confronted me and stormed out, yet no word from Everest.

"Are you fine Mr Nath?" I forgot she still waited for my reply.

"Yes Ms. Maria, I'm fine. I'll make it in ten." I shooed her away with my hand.

"Ok. Because we don't want to infuriate the Big Dog on such a fine Tuesday morning."

"You seem not to want this job anymore Ms. Maria. Found a new one?" I kept a straight face.

She looked horrified. "No sir, why?"

"You're going to get yourself fired if he ever hears you call him that."
I fought the small smile that formed on my lips when I saw her expression. But she recovered fast.

"He should hear what you call him then." She said with a smirk.

I called him 'The Devil'. It sounded a bit exaggerated but others called him more dramatic names. The names all boiled down to one thing. My father, Williams Agaba Adakole was not a man you could mess with. He intimidated many and commanded fear and respect from staff and business partners alike. He exuded the aura of dread, only his grandchildren found him soft and adorable.

"Smart. You win again. Let's keep that our little secret." I said while I stood up.

I picked up my phone and Macbook, and made a mental note to call Everest on my way to the boardroom.

"But are you really fine sir?" I perceived the incident with Enitan earlier the reason of her concern.

I felt the urge to talk to her but I contemplated my answer. She dedicated almost half of her life to Avalon Group and overtime became family, but even though loyal to my family for nineteen years, the topic of my marriage proved too sensitive and she remained just a secretary. So I kept it in.

"Yes. And please confirm all details of my trip on Thursday and forward to Rose, can't have her slipping up again." With that I headed for the door and she followed behind.

"Yes sir!"

"Thank you Ms. Maria." I stepped out then made the call.

"Nothing? Could you have missed her on her way out?" I asked. Confused about his feedback on Enitan's whereabouts.

"Not at all sir. The CSO finished his brief shortly after your first call, I made my way to the lobby seconds later.
E-dispatch could have sent her to an elevator already on a trip down, making her wait." Everest's baritone voice reverberated over the phone.

"For over an hour?"

"It's also possible she decided to take the stairs. I have eyes on both."

The idea of her walking sixteen flights of stairs sounded absurd and unlike her. It took a hell of convincing to even get her to the gym, she hated long walks and anything close.

"That's impossible. If she's still in the building, I want to know where."

Guilt plagued me. I ended things with her in the most uncivil manner and didn't deserve to know whether she cried in some corner or walked down the entire building.

But I cared. Everything about her mattered to me and it made me act overdramatic.

"Call Mac and ask him to pull up anything from the cameras."
I used my fingers to soothe the area of my temple that ached. I felt unsettled, she left my office distraught and I worried about her impulsiveness.

"That is going to take some time sir."

"Make it faster. I have a meeting in five minutes, text me when you find her."

"Will do. What is the instruction after that?"

"Take her home and keep an eye from afar till we speak."

"But sir, my orders are to..."

"You orders just changed! Just do as I ask you to damn it!"

I admired his persistence to track me like a hound but while I had the rest of his team to work my security details, I could only trust her in his hands.

I released a deep breath.
"Please." I said in a weak tone.

Only her made me care this much and she didn't even know it.

"Yes sir." He said before I hung up.

I reached the boardroom and through the wide bulletproof glass door, I saw my father's tall bulky and grim figure already seated with other executives. I walked in and acknowledged them with a nod before I took my seat. The meeting commenced and after all formalities, I gave my report. The situation looked bad.

In one year Avalon Group had taken series of blows and they started to show. With Avalon constructions under investigation for links to the former governor indicted for laundering funds through the company and the involvement of Avalon oil in an illegal Oil block deal, my father risked prison and loosing his position to his insane brother, Thomas. This and rumoured seizure of recently acquired properties caused stocks in the flourmill and steel subsidiaries to crash. Strong allies looked like our only chance of survival against the onslaught of investigations, court cases and worst, convictions.

I sat down and glanced at my phone, four missed calls from Everest. Eager to call him back, I half-listened to what the chief risk officer said. Something about the shareholders who owned just twenty percent of the company's stocks panicking and making the board of directors convene without the chairman.

Few minutes later I spotted our Chief security officer, Major Slaven outside. He walked up to Hakim, my father's guard at the door and exchanged a few words. He strode in and whispered a few things to my father then stood straight to address us.

"Good day gentlemen." He drawled in his Serbian accent.
"There's been an accident with one of the elevators. Got stuck between floors for a while and crashed two floors down. Fortunately, only one casualty recorded."

My heart stopped.

Chapter three contd.

"Tech are trying to ascertain the cause, until then all seven elevators except the executive elevator are shutdown and sealed."

No.

I managed to find my voice.
"The casualty... Do you know who?"
My father who looked unfazed since the Major walked in sent me a glare, his only reaction since the news.

"We have not been able to identify her, but it's obvious she's not a staff."

My body froze. All parts of me went numb.

"She's alive but unconscious. A few injuries but could have taken hits to the head and other parts. Emergency services are attending to her as I speak."

It's her.
No it's not.

The only thing my mind played on a loop. Hundreds of visitors trooped into the building everyday, maybe one of them got unlucky.

"In the mean time access card control in elevator E1 has been deactivated to enable the staff get to their floors faster, so it's going to be a packed trip. But we can get the chopper here before your meeting ends to avoid the hassle."

But that explained why Everest never saw her alight.
And the missed calls.

Like one struck by bolts of electricity, I picked my phone and charged towards the door leaving my father and the others stunned. I saw the lights of the silent alarm blinking but everyone looked calm, I guessed security got to them in time.

I dialled his number in a heartbeat.
"Please tell me you got her and she's alright." I paced the hall and waited for his voice to come up over the loud sirens blaring in the background.

"I'm sorry but one of the elevators malfunctioned and.."

"God! No no. No!". I screamed over the phone and stumped my foot hard against the floor.
She came because of me. Because I refused to talk to her first. It was all my fault.

I trashed my arms and grabbed the rear of my head with both palms out of reflex. I wasted no time to hear the rest of his update before I darted to elevator E1 and pressed the darn thing non-stop until my fingers became sore, but the indicator only showed the cab many floors below me.
My legs carried me towards the staircase, my only instinct to get to the ground floor.

But then strong hands tugged me. I turned to see Hakim's towering figure and firm grip on my arms while my father strolled down the hall with anger etched on his face.

"You disappoint me boy." He shook his head in disapproval.

"This is not the time nor place for this Dad. I need to get to her!" My chest heaved with emotions only God understood.

He pointed in the direction of the boardroom.
"You will put yourself together, walk back into that meeting and apologise for being irresponsible."

"I'm sorry but I need to go now!"

"The only place you will go is back in that room to discuss the future of this company! Your future."

"She's hurt because of me." I whimpered.

"Just take a look at yourself you pathetic child! Twenty eight years of being raised and trained by your mother and I, four of those spent working in this company, and you still don't have your priorities set straight. This company is falling apart piece by piece and all you are concerned about is some nameless lowlife from the suburbs of Lagos? What do I have to do to pass a resounding message!"

"Do not speak of her in such a manner!" My voice raised and a few people noticed the commotion but none dared to stare.

"Do not abuse the privilege of being my son. You are still an employee and I expect nothing but concession and discipline from you!"

I pulled away from his minion and hobbled down. Halfway down the stairs, his voice brought me to a halt.

"One more step. Just one more and you loose everything! My name. Your position as the CEO of this group and every fighting chance of becoming future Chairman of the board."

"No. You won't do that." I said. Weak, my knees turned to jelly.

"Then go ahead." He said, signalling to the stairs.

I didn't have to. I knew the outcome already. He would rip off my dreams and inheritance from under my feet without a second thought. After all the only reason I became his business favourite was because he did the same to my older brother.

I slumped to the ground defeated. Clutching my head, I leaned on the wall for support while I looked at him for any kind of pity.

"Good. The company will take care of the hospital bill and compensate her. But that is all the connection there will be between her and this family. No more. You will forget her sorry ass and get married to Annabelle Martins. The next time the both of you so much as step foot in the same building, it will be worse than a faulty elevator. I'll raze down the entire building if I have to."

Oh no, I hoped my ears heard wrong.
"Dad, What the hell are you saying?" My voice wavered. I feared the worst.

He stared down at me with a knowing look on his face.
"Stay away from the girl and she will be fine." With that he gestured to Hakim and turned towards the hall.

"What have you done! Did you try to kill her?" My voice echoed in the stairwell.

"Tried?" He scoffed.
"I never fail at anything yet she is alive. This, my boy. Is just a warning." He adjusted his glasses and made for the boardroom.

I pulled out my phone and called Everest.

"Please. Do not leave her side. Watch over her until I find a way to her."

I dropped the phone and sobbed bitterly.
The pang in my chest unbearable, I fixed myself up and climbed back. Just like a lost dog, I walked down the hall and back into the meeting.
