While I sympathize with your viewpoint of a country that's standing on its heads with selfish and confused leadership; I disagree that only in disintegration lies economic development. Here is why; Would a Biafra republic suddenly mean you will no longer be led by your current political class and elites? What have they to show for the last 20 years of democratic rule? Are your current and past state governors not your kinsmen? What are their efforts towards a regional economic block? What are their efforts towards harnessing the technological know how of the people of the region? Granted there will be more money for the political elites of your region to share if they had a country of their own with 100% resources control, but my experience is that the increased economic power would only lead to increase in taste for even more ostentatious luxury! If you can't manage a household budget, then you can't manage a company's budget! And if you can't manage a state budget; you are definitely not going to be able to manage a federal budget! This is not development. Development involves building and improving on existing technologies to solve problems creatively; not badly copying some high school project and claiming 'invention'. This is what is driving Africa backwards, we want the recognition, but never have the drive or the patience to do the work. That is why I do not celebrate this attitude.

This is probably a poly or uni project, which is sad, because a supervisor giving marks to a graduate for badly copying an existing machine is not the right way to inspire research.

Help me ask graduates from Nigerian institutions of higher learning; how many of them never faked data or otherwise cut corners during their final year projects? It is this kind of lazy approach to research that creates the backwardness.

A just graduated student of  Chemical Engineering Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Anthony Obikwelu, has stunned the science world after he developed and manufactured a machine that can convert plastic and other waste materials into fuel.

Below is the detailed inscription on what the machine is all about. He writes,

Left to me, every student in secondary school must be made to do the following subjects irrespective of their choice of vocation.

The Unizik student Fabricated a Pyrolysis Unit. It was his own design. He may even have one or two innovations embedded in the machine BUT it wasn't an invention.

his work to have stunned the science world.

The write-up show that the science reporter has no idea of science: a prerequisite to writing quality scientific report to properly educate the populace.

3. Like many pyrolytic processes, what would be produced is fuel oil and likely not diesel/gasoline. Fuel oil would still need to undergo blending, catalytic cracking and/or reforming to meet diesel or gasoline specification.

4. I wonder how the guy handled the olefinic gases and carcinogenic aromatics that will likely be produced.

5. There will be coke deposits. How will he remove them? How did he even size the reactor?

5. Is the process sustainable and economic? The problem with things like this is the high cost of pre-treating the plastics, downstream processing, octane/centane improvement and treatment of emissions like Noxs.

6. A distinction between the type of plastics used should be made. Were thermosets or thermoplasts used?

- It is embarrassing that the supervisor in his school adopted this project. It is only a reflection of the backwardness and decadence of our educational institutions. The only impressive engineering project I have seen so far is the guy that made a small flying aeroplane.

- It is not the guy's fault though. He is only as good as his lectures.

- No sane governement will adopt this. Trust me when I say this.
