You did nothing wrong in paying her a compliment. But perhaps she isn't used to receiving compliments.

I know there are some women I compliment even in my office and instead of saying a simple "thank you" what you get is a frown and a rude "meaning what" response. For those ones I simply apologise and know never to compliment them again in the future.

Your madam may be dealing with certain insecurities about her looks. If she kicks up a fuss when she returns, stay calm and tell her you meant no disrespect. Then go ahead and apologise and keep it strictly business going forward.

By the way, do not say anything unless she confronts you directly so you don't end up putting the snitchy househelp in trouble.
