Oregbe17:What is the proportion of civil servants that go on tours? In many ministries, the junior workers do not go anywhere. And even among the senior workers, only a few are allowed to go on tours, each year. Some people only go once in 3 years. Even for the tours how much is approved for them? And how much do they spend? Or will they not eat, transport themselves, pay their hotel bills while on tour? How much is now left? Can they build a house from what is remaining? |

Tayeni:I had to respond to you because I had a personal experience of what the OP wrote there. And in my case the business was milked for the boss children to school abroad while I was owed for 11months. I was struggling to pay for my child in nursery school. Most bosses who have another source will find a way to loan from the viable to support the struggling business. Just know that some people don't have conscience. |

@sassysure You are so right. Wasn't an easy decision for me at that point. Had projects to run and management kept making promises to pay. I focused on successful completion without knowing i was being played. It was all in the past now but I was a big fool sincerely. |

Nigeria/Nigerians need to change the way they think. There is no way things will improve if business owners don't pay workers enough to consume and on time. This is something successive governments have failed to enforce. This brings us back to the issue of Nigeria's structure. States or councils should have more say on issues like wage payments. Pressure groups like MAN, NLC, TUC, NACCIMA, NESG etc should be decentralized. States should be created along ethnic lines or at least power should be devolved to mainly local government areas and they should be strictly created with ethnicity in mind. We can't keep on ignoring Nigeria's fundamental problems. |

Why are they acting all surprised? It is sickening. Go to every sector from discos to police to hospital where Nigerians command some level of authority and All of them are same evil monsters who pray to God every Friday as Muslims and Sunday as Christians. |

mymoney001:Well Written Article. So Apt. In this part of the world, the employer-employee relationship is more or less like a master-slave relationship. Most of these Nigerian employers have a tyrannical mindset, they will offer you peanut and expect you to worship them and work your ass off like a slave. Graduates need to brace themselves and start rejecting ridiculous job offer no matter how desperate they are. If 70% of Job seekers can do this, the employers will be forced have a rethink and review their payment structure. I will like to draw an admonition from this location, that every undergraduate, whatever your course of study, should learn a skill that will you self sufficient upon graduation. |

Esseite:But during that time, they still buy new cars, travel abroad while the owe. I can't stand such people..I worked for one. He would delay salaries and now pay half. Meanwhile his children were in British International School and he was staying in banana island. The worst part is that he would delay staff till late. People that were going from ikoyi to abuse agba, Berger, festac, etc. While him, he enters his car and 5 mins he's home. I didn't let him do that to me. He expected me to come to work on a public holiday but I told him I could not. When I didn't see my salary on the last day of the month, I sent him a text that I had not got my salary yet. He paid in full. Other staff thought I used jazz...lol. I didn't stay up to 2 months there. |

africandollar:You that started your own business, don't you have people working for you? If all of them go and start their business, how will yours run? If everyone is an entrepreneur, who will be the employee in that organisation? You guys should think. Not everyone will start a business. There are some employees that are richer than you people forming entrepreneur that only make occasional money. Entrepreneurs that are still going to beg employees of companies to help boost their business. You better acknowledge employees because they help some of you guys. The ones that come here to appeal to us to use them as vendors. Why don't they go to their fellow entrepreneurs?? |

nelson7777:They decided to take that risk because they cannot work for someone. They have to be prepared for the challenges too. No one is compelled to start a business, especially one that involves paying salaries. Besides, some people start up business prematurely when they should be getting experience, networking and funds. They think it is easy to just set up office and start earning. If they wait longer, they would gain some expe and education on how it works. But you see a graduate start a business fresh out of school with learning under someone and gaining the needed experience. |

harbarzzy:Ahhhh...you know them. I worked for one.. Chai! I don work for this my life. Husband and wife were pastors. The husband was the MD and the wife had a ceremonial position. She used to come and go anytime she wanted. We never got along because she tried to micromanage me. It was obvious they used to discuss me at home from the way they spoke. They could delay salaries whilee they are out of the country celebrating anniversary. They could blackmail staff with the there's no job out there mantra. They would even bring external facilitators to talk to talk about growing in a place. That it might not be rosy but it will pay off later. I left after three months because I couldn't deal with that kind of local stress. Staff had stayed there for long. When I left, it seems their eyes were opened because others that had stayed for years that thought they could not find another job, began to leave. I |

ultron12345:I can so relate to this. Way back in 2005 I started a food packaging business. I promised all my employees that they would always receive 13th month salary. They also went home every month with products that the packaging had been damaged or returned by customers. Between 2005 - 2008 they received tje 13th month. I thought they were loyal, not knowing they had become a cartel to milk me dry. In 2008 I had to take a loan to finance the business still. Not know they were stealing. They got so comfortable stealing that people later said they were using "juju" on me. A lot of other people saw them stealing and ruining my business but you know Nigerians, nobody said anything. By 2009 I couldn't repay the loan so I lost my collateral. By the end of 2009, when I couldn't pay the 13th month, every single one of them left. I used all my gratuity from working with an oil company to set up this business. They just came to ruin me and left. On the flip side, I have a friend that wouldn't pay her staff for months, her children school abroad. Yet her staff stay for years, they dare not steal from her. Honestly, Nigerians are the cause of their own woes. Businesses pack up daily because Nigerians care so little about each other. They don't seem to realise it affects every part of their lives, their children's lives and future. We are tearing this country apart through nonchalance and greed. I don't know a more disloyal citizenry than Nigerians. It is all quite unfortunate because together we could make a phenomenal nation. |

bunto:Hmn. Very deep testimony from you. Dishonesty and Greed is very rampant among Employers and Employees in Nigeria. You employ someone and that person wants to buy a Jeep through your business at the end of the year. You can be a good and generous employer but very calculative and firm at the same time. You need to commit your business into the hands of God and scrutinize daily operations carefully. Don't waste time in sacking any dubious, lazy or unproductive worker. Do spot checks with your customers to actually know how your employees act when they go out to supply goods to them. Don't be careless and too trusting. At the end of the day, it is your Company and you are responsible to make it succeed. Cheers. |

Bigval5:It Doesn't really matter how you treat people, a lot of people have very selfish interest and won't do anything to help the business grow. Here is a case study, A business was set up newly with new staffs, they started training and trained for 3 weeks. After which business started properly and salary was paid on the 27th of same month. Even the days of training were paid for. But Guess what? 2 persons stopped working after taking salary for days they didn't show up for which are 28,29,30 n 31. What can you say to this?? |

ultron12345:you have said it all. God bless you abundantly. Especially that government aspect. Starting from our government schools, the way government agencies look and are manager, the way government workers behave, it's terrible. It portrays our nation. I have a friend who stays abroad and wants to invest in naija about fear no gree am. An average Nigerian is a thief. My ex and his friends believe if they have any opportunity to steal money they will steal and they feel it's in the dna of Nigerians to steal cos they are thieves. I cannot work in a one man business though, it's not structured well. Worked there before and I didn't like the set up. But salaries should be paid in due time though cos without money one can't function. As for the peanuts, it's what one can afford one can pay, but some employers under pay even when they can afford more, some purposely owe while u see them flying around d world and driving luxurious cars. |

Goterry0123:Thank you. I was talking to a friend about the challanges he was facing with his staff. Half of his new employees dissapear after recieving their first salary. It was then he was adviced by a lawyer to pay mid month of the following month. Understand that if you are being paid mid month every month, then your salary is to all intents and purposes regular and you are not being owed. |
