Professor Yemi Osibanjo has no Ph.d. He was once head of department , Commissioner of Justice and supervised pH.d Students. Wole Soyinka is a Prof and serves as Emeritus professor in many Universities across the globe. SOYINKA doesn't have a Masters degree. Same as Chinua Achebe.

Professorship is not an academic degree. It is a titled conferred based on a scholar's contribution to his academic field. It doesn't necessarily follow the sequence of B.sc , M.sc and pH.d.

If a department of Social Media Studies is created in Havard today and Mark Zuckerberg lectures there for just two years. He would be made professor in the department whether he has M.sc or not.

Professorship is not a degree, and so doesn't necessarily have to conferred after obtaining a PhD. It's usually based on one's research track record. The only reason why it usually comes after a PhD today is that, researchers generally are only able to conduct original, independent research, publication-worthy only after their PhD. Now if you argue that she doesn't deserve the professorship title because her research/ publication record is poor, as is true for a lot of professors in Nigeria, I will take it. I hope you get your facts right next time.

This is the story of Sidi Osho. I am not exactly sure now whether to address her as a professor or as a doctor. After all she was called professor and vice chancellor at Afe Babalola University in Ado Ekiti between 2009 and 2014, after which she was demoted to a senior lecturer at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ado Iwoye and dismissed for financial impropriety in 2016. She is definitely a woman with many twists in her story. Another twist, after her dismissal Ogun State governor would later appoint her as a commissioner in his cabinet.

What exactly is going on in our academic institutions? This is definitely not the first time that private universities would arbitrarily hand out the professorial cadre to undeserving individuals. ABUAD took this trend to another level by promoting several lecturers who have no PhD degrees or any substantial academic publications to the professorial office. I will do a comprehensive report of the list of professors in private universities in Nigeria without a PhD degree, including vice chancellors (e.g. ABUAD) who without a PhD degree have been awarded professorial cadres. I believe it is a big shame that the Nigerian University Commission has decidedly turned a blind eyes on quality assurance in our educational institutions, especially with respect to private universities where just anything goes.

The highest level in an academic environment is the doctorate degree level. Yes, schools can make someone a professor and another school won't recognize him or her as a professor and this is normal. For instance, in my undergraduate years a lecture was a professor in India and when he came to my school, he wasn't recognized like one. People pay attention on how you get your BSc., MSc., PhD., and not professorship and this is due to the fact that the VC of a University can decide to make you without violating any rules and he may decides not to make you one even if you're the brilliant in that same university. Why do focuse much on Professorship? In India, becoming a professor is really easy, A teacher or faculty member at a college or university regardless of formal rank is a professor in the US.

This is a clear distortion of facts aimed at tarnishing the image of private institutions. The placing of academicians on higher levels is a normal trend in Nigeria irrespective of category of the university (whether private, state or federal). When the new federal universities were opened, there was mass exodus of lecturers from existing universities because they offered them higher positions than their then employers. I know of another lecturer that was offered a professorial position in one of the 2nd generation federal universities (an old one at that) even though he was a senior lecturer at the time because the school needed someone in that field. So this is not peculiar to private universities. Regarding the issue of demotion, it is still not uncommon or peculiar to private or state universities. I authoritatively know of a professor who moved from one federal university to another and agreed to be demoted to a lower level because preferred the new school and felt he had more prospects there than his former school.
