My cousins told me mermaids had been spotted at the village stream (iyi) numerous times, and the elders had decided people should stop going to the stream. They were literally shaking. On December 24th we were supposed to go watch football. After I waited for them in front of our compound, I thought perhaps they had gone to the stream. I began walking there. As I approached I heard the sound of voices, like people jumping in the water and shouting for joy. I said to myself, "See these boys oh. So na here dem come to enjoy with their babes."

When I emerged on the water, my head began to swell. I mean literally. I saw a woman with reddish skin lying on her back on the bank, her legs raised. A good looking man with a band of cowries around his wrist was on top of her moving his hips powerfully between her thighs. They saw me. Stopped. They looked at me. I just stood there as if a giant hand pressed me to the spot.

Then they slipped quietly into the water, and submerged themselves, completely disappeared. I'm not ashamed to say I ran from that place screaming like a girl.

Some people have suggested I go for cleansing. But apart from some nightmares, I feel okay.

But damn! It's the most bizarre experience of my life!!!!!!
