There is one thing God wants to give them, it's called RELATIVE FREEDOM

They needed to study thoroughly their bodies, home and environment. That's why God didn't give them ABSOLUTE FREEDOM.

For the main time, they need to remain submissive to their life giver so as not to get into trouble which could eventually lead to their death.

That's why the tree is called "knowledge of good and evil".

What the book is telling us is that the man and his wife chose to rebel against their life giver to gain ABSOLUTE FREEDOM, then God told them what will be the consequences of their rebellion.

First they'll eventually die since they don't know what could harm them in all the things around them, secondly they'll treat each other badly since they're now prepared to do things their own way, thirdly they'll find it difficult to eat because their life giver who is supporting them with natural manure is turning his back on them and lastly their children will continue to suffer more intense hardship since there is no way for them to gain accurate knowledge of their bodies, home and environment!

For them not to start constituting nuisance and continue making a mess of everything God had made, he quickly sent angels to stop them from getting to the tree of life. This tree has to potentials to preserve them alive even if they eat any poisonous substance or misusing their bodies in anyway that could harm them!

So it's simply means they're not yet ripe for the type of FREEDOM they demanded for.

For the main time after having passing the test, then ABSOLUTE FREEDOM would have been put forward on to the table.

The tree was their first teacher, and it was the hardest kind of all teachers. It was the mother of all teachers, gave them the test first and the lesson they had and learned afterwards eating of its fruit.

Just like the figure of speech, "Ladies and Gentlemen" is a merism, so is the phrase "knowledge of good and evil" a merism, and so the reason why the tree is called TKGE is because it is supplies the conduit through which a whole gamut of worldly and all types/shades of human experiences flows out, lol.

A&E jumped the gun. A&E were ahead of themselves.

In the original Hebrew text, where and/or when God said, "... thou shall surely die", the "surely die" comment, has the meaning, translated as "slow death", lol, and the meaning, conveys, a sense and reality of gradually ceasing to be, lol. It is, as it were, merely stating emphatically and/or publicly, to A&E, that, the moment after eating, they will have a gradual fading away and/or die away existence, lol.

Now, true to God's words, the thing He particularly warned Adam about, happened, when A&E ate the fruit, though its spiritual death, first instantly that happened. Oh, for the benefit of any that cares, spiritual death, simply means, the departure of man’s spirit from his body, leading to a separation of man and God (i.e. man no longer having "unmetered" contact with God). I digress, back on track, true to God's promise, man did die. Man died spiritually death first and physical death, is the end of the "slow death" Adam was told of. After A&E's spiritual death, the process of decline and deterioration kicked in. Everything, over time, will begin going down and/or looking south. At the end of the decline, deterioration, body organ failings, aging etcetera, lol comes and so, we have, an awaiting physical death.

Yep, it surely, as God warned and guaranteed, from spiritual death to physical death, is a slow death, indeed for man, lol. It was a slow, 930 years long, before Adam died, lol. The slow tick, tock, tick, tock, mortality clock came alive and started to tick tock tick tock from after the lunge at the fruit and subsequent eating of it. Thou shalt surely die, essentially is what man truly is doing, and putting into good practice. Man, the second he is born, is dying. Is having a slow death, just as warned and/or promised by God that it will certainly happen, lol
