Non invited me for interview, I had to dive in into IT,
I started with HTML5, CSS3 and javascript with low background knowledge of computer, I never knew I was doing myself good. Less I forget, it took me only 5 months to mastered all.

I neither have a tutor nor coach, it was self taught.
By God's grace I was able to convinced the panel, how safety related issues could be tackled in the organization using my risk assessment sheet that is yet to be developed..

I am a chronic stammerer, but I still got the APL.

Now, IT is a very large field. Good old programming is still the heart of it. I recently introduced two female friends to programming.
One now does data analytics with Python, and the other just started web development. None of them studied Computer Science in school.

So, let's start:

1. Programming: This is quite easy, honestly. Most people find it difficult because they read or watch difficult tutorials. Learn a language and start building little projects. You don't need to learn all the programming languages in the world. Only learn the one you need for any particular job.

a.) Node.js: You can start with this. It is open-source (meaning it is not proprietary and it is free) and it is in demand. There are materials everywhere to learn this. My best however is a tutorial from Angela Yu. She's funny and her tutorial will teach you from an absolute beginner to a web developer.
You will learn frontend technologies like HTML, CSS, BootStrap, JavaScript to backend tech like Node.js, REST API, SQL and NoSQL. Don't fear, they are all simple especially when you watch her videos.

c.) Python: This is a very easy and very versatile language. It can be used for web development, data analytics, and even AI and Machine Learning. Its downside is just the speed when compared to C# for example. It's also very much in demand.

Now, we have cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform. For a beginner, you might just check for some tutorials on Youtube to help you start. You can even get a free 30-day subscription on Azure to test and learn with.
After that, you can apply for jobs as a Cloud engineer or a support engineer. One of the few companies that employ a lot of support engineers in Nigeria is Tek Experts: https://www.tek-experts.com/en-us/tek-experts-nigeria-jobs-in-lagos

The good thing about Tek-Experts is that they take you irrespective of your background and experience as long as you can pass their test and interviews. You will LEARN A LOT, especially about Microsoft technologies. They will expose you to the world of IT. The downside, however, is the pay. The pay is meagre but as a beginner, you can't really complain. Just gain experience and move on.

When you learn any programming skill, you can then start applying for internships. Promotion in the IT world is largely dependent on how good you are. It can be very fast honestly. You can also apply for some Junior Developer roles.

Some remote companies also employ junior devs.

So, on the 14th February aka Valentine's day (love day), NNPC decided to breakhearts.

So, I had already been invited to a date by my Fiance on that day. oh, I didn't know and was not informed that our boy was planning an engagement party. That he had already invited my friends.

So, sometime around 4:30pm on Val's day, NNPC's success mails started dropping. Our girl was glued to her laptop in the office viewing Nairaland and refreshing mails. saying silent prayers to God and trying her best to hold her tears in order not to draw attention.

Don't let your emotions cloud your judgement. This thread isn't a pity party. The purpose of the thread is to get info about NNPC and what working there is like. I feel for those that didn't get in. Heck, I have friends that didn't get in but it is not the end of the world. We all have our stories.
I wrote here some time ago that I almost got a remote job that was gonna pay me $30k to $40k per year. That's over 1m every month, way above what NNPC would dream of paying GTs. Plus, I would actually learn a lot and grow too. I was very sad. In fact, it was one of the saddest days ever. All my plans vanished just like that but that experience taught me a lot.

My advice is this:

1. Get IT skill. It's one of the cheapest and easiest skills to learn. You can learn ANY IT skill that will get you a decent job online for free.

2. After getting this skill, apply to jobs abroad too. Honestly, I barely apply for Naija jobs. There are tons of jobs abroad. Now, I have two job offers, one in Naija and the other abroad. I am still deciding which to choose based on a number of things. My friend just got one in Norway.

3. Rejections are part of the process. Accept it. Don't let it weigh you down.

4. Apply for a lot of jobs. Don't always bank on any job. If it comes, fine. If it doesn't, we move.

5. Always try and leave an impression at an interview. Let the interviewers feel you actually have some value to add. When you want to interview with a company, research on its shortcomings, research on its failures and see what you can do to help. Nobody will reject a valuable candidate. When I did the NNPC interview, I knew I had done well. The interviewer practically said, "we need people like you". I knew I had passed but I could never be so sure I would get the job because I thought they would play politics or something.

PS: The IT skill I advised is because IT is the field that can easily get you jobs abroad. And there are jobs in abundance so if you're good, you will get one. IT is growing every day so it can't be saturated.

Its so unfortunate that in naija that due to the underdevelopment of so many industries and the man-know-man mentality people who sweat reading courses like human kinetics, polymer and textile engineering etc will end up in a bank or having to start business because the industries where they wouldav put whatever they garnered in school is virtually non existent.

Make i yearn more as i gat free time on my hands for now . Take for example someone who reads Food science, microbiology,animal science, soil science etc and finishes with a 2:1 and then goes on for his NYSC in kano. If u wanna package urself internationally for masters scholarship application, it starts from NYSC. Dont go joining groups for CDS like road safety etc which are 'useless' (u are allowed to use this word here only ) ; instead look out for UNICEF, HIV/AIDS, anti Women trafficking, MDG'S (renowned world bodies) and make sure u take it serious and follow it bumper to bumper and at the end of ur NYSC, have an official of one of these NGO's write a strong letter of recommendation for you saying u undertook voluntary work (u can sweeten it by saying u chose to give back to the society bla bla bla) and then with your 1 year experience/service in a college (instead of saying you taught biology, you can put 'a college lab scientist') -- This is packaging..... ... (Packaging is important,,its why most of us will pay to watch Thor in cinemas while we have our own Sango and amadioha rotting away with low patronage )
along with ur TOEFL which you should write while doing your NYSC as this is the best time to write it when u v time and FG money in ur hands, u r good to go to apply for the following below..they r all called erasmus mundus masters courses..there r so many more but this s what i could dig up

With expensive phnes most of y'all carry around, try and utilize it optimally by googling and doing research..a friend of mine who finished from UNIUYO was complaining about lack of opportunities in her course to study abroad..I told her that 'do u know that UNIUYO is the only university in naija that has an agreement with NTNU (Norwegian university of sciience and technology) which is the topmost university in Norway for free masters and scholarship admission in the whole of naija.Check the following link below . there is a quota specifically allocated just for students who graduated from UNIUYO

I also think there is laziness of some nigerian gradautes, i wonder why someone who read a course like international relations, linguistics, english language, mass communication etc would not take out time to study or pay for language courses in french,german etc. If i read any of the above courses apart from scholarships and all, i would be thinking of working for the United Nations, UNDP and all. (b4 u can work for any of these international NGO'S u must know a second language apart from english language)
