Dimka conducted a coup and killed the head of state, Murtala Mohammed. Others like Danjuma and Babangida rallied and fouled the coup

Orkah conducted a coup against Babangida, his deputy Abacha fought back and the coup did not succeed

Gowon and his fellow Northerners conducted a coup, even though Ogundipe was receiving support from people like Ojukwu, he could not rise up and do anything

The point of this thread is that when a Yoruba man was to be president, it was an Igbo man who came to his support rather than the Yoruba nation who were comfortable to have their Regional Governor slaughtered and their most senior officer chased away, just because it was Northerners

quote your source and stop spreading lies, when the coup was staged Col Katsina had already instructed his friend Col Adebayo who had relayed the message to Ogundipe and Ogundipe had tried warning foolish Agiuyi Ironsi but he wouldn't listen as he insisted on going on his scheduled tour.. Aguiyi Ironsi's chief transport officer was President Buhari and his ADC was Theophilus Danjuma and Ogundipe had warned Aguiyi Ironsi of the grave danger but the stuborn dude still never listened,.. when Aguiyi was murdered his death wasn't announced but was only declare missing, and during coups until it was ascertained that the number one was dead or captured with proof of his body nobody dare announce himself the head of state... Ogundipe's attempt to mobilise troops from ikoyi close to the state house marina met stiff resistance as nobody listened to his orders.. since he had no troops to command he left Nigerian shores on a naval ship heading to UK, where he later settled and subsequently became an ambarsabor

Doesnt it look strange to you that a Yoruba man who was the most senior officer in Nigeria at the time, and should have been president, only got support from an Igbo in the East?

Dimka’s coup was made up of officers from the middle belt, there was no way such a coup carried out by a minority region would succeed. So, it was very easy for Danjuma to mobilize officers from the core north who were angry over the murder of Muritala and others from the south to counter the plot.

Orkah’s coup also suffered the same fate as Dimka’s coup. In addition, the plotters wanted to arrest IBB instead of killing him when they had the opportunity at Dodan attacks. Even if they had killed IBB, the coup would still have failed because of what I earlier pointed out.

In the case of Ogundipe, he was never part of the coup. That notwithstanding, he attempted to foil the coup by convening a meeting of the military ruling council immediately news broke out that a coup was ongoing. The council met and it was agreed that negotiations should be opened with Murtala and his boys at Ikeja cantonment. Gowon was the most senior northern member of the council and it was agreed that he should be the one to go to Ikeja and negotiate with the plotters while Ogundipe stays back at the state house. What the plotters wanted as at that time was secession (Araba) and not power.

On getting to Ikeja, Gowon jettisoned his mission and started making moves on how to take over as the head of state. Fortunately for him, he got the backing of Murtala, the entire northern military officers and rank and file, political and traditional rulers from the north and the American and UK governments. UK and US supported him because they were against secession of the northern region.

When Ogundipe realized that Gowon was a turncoat, he tried to mobilize troops to storm Ikeja but he was surrounded by northern soldiers and nobody obeyed his orders. Ojukwu who was making mouth on phone ran away from Enugu to hide in a police station in Onitsha. So, in the absence of any troop to call upon, he had no choice than to quickly leave the country. If not, Gowon and his northern boys would storm the state house and kill him because he was already a hindrance to him taking over.

I took my time to lecture you on what really happened so that uninformed Igbo folks like you can stop the misinformation.

Ojukwu never offered any real support other than making mouth on the phone. Did he send any troop to Lagos?

Ojukwu’s support was not out of love for Ogundipe or the Yorubas. It was just one of political expediency. Ogundipe was a very senior officer and Ojukwu was willing to take orders from a senior instead of Gowon who he saw as his junior.

first its not called President as it is not democracy, secondly he got support from his friends and not from the East, because even Soldiers in Lagos from Eastern Origin refused to follow him when he wanted them to trace Aguiyi to Ibadan, all of them shrugged and never wanted to fight even for Aguiyi.. If Ojukwu was serious he would had lead atleast several battalion straight through Ore to Lagos and then Ibadan to fight Northerners but instead he barely picked up the phone to call Ogundipe for Ogundipe to single handedly match to Radio Nigeria which was the most secured part of Lagos with soldiers crawling every inch and to just walk up and announce himself to Nigerians that he is the new head of state after he must have used his bare hands to fight all the soldiers stationed at radio Nigeria as chuck noris that he is

Abeg this issue is about common sense, a bank is being robbed and you want the most senior DPO to walk alone when his boys aint following him straight to the bank and kick the robbers out, because his friend Ojukwu from Enugu phoned him to do so? does it sound reasonable

If you can take your time to post these nonsense and posit it as historical facts, the least you could do is to provide some sort of verifiable source...right? I also like how you conveniently "forgot" the part where Brigadier Ogundipe was openly disrespected by a Northern soldier of a far more junior rank, who bluntly refused to carry our orders from Ogundipe and made that clear enough... say what you want, but the truth remains that no officer or leader from the Western region supported Ogundipe taking over from Ironsi in the aftermath of the counter coup... Not a SINGLE Yoruba leader resisted the arbitrary takeover of power by the North... at least Ojukwu was bold enough to refuse to recognize Gowons office, and stuck to that principle to the end.

What nonsense lol, some of you unintelligent mo.rons just relish regurgitating the same old crap tales you probably read from the internet, that's why Nairaland is a citadel of ignorance, poor cognitive reasoning and sheer stupidity... why would Ojukwu be hiding in the East when he had already repatriated all officers and men of Northern origin back to their regions? Every account I've read about the events of the coup and counter coup NEVER mentioned Ojukwu "hiding" anywhere in the East. As a matter of fact, the East remained at the time the only region that had no Northern soldier occupying its region or military installation... why Ojukwu SUCCESSFULLY sent all the Northern soldiers packing from the East, the Western region under Colonel Adeyinka recoursed to shamelessly hiding and kissing Aboki ass in the name of "playing it safe and savvy"... while the Yoruba population were groaning under Northern occupation all over Western region!

foolish people... First, there's nothing like "President" in the military era. Ogundipe never participated in the coup, Ojukwu never participated in the coup. How dare Ojukwu, a non coup player ask another non coup player to assume the seat of power without the permission of the coupists? . Both Ojukwu and Ogundipe were military men, so they understand the rules of engagement in a coup. The coup was purely a northern coup and their intentions was as clear as daylight. A coup is not a superiority contest whereby the most senior assume the seat of power. Every head of States was a Mastermind of a coup, Ogundipe was never one and cannot make himself a head of state without the coup plotters who had seized all the machinery of government. This was exactly how Ojukwu pushed millions of ibos into their untimely death.

From this silly deduction, it is safe to say that Gowon who claimed not to have participated in July 29, 1967 coup and publicly supported by the Yari.ba peeps should not have assumed the position of Head of State? Nigeria is indeed a basket of fools. What rules of engagement are you talking about? In a fractured coup, anybody had a shot to assume power. I can say you are not a student of history. If the coup plotters had seized all the machinery of the government, there should not have been a war. The July 29, 1967 coup plotters did not have control of government machinery in eastern region and Midwestern region. Maybe partial control of western region due to the brazen display of cowardice by the Yari.ba peeps who capitulated at the sight of Nigerian soldiers from northern region of Nigeria.

Gowon has repeatedly denied being a participant in July 29, 1967 coup in Nigeria. It is funny how most Nigerians play the hand of their argument. It acceptable to you that Gowon who was most senior officer from the northern region to assume the position of Head of State while Ogundipe who was the most senior officer in Nigeria army not acceptable to you. Nigeria will never see progress as most Nigerians have a frame of mind reserved for the ninnies.

If the coup plotters had seized all the machinery of the government, there should not have been a war. The July 29, 1967 coup plotters did not have control of government machinery in eastern region and Midwestern region. Maybe partial control of western region due to the brazen display of cowardice by the Yari.ba peeps who capitulated at the sight of Nigerian soldiers from northern region of Nigeria.
who is this idiot?. the coup was successful. the coup plotters determined who takes over the seat of power. whenever the seat of power falls, a coup becomes successful.
there was a war because ojukwu declared biafra in breach of the oath he had sworn to which had no secession clause. prior to that, northern soldiers no longer took orders from ojukwu in the east.

Do not pat yourself on the back. Yari.ba peeps precipitated the most killing during the era in discuss. Majors Samuel Daramola and Ibrahim Taiwo readily come to mind.

I stated clearly in my post that Gowon was with Ogundipe initially before he became a turncoat and seized power for himself.

I never said it was acceptable to me for Ogundipe not to become the head of state. My point is clear, Ogundipe was not in any position to seize power from those that masterminded the counter coup. He had no troop to enforce his seniority. If he had insisted, the plotters would have killed him without thinking twice.
