My advice is for guys to wait since you couldn't sell. Those that bought high will definitely be around 30 to 50% loss now. If you know you bought good dividend paying stocks, wait it out. This one too will come and go. NSE will still remain.

And if prices continue to decline, target to buy only based on DY. What do I mean?

If you bought stock X at N10. And the company pays N1 as dividend. This is 10% dividend yield (DY) .

If the stock continue to slide and it goes to N5, while you suffer 50% loss in capital, you know that the DY is now 20% presuming they continue to pay that N1.

If you are satisfied with 20% DY, you can go in for it and load if only you have money o.

If price continues to fall towards N4, you are losing but your DY will keep increasing assuming the dividend remains constant. You buy alot. That way, you will be enjoying a cashflow even when your portfolio is bleeding.

But those I pity are those that buy stocks that doesn't give cashflow in event that the stocks stay depressed for long. You get nothing in capital appreciation and still get no dividend. It is like hungry bingo that fools a very slim and hungry man. He can't poo neither can he vomit. You end up becoming Aaron!

Those on cash will be happy with a falling market because they can enter when they are okay with their DY of the stock they see. At this point, they get greedy looking for DY >25%.

While those in the market will be praying for recovery, they will be praying for more tanking. grin

Bedbug told her offsprings to stay calm, that whatever that is hot must definitely be cold. So relax, it will be well after a while.

Very good analysis. But indirectly they are loosing (time value for money). At least they have DY to cure the time factors...

The problem with your point here is that this 'money' (investment) need high frequency differential calculus every passing day to pin down it's Brownian value on the insipidly distorted value plane, which for now is gravitationally encumbered.... grin

It is either they sell at a loss or they just pretend as if all is well and enjoy the cashflow that comes with it.

It is always very painful when you lose gains and then lose capital join. Paper loss anyway.

That is why if one can preserve capital in a bearish trend, one should do so ASAP.

You are absolutely right. Take for example, so many traders was rejoicing last night when the future opened green, but emotionally they went in with the hope that market will bounced back this morning...and presently market Dow is down already with 350 points. Emotions in stock market is a death sentence to your capital. If people can stay away from it, they will do better than expected. Why would I buy a stock of 13 Naira @25 because of dividend of 2+ Naira? That’s like 45% down in capital? This means one need More than 50% rise in price to break even not talking of profit....It is about facts over fantasy

At this juncture, I hope Zenith keeps falling to lower than N16 so I can use my dividends to mop up more units at a discount. It is because the Coronavirus has now made Zenith Bank a candidate of N13. Zenith Bank is never a stock of N13. if we get to buy at this price, we will look for money and buy. if it gets to N10, we will buy more. We are not going to panic because NSE is losing points. Congratulations to those who are loaded in cash.

2% of a country with 100m people will have 2m deaths. No be chicken dey die o. Human beings.

At a point I was asking myself all these '100 new deaths added', are they not humans that are counted as ordinary number.

And where there is no cure or vaccine, there is instant panic.

And any disease that is communicable and that needs quarantine destroys economy. Because you close a section of the business or sector to prevent further spread.

Market is pricing in the economic effect that will come after the deaths, diseases.

Let's put things in proper perspectives now. Imagine Air China flies into Nigeria 3 times a day, everyday. A ban on air China means that the Company that supplies fuel for refuelling the plane in Nigeria will be in crisis. Those baggage companies that support airline passenger boarding and disembarkment are in trouble. Hotels that support huge number of chinese tourist are in trouble. Shopping Malls will have reduced patronage. The person that supplies groceries to the hotel is in trouble. Airport taxis waiting to pick passengers will have reduced passengers. There are huge cascading effects.

Open your mind and see the effect.

But there is no way an entire country will be catching coronavirus. I get your point, but like in every economic crisis, propaganda or mildly put, information, is always key. Before you know it, everybody catches the diluted or exaggerated media view, effectively programming the mind.

During the 2008 crisis, Most businesses just went into limbo because they were programmed to believe the world was coming to an end. People were just sitting on their cash - nobody was willing to spend because nobody was spending. Everybody caught the bug!

There is a lot of fear in the air right now, and it is not doing anybody any good. That same fear is the reason somebody will be willing to pay 500% more for a hand sanitizer! Same reason you see people walking about with surgical masks, which have been proven to be useless. An Italian (who is most likely to pull through the infection) enters with symptoms, and the country goes hysterical. Is that the way to manage crisis? During ebola, propagandists made people believe that drinking salt and bathing with same was a sure cure. In a week in Enugu, many traders abandoned their trades and became instant salt merchants. The result? Excessive salt intake killed more people than ebola itself!

The current virus sure has economic effect, but it is not as bad as most think. I am more realistic than optimistic, because we have all seen it before, again and again. This too, shall pass sooner than we expect! cool cool

I absolutely agree. I'm neck deep in Zenith, but I'm genuinely not bothered again. People just panic unnecessarily. I have panicked in the past, but not anymore. This has been the most profitable bank in Nigeria for two years in a row. A very solid stock with sound fundamentals, good management, strong cash reserves, etc. Even with all the hullabaloo regarding Buhari's economic management and this Coronavirus (which will still be defeated in the same way SARS and Ebola was defeated), this is still a good stock to be in. Thankfully, I'll get a healthy dividend from Zenith Bank in a couple of weeks, and after the mark down, we will still wait it out and see how low it goes. I'm even praying it gets to N9 or N10 so we buy cheap. : grin I'm dumping 80% of my dividend in buying more. Save 10% (don't have urgent need of the cash anyway). Then will use 10% to go somewhere to relax and de-stress myself. Selah.

If it is not quickly addressed, everyone will catch it. That is why they use extreme measures to contain it. Measures like quarantine, closures of companies, churches, mosques. In Wuhan, we read they sealed buildings to prevent people from leaving the buildings. These has economic implications.

If you do nothing, everyone will catch it.

As for me I’ve disposed 65% of my portfolio (All banking stocks) at approximately 15% loss. I’m just left with WAPCO and Dang Sugar.
Let’s watch from the side lines.
I don’t even care about the dividends anymore when my capital is at risk.
