My story Got employed sometimes last year in a company on the island. My area was/is far from the place and I had to rent a house nearby to ease my movement. Few days to the work, I noticed things were not rosy within the staff in the HR. There was this young lady who was a deputy HR and was rumored to be a cousin to the owner of the company . She was at loggerhead with the HR manager for only God know reasons. Third week into the job,we were laid off for reasons still not known to us. Suffice to know that we were never given employment letter. We were told it was delayed by this said lady but we or kept hope until the inevitable happened that third week. We became victims of power struggles between these two people. We were paid only the salary of that month as we were told to go as we got to work that fateful morning. Though i'm currently teaching now but i'm still battling with the aftermath as I have never recovered from that thinking of being used. |

iamJ:Andela's business model is to hire senior software devs and outsource them to companies, including American firms. Mark Zuckerberg, who's American, was a lead investor in Andela. In Germany, there is a package for software engineers ( classified under Technology) to relocate to Germany. There are tons and tons of devs with high skillset, working for American, Canadian, German, British, Estonian, EU, etc from their homes in Nigeria. They are paid, the equivalent of what devs in these first world country would earn too, just that certain fees and packages (e.g healthcare) might be exempt. Devs are hot cakes and are classified as hard to fill roles, in job openings. That's the reason why we say, Tech is the new oil and gas. So your posit, is utter bullocks. |

This just happened recently...I just got suspended indefinitely by my line manager who can't even do half of my job..I think I made it obviously clear they couldn't survive without me albeit humbly cos I treat all my junior colleagues and partners with utmost respect..this happened in January and I am yet to be recalled although my Regional manager is working on taking me to a new branch but I must confess that the past few months has been hell..with wifey just having delivered our first child. At the moment just equiping myself with knowledge to perform better if I get recalled or get another job.. |

Stallion93:750 is not much if you are working fora foreign tech company, they actually pay you in dollars, that's just like 500 dollars per week, no developer will even collect that low in their country hence they outsource to foreign and less develop economy |

[quote author=oluwaseyi000 post=87240908] Why we were fired? I joined this company last year, few days after finishing my NYSC, they have the highest number of software developers in Africa and I was loving life, the salary is great with breakfast and lunch They keep on employing so many software engineer with time the engineer become more than the available job, I saw it coming but I don't know what the board was thinking 2. How did the firing process happen? We have a global (online) meeting which people are asked not to miss, I was not even listening very well to what they are saying, the president said there are more developer than engagement to they have to let some people go, a mail was sent to all impacted people and I discovered what has just happened Almost 400 people has been fired across Africa 3. Aftermath of being fired… how did you feel, have you recovered, did you get something better? The company is actually a great one, they brought in pychologist to speak with us, bring in different recruiter, and other stuff, most importantly the payoff was reasonable that I can afford a Mac laptop of almost half-a-million Luckily for me I got another reasonable job in less than 3 weeks of been retrenched I always laugh when people complain there is no job in Nigeria, less than 5 month after leaving my previous company I have turned down almost 4 other offers some even paying than my current one [/quote Don't say that...u got job offers because u were in IT don't make others feel less inferior because they couldn't secure a job. |

Normally they will call me a hater but because I'm asking the right questions they insult instead of call me a hater One just called me a hater, didn't take long for them to return to their basic instincts and attack crudely But as long as my remote operator phone is working, I will speak out ![]() |

oluwaseyi000:The emphasized part of your post is so true. There are jobs in Nigeria, it is just that a lot of people seeking employment opportunities lack skills to add value to their employers. Employers are not "charity organizations", if they pay you x amount they need you to generate 10x amount (10 times whatever you are being paid). |
