Share your experience with us if you have ever been fired. It would be better if we can share:

1. Why we were fired?
2. How did the firing process happen?
3. Aftermath of being fired… how did you feel, have you recovered, did you get something better?

So, I’ll start:

Sometimes last year, I got an unbelievable offer (well above #750k) at a remote company. I bought a PC, subscribed for large data and set-up a workspace. On Monday which was resumption day, I turned on my PC, logged in and started the online meeting… everything went well for the first day and I got introduced to my colleagues. My friend and I actually got employed for same position, so we usually chatted while working. To be onboarded, we had to install a productivity monitoring tool on our PCs, we were told everything we did on the PC would be captured if the tool was turned ON but I really don’t know why I cared less.

On Wednesday same week, we had a short and simple test, during the test, I asked my friend for an answer as I wasn’t so sure, he responded and that was it.

On Thursday, I had a quick one-on-one call with my manager, I was fired. Apparently, I wasn’t supposed to ask for assistance while taking the test. I apologized but the answer was a straight NO (you sabi how oyinbo people strict). So in other words, I was sacked because I cheated ☹.

Well, they paid me for the few days I worked

I have experienced other sad situations, but this has to be the worst. I was so depressed, the following Sunday, I went to Church and it was while Pastor asked us to greet our neighbor, I remembered I didn’t brush… LMAO.

Now, I got something with abit lesser pay but still very chilled grin

What kind of IT are you into?

Yeah. Got hired into a multinational and worked a few years before I was sacked. I was young and naïve, worked with 'multinational pride', to the extent of calling my direct boss by his first name ( forgetting we're all Nigerians working in Nigeria). The guy (my manager) benched me with seat belt, giving my colleagues tasks to execute and leaving me out. When Nigeria slided into recession, viola!!! the guy recommended me and mostly other guys from my tribe to be sacked(people from my tribe are seen as threats because of our smartness, no pride intended),we were all sacked. Then I earned about 450k.

Worked in a couple of other companies, moving from one to another as offers kept getting better and to the glory of God, I have at sight a salary of 7 figures every month.

Lesson learnt: the first attribute you need to progress after attitude, is loyalty. REM you're not indispensable, before you someone was doing it and after you, someone will do it!

Also learn the culture of the company. In my company it's normal to call managers by their name. We don't even use Mr or Mrs title. We even give them nicknames and it's all good.

Wow!

One of the things I've learnt over time while working, is to be one step ahead.

I once worked in a company where my line manager was a compete nut head. I saw the handwriting on the wall that I needed to leave. I fired up my cv ASAP and got an offer (way better offer than I was paid) and dropped my resignation letter. My line manager was shocked...I knew he would have fired me, or atleast recommended my sack, if I didn't take that drastic step of been 1 step ahead. Soon after I left, 2 other devs, were fired.

Everywhere I have worked in my short career, I've always tried to read moves, anticipate actions and moves, position myself in a way, no one will take me by surprise.
I did this recently, and it paid off, though I have not resigned yet, and I just got a job that is far better, so I am leaving by the end of this month.

I taught in a school for two years in Nasarawa with 18k salary. I used the little could saved to purchase Msc form. Before the admission, I got another teaching job in Abuja where I was able to save 600k within 6months. I finished my masters since 2014, I have never been able to earn up to my previous salary even as a lecturer. Unfortunately, we were disengaged last Dec in Ekiti State University without committing any crime.

If there's one thing I've learnt from this thread it's that the poverty in Naija is real. Poverty also starts as a mindset.

Mid Level Software Developers earn around 250-400k in Nigeria. Seniors earn 500k upwards, in fact sometime last year there was a vacancy in Lekki and the Salary was between 800k - 1m.

If you work remotely for a foreign company as a senior and you're good, you can even hit 1.5m monthly.

Before you try to argue, I've been in this industry for the past seven years.

If you want to be like this get a laptop and start learning how to code.

Beep me sir, I need a career

For all those who are asking for names of such companies that pay that much, I will suggest that you start by learning the required skills and making them available on freelancing platforms like fiverr and freelancer. When you have built your skills level and built a portfolio, you can upgrade by joining upwork and optimizing your Linkedin account, then you can one day laugh at those who argue that it is not possible to earn $2,000 (700k) in Nigeria.

To reach that level, go on those platforms (click here for) fiverr and focus on the tech sections. If you are not good in programming, you can start by learning how to configure different applications like CRM, Email marketing platforms with their automation e.g Mailchimp, insightly, sendblue etc, Automation platforms like Zapier and many other things you can do on these freelancing platforms. Use them as a springboard and leave politics sections argument for 3 months and you will begin to see the difference in your life. You will need to download a lot of tutorials and watch tons of Youtube videos and fail on many jobs before you begin to get a traction. Do not think any foreign employer will just give you $2000 just like that, you will have to work hard to learn the required skills, make mistakes, learn from them and become proficient.

You will need to be patient. Give yourself up to one year or even 18 months. Yes, I said so. It can take that long or even longer to make a headway, funny enough once it starts, you will look back and wonder why you ever contemplated crime.

Finally, if you do not have the mind for coding and programming, start with digital marketing skills and begin to narrow down to specific digital marketing niches that fits your personality and skill level.

I do hope I am speaking to someone today.

I did when I saw your post and na topnotch...more than 800 + employees and millions of followers. even $400k salary per year dey. Don't even mind those guys. I have seen dropshippers, freelancers who did $40k this last February in profits. Poverty mindset is something people should pray to be removed from them this year by force.

We started the work as a field agent sometime last year, it was a telecommunications work (MTN 4G upgrade) I was still in my final year in school when I joined. 4 months into the job I was made the supervisor, when I became the supervisor, I notice the agents were been short changed, in terms of benefits and payments, I tried working on the irregularities but it bounced back to me, gbam I was fired for lodging a complaint on the delayed salaries of the workers.

A. Month after, my depth profile became so high, I was the one supporting my family and sponsoring my junior ones. I hate myself for trying to be holier than thou while at work. Till this moment, I've not gained myself. I've lost everything. At this point I can only hope God sees my heart and reward me if truly God support good decision.

You were still young.

Capitalists lack emotions.

You are not expected to complain at work.

It generates negative energy.

Why we were fired?
I joined this company last year, few days after finishing my NYSC, they have the highest number of software developers in Africa and I was loving life, the salary is great with breakfast and lunch

They keep on employing so many software engineer with time the engineer become more than the available job, I saw it coming but I don't know what the board was thinking

2. How did the firing process happen?
We have a global (online) meeting which people are asked not to miss, I was not even listening very well to what they are saying, the president said there are more developer than engagement to they have to let some people go, a mail was sent to all impacted people and I discovered what has just happened

Almost 400 people has been fired across Africa

3. Aftermath of being fired… how did you feel, have you recovered, did you get something better?

The company is actually a great one, they brought in pychologist to speak with us, bring in different recruiter, and other stuff, most importantly the payoff was reasonable that I can afford a Mac laptop of almost half-a-million

Luckily for me I got another reasonable job in less than 3 weeks of been retrenched

I always laugh when people complain there is no job in Nigeria, less than 5 month after leaving my previous company I have turned down almost 4 other offers some even paying than my current one

I so much saw the retrenchment coming that I once created a similar thread as this https://www.nairaland.com/5352267/why-how-loose-last-job
