If there's one thing I've learnt from this thread it's that the poverty in Naija is real. Poverty also starts as a mindset.

Mid Level Software Developers earn around 250-400k in Nigeria. Seniors earn 500k upwards, in fact sometime last year there was a vacancy in Lekki and the Salary was between 800k - 1m.

If you work remotely for a foreign company as a senior and you're good, you can even hit 1.5m monthly.

Before you try to argue, I've been in this industry for the past seven years.

If you want to be like this get a laptop and start learning how to code.

Exactly. Instead of using laptops / Internet to do yahoo yahoo. India today has become a tech hub for many global companies. Nigeria has the potential to do the same but some are not ready to do the hard work or be patient to learn.

This IamJ guy dey stupid sha.

No wonder they say those guys that spend a lot of time in the BBNaija and romance sections are usually stupid and can't contribute much to sane conversations.

Egbon you f**k up. Stick to what you know.

A friend that started learning programming as recent as 2017 is now on his second remote job. My other friend almost got a $90k yearly remote contract. Some of my classmates have relocated abroad based on this ICT thing. These are people I know personally.

One Jss3 student disrespected me, had to correct her, but she started to insult me, which resulted to me sending her out of the class...
Next day, her mum came to the school, and demanded the teacher be sacked, nah so Dem take sack me o, because the mama nah Russian. I later found out the girl was the granddaughter of Muhammad Lawal Uwais, Cheif Justice of Supreme Court 1995-2006. How I survived 4 months of being jobless and penniless is still a surprise to me, I didn't even call anyone to ask for anything.

Kindly check weworkremotely.com n confirm for urself. You go even see tech job offers of 90-100k CAD.
Yeah I use wework. Always get regret mails for all my applications. I've seen jobs for 18$ per hour job but that doesn't translate to 80k a month.
Even crossover for work pay 30k dollars a year for software support engineer position.

80k CAD a month is over stretching it.

Yeah. Got hired into a multinational and worked a few years before I was sacked. I was young and naïve, worked with 'multinational pride', to the extent of calling my direct boss by his first name ( forgetting we're all Nigerians working in Nigeria). The guy (my manager) benched me with seat belt, giving my colleagues tasks to execute and leaving me out. When Nigeria slided into recession, viola!!! the guy recommended me and mostly other guys from my tribe to be sacked(people from my tribe are seen as threats because of our smartness, no pride intended),we were all sacked. Then I earned about 450k.

Worked in a couple of other companies, moving from one to another as offers kept getting better and to the glory of God, I have at sight a salary of 7 figures every month.

Lesson learnt: the first attribute you need to progress after attitude, is loyalty. REM you're not indispensable, before you someone was doing it and after you, someone will do it!
I guess u are from Igbo working with Yoruba person right?

what about 2million or 6 million a month.nigerians don't talk about such things and one major problem in Nigeria is information.

There are people who do deals worth billions,I know of a man that rejected a 1.5b a month offer to lease his land out to an investor, you might think it is impossible but it happens in Nigeria.

What part of Nigeria is this please,? I teach Mathematics also

Mrshape:
mine: I was not fired but I loss the job because of let me say greediness on my part.
I am a mathematics teacher I do private lessons,
So this woman called me for lesson, I billed her 100K per month (three times a week one hour thirty minutes each)

She begged for #60,000 I said no my last is 80K
(i don't know the spirit that was speaking on my behalf because I know that was not me, maybe the spirit of one of those motivational speakers saying never settle for less)

Because my current lessons are far below her offer at that time.

When I reach house the regret I have, I have never had that in my life, well, it was a lesson that helped me in future negotiations

I haven't really been fired because I have only worked once. The connection came courtesy of the girl I met when I moved to this new city. Took my CV to her mum who did the rest and I started. Hardly had I gone past a month when she expected me to do her bidding (my girl).
She would be like, "that's not how it's done in my family." I got fed up and told her it's not always her family that I have mine too so do people. I told her to stop using her family as a determinant to how things should be done and she called me an ingrate.
I went to my work place the next morning and handed in my resignation letter.
I started my business afterwards and I have no regrets. I forgot her too. She is still surprised as to how far I have come in life.

Worked somewhere in Lagos, salary wasn't big but at least it was taking me home.

I was close to a babe like that, not dating but we were close.
It continued like that, little did I know some Ogas were peer-reviewing and she no gree, so they felt I was the cause.

It was a job we did 6 days a week and in shifts. She and I were on same shift.

One day, She and I were called up to the HR and told that our activities were becoming too close..Does it affect our work? Do we come together to work? Do we live together?...they just told us one person had to go.

I stood up and signed the damn letter and moved out of the state. She was to come join me in my new place of work 3 months later.

Honourable man.
Respect.

I taught in a school for two years in Nasarawa with 18k salary. I used the little could saved to purchase Msc form. Before the admission, I got another teaching job in Abuja where I was able to save 600k within 6months. I finished my masters since 2014, I have never been able to earn up to my previous salary even as a lecturer. Unfortunately, we were disengaged last Dec in Ekiti State University without committing any crime.

I hope you are not a lecturer in fac of Science

Lolx lots of funny comments here shall.

From what I have read so far, our mindset is the biggest hindrance to our progress.

My Boss has a target of $5k — $10 per day. He's a trader and investor.

There was one remote job I applied to that had 4 recruitment stages. The salary if converted to naira was over 1million monthly. I had talked with 2 Nigerians currently working in the coy and they told me they pay promptly, however, there is no promotion and some other cons which they informed me of.
I was on the 4th stage b4 the final interview and devil used my hubby to attack. This stage has 100 questions to answer in15mins. Hubby just came back from God knows where , entered my room and said I should give him my charger. I waved at him giving him sign to leave my room but he insisted I should go and bring him the charger as he needed to charge his phone urgently. I lost concentration that was it.
The thought of it now just changed my mood.

Nb- I saw the job on LinkedIn.
You should have give him One Slap to cast the devil outa him !!

Share your experience with us if you have ever been fired. It would be better if we can share:

1. Why we were fired?
2. How did the firing process happen?
3. Aftermath of being fired… how did you feel, have you recovered, did you get something better?

So, I’ll start:

Sometimes last year, I got an unbelievable offer (well above #750k) at a remote company. I bought a PC, subscribed for large data and set-up a workspace. On Monday which was resumption day, I turned on my PC, logged in and started the online meeting… everything went well for the first day and I got introduced to my colleagues. My friend and I actually got employed for same position, so we usually chatted while working. To be onboarded, we had to install a productivity monitoring tool on our PCs, we were told everything we did on the PC would be captured if the tool was turned ON but I really don’t know why I cared less.

On Wednesday same week, we had a short and simple test, during the test, I asked my friend for an answer as I wasn’t so sure, he responded and that was it.

On Thursday, I had a quick one-on-one call with my manager, I was fired. Apparently, I wasn’t supposed to ask for assistance while taking the test. I apologized but the answer was a straight NO (you sabi how oyinbo people strict). So in other words, I was sacked because I cheated ☹.

Well, they paid me for the few days I worked

I have experienced other sad situations, but this has to be the worst. I was so depressed, the following Sunday, I went to Church and it was while Pastor asked us to greet our neighbor, I remembered I didn’t brush… LMAO.

Now, I got something with abit lesser pay but still very chilled grin
can we connect? I need your help to break into this industry. Can you find time to mentor me?

Why we were fired?
I joined this company last year, few days after finishing my NYSC, they have the highest number of software developers in Africa and I was loving life, the salary is great with breakfast and lunch

They keep on employing so many software engineer with time the engineer become more than the available job, I saw it coming but I don't know what the board was thinking

2. How did the firing process happen?
We have a global (online) meeting which people are asked not to miss, I was not even listening very well to what they are saying, the president said there are more developer than engagement to they have to let some people go, a mail was sent to all impacted people and I discovered what has just happened

Almost 400 people has been fired across Africa

3. Aftermath of being fired… how did you feel, have you recovered, did you get something better?

The company is actually a great one, they brought in pychologist to speak with us, bring in different recruiter, and other stuff, most importantly the payoff was reasonable that I can afford a Mac laptop of almost half-a-million

Luckily for me I got another reasonable job in less than 3 weeks of been retrenched

I always laugh when people complain there is no job in Nigeria, less than 5 month after leaving my previous company I have turned down almost 4 other offers some even paying than my current one

I so much saw the retrenchment coming that I once created a similar thread as this https://www.nairaland.com/5352267/why-how-loose-last-jobwhy-how-loose-last-jobh
