The fulanis did NOT colonize the hausa tribe, like the OP stated above. Rather, they migrated to the hausaland, integrated and inter-married with the hausas.

The Fula people people speak Fulfude as a first language and Hausa as a second language. Many Hausas do not understand Fulfude but all the Fulanis I know speak and understand fluent Hausa.

In fact, I speak staccato Hausa despite having only lived here for three years. And if I wanted to have a private conversation in full public glare, I resort to English or Urhobo. Hausas in the general majority are mentally lazy and cannot take themselves out of their comfort zone to learn something new. This is not an insult. It's a fact. No coloniser, be it the Fula people of Futa jallon or the British can make them lose that language.
