He's always been the sneakier one. While Bin Laden was always in your face talking all the time, and leaving traces all over, Zawahiri was always in the background sneaking around. He was pretty much unnoticeable until he succeeded bin Laden.

I think he also learnt a thing or two from how bin Laden got clipped.
