The DG of NAFDAC actually stated it too .... She said if Corona Virus spreads that we Nigerians will be wiped out .... She also said 90% of all our active drugs are imported from China and China has stopped exporting so, we can have drug problem very soon and increase in drug prices.

She said it's true Chloroquine is effective against Corona Virus in the lab but it is yet to be clinically confirmed (Maybe in Human) .....

She said HIV drugs was initially patented, no body could produce the drug without facing law suits .... it was Mandela and Dr Hamid of India among others that fought for rolling HIV aids drugs into Africa and developing country before the rolling nearly 30m Africans had died from HIV before HIV drugs were rolled out.....

I disagreed with them , though Nigeria can't boost of having sufficiently to our requirements, that doesn't mean we don't have those drugs produced here,
THIS CALLS FOR AN OPPORTUNITY FOR NIGERIA MANUFACTURERS TO WAKE UP AND RUN MULTIPRODUCTION FOR MORE OUTPUT THAT'S ALL.

It's a shame that Nigeria cannot boast of self sufficiency in the manufacture of essential drugs!
Put laws in place to guard our drug market, the government refused.
Improve on power supply so that the few manufacturers would spend less on electricity generation and channel the resources into expanding their bases, they also refused!

Now that China has decided to cut down on export of their pharmaceuticals, we'll start running helter skelter and when they eventually lift the ban, we'll heave a sigh of relieve and forget about any plans to find a permanent solution to drugs insecurity.

We are still talking about RESEARCH. Mind you, you are not the only one that studies pharmacology up to PhD. Most of the PhD holders in pharmacology in Nigeria are still pharmacists. The area of drugs discovery and development is multidisciplinary encompassing people from chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy( including pharm chem, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics, pharm micro) medicine, immunology, pharmacology etc. Anybody with the brain and qualifications from the above fields can discover or contribute to drug discovery but ON PAPER. It is the pharmacist that converts the paper discovery into live drug molecules and then compound such molecules and beautifully package them appropriately to what we have as medicines!
