Success is a mindset...I was a poor individual, a poor student but omo I am that person you'd have to kill and cut off his head before I ever give up. So here I am, doing decently for myself and my family.

I have starved, I have seen my parents and siblings hungry. I have run away from home twice just to escape poverty.

I have sold bread, pure water, akamu, I have worked in a pure water factory when they were all manual, I have seen my parents swallow their pride to borrow just so we'd go to school and have something to feed on, I have seen all this and I don't blame no village people.

All I needed through all this travails was an opportunity and the mindset to see it as one.

Don't get me started with the hand me downs, JESU! I wish no man poverty, no matter what side of the Niger you find yourself, it's worse than death. In death, you are at peace.

How did I do it: I read alot, I started doing graphics design and video editing to augment, switched to adding one or two kpali by browsing newspapers to know what's the latest professional course to do for the career of my choice, tried my hands in so many useless certifications that I had to chuck most of them.

I have confidence, my balls are made of brass and I am a fast learner.

Everything day brings it's own opportunities and I try to learn one new thing a day. Every useless information I have learned had come in handy in my current profession.

I waste nothing.

My advise, No fear anybody, nah hustle we all come this life to hustle, the highest them go talk nah NO, the worst they can do is call security.

This is something. I can feel your gut in your message. cheesy

Truly speaking most family escape poverty through fraud or Malaysian money. In dis country even if u are working u hardly earn above 100k n for me dats still poverty, bcus u have bills n families to settle
even though you have a point, but not all families.

I can list 6 things that helped most Nigerian families escape poverty and they are:

0.) Trading & Importation

1.) Yahoo Yahoo or OBT or 419 (old name)

2.) American Visa Lottery - this helped lots of Nigerians escape poverty

3.) Illegal migration to Europe via Sahara Desert

4.) Internet freelancing

5.) Mini Importation & Dropshipping (2013 to 2017) for modern youths

These are the things that helped most Nigerian families escape poverty.

1 in every 10 Nigerian family escaped poverty through any of the above methods I listed grin

I was raised in a family of 10. At a point I was sent home from my school because no money for school fees. I hawk murchiya (pardon me I don't know the name in English),

After my secondary I moved to Abuja to hustle. At a point I got a job in a business center where I was to be paid N4k a month as salary. But 4 months in the job I wasn't paid a dime as salary. How I survive, only God knows. One time I could no afford money to even eat. So my friend and I will go inside bush to go and pluck unriped guava just to survive for that day. Let me also add that I was sleeping inside in a saloon. I always sleep whenever the owner of the salon finishes for the day. I will spray a clothe on the floor to sleep, no pillow, no nothing inside the shop.

Time past, I gather small money which I used to go write JAMB. On the day of the JAMB, after the exam, I didn't have transport money to come back. I just went there, without even thinking how I am going to come back. So what I did was to beg one man who brought his children with his car. As God will have it, they were going close to where I live.

JAMB result came out I score 191. Hmm what do I say. Live goes on. To my greatest surprise I got admitted into ABU, Zaria with the result.

In the university I didn't have money for accommodation, so I had to squat with other students because I used my savings to pay for the school fees. While in the university, sometimes I go hustle outside campus just to get money to survive.

As time goes one, I was able to secured 2 scholarships which has helped me complete my university and came out with 2.1.

Today I am a graduate, owned a car, and now i am into freelancing - website development and graphics design.

In all these I give God the glory and I am still hoping for better life ahead.

An inspiring testimony.

May GOD continue to bless you.

One thing I know from experience is bad attitude, that's not been flexible and compromising in a business setting (and I don't mean been corrupt, just plain rubbish stubborn head) will slow you down so much in this wealth journey. Am that one person that believe so much in a particular trade because I had made serious cash from it before uni. Infact, it made my uni bills. Had opportunity with a colleague, who after my uni has become wealthy in the trade. I talked to him and he decided to finance a stock I wanted to buy but, I failed to discuss sharing formula with him. I just took it that he his lending me to pay him back (over 3mil) if and only if he acts as my agent, which is the legit thing in the industry. My brother ontop that consignment I slept three nights on the way. Apparently its a big truck transporting it from S/E and based on the humongous credit from my friend I decided not to take any chances. I arrived, sold and my guy mentioned for the first time that am working for him, the very first time he would ever mention something like that. Meaning, he keeps the capital and interest, and gives whatever he wants. I bust. I wouldn't take it, we went into a shouting match, and finally was asked to leave his office. He later called for we to settle but I won't come. I was still obviously angry. In anger I had told him to keep everything. After my anger has subsided I called requesting we meet outside his office to discuss, he insisted am I come to his office but I wouldn't bulge. Am not about to go back where I was chased from. He refused, I refused and we ended up not meeting. My own part of the deal stucked with him. Fast forward to a year later, after him I stopped as I didn't have capital to follow up and didn't want to take the matter any further, apparently I had no evidence or witness on my side, everything happened in his office and all present was his guys. So, I decided to leave business till I can finance myself or could work out a better deal with someone else. I decided to use my cert, I got a 9-5er that was horrible and was never happy going there. My mind is always on business, I actually believed thats the only venture that can truly satisfy me and grant me the time I had always seemed for. In short, business has been my dream. I soon had to swallow my pride I started calling friends in the industry, even my friend. Till this day none is willing to talk business with me because of that fracas with my friend. The industry is really that small. I find it very hard to let go and have even suggest I work with any of them as employeee just to be in the system on whatever pay they want, I was met with stark silence. I doubted, forgave myself, swallowed my pride, and still nothing yet. No job, because I finally resigned to go seek happiness. Am on the street and still confused on how to move. So...be flexible in business, always put discussed agreement in writing no matter what, then go further I suggest both parties append their signature. As for me, am still confident more than ever that this phase shall pass, and I will be all in your face to write my complete story.
Vicas2000:
We were so poor...I could not go to uni when all my friends were.

Here's what helped....

1. I read Lots of books. Motivational books. Business books. Marketing books. One that helped me know there was more to life was Robert Schuller book 'Tough times don't last but tough people do'. I borrowed a foto copied version from a friend. That was in 1997. I would Starve myself so I can buy books. Sometimes I foto copy from other people or borrow it.

By 2007...i stumbled on some CDs by Sam Adeyemi and he advised the best way to get out of poverty is to learn a skill and make money from it.

2. I learnt a skill. That paid lots of money. I learnt copywriting. Online marketing. Direct response marketing. I ready everything and watched all videos I could find online by Frank Kern....Dan Kennedy and started applying it.

3. I would read a lot about rich people. Wht they do. What houses they buy....what business they run. How they make money.

4. I would also read any business book. Financial newspapers. I am that person that would buy a newspaper to see the adverts in it and trace what those companies do.

Overtime...I started making money. Made first million in 2008. And then just rinse and repeat.

I have lost millions too. But a lot better now financially. Travelled the world. Met lot of people. Built contact.

And at the ripe age of 35 got a degree from a foreign University.

Funny enough....that degree is now useless. Even in full time employment in my country of residence...i have never been asked for the certificate. What matters most is my skills.

I grew up with my siblings in the small village of magama, in jibia local government, katsina state. For whatever reason, my dad refused to work but opened a pool betting shop where old miserable men come to waste their destinies with the wishful thinking that one day they will hit jackpot. My dad couldn't feed the 8 of us including my mum. I was just about 9yrs old then and the first son. We found ourselves more at home than in school due to acute poverty.
One day I decided to do something. At the age of 10, I could already speak Hausa language fluently, and mingled so well with Hausa kids. What I did was narrating our poverty state to my friend janaidu, and pleaded with him if I could come do chores for his mum and her co-wives. His dad was a rich marabout with 4 wives and about 16 children then. My friend janaidu was the first son of the second wife.
So that was how I became a glorified house boy in the house of my friend, but to be honest Hausa people are very kind. This man called me one day and my siblings and sent all of us back to school. He even went as far as allowing us move to one of his houses where we stayed for close to 10yrs. This man was practically feeding our entire family, but on my part I made sure I worked hard to take care of his family chores for about 10yrs.
In 2005, we moved to suleja, Niger State where I hit the streets immediately to sell water in truck and some days offload yams at madala market. I was able to save up to sit for waec and jamb, and with God on my side, I got admission to study international studies and diplomacy in uniben. I graduated and later on applied for law and was also admitted. I did alot of hustling while in school ranging from selling phonics teaching aids I designed for nursery and primary pupils, writing exams for persons(this was very risky), and many other side hustles I can't remember now. I had enough to fend for myself and even help others.
But my major break was when a cousin of mine gifted me 4 million naira december last year after my call to bar. God has really been owesome in my life. To Him be all the glory.

Bro I remember this ur story. U once shared how ur cousin nd his fiancee squatted with u while in school nd how they later surprised u when the going got better 4 them.

Jesus name Christ, the miracle worker wants to heal you right now. Kneel down on your kneels and cry out to the Lord for mercy. Ask God to forgive you of your sins.
Once you are done with that, stand up and with your two hands to heaven shout for 7times
God of Elijah perfect my hearing in the name of Jesus. Immediately after the 7th time, be still, eyes closed and two hands sill up. Stay that way for 5minutes.
Then see the wonder working power of God.
Please after you have received your healing kneel down, praise and give the king of Kings thanks.
Thank you Jesus

Olayinka8793:
Well, I didn't only grew up poor, I also grew up disabled after suffering permanent hearing loss since I was a kid in primary school.
As painful as that hearing loss was, it was what later pushed me to go and learn a trade in barbing since my hearing loss will be a great hindrance to my pursuit of higher education as there is no way I could have survived in conventional universities even though I managed to survived conventional high school up to SS2, and the other obvious choice which is a university for the deafs is not an option either as I never learned sign language.
long story short, I am a boss barber now with my own shop and two obedient apprentice.
By God's grace l am completely totally independent and out of poverty.
Doesn't sound so much like a big deal but when l count the number of able bodied people l know who are not doing well as l am and will give anything just to be in my position, and the relations and friends l have been able to assist whenever l could, l can not but say a big thank you to God.

Man!!! It was rough!!!

Grew up in a ghetto in Lagos where we were oppressed by OPC everyday. There were public lynching and ethnic cleansing conducted by the OPC.

Then we were oppressed by the police. After OPC have had their way and killed whom they pleased, the police would extort us and beat us severely if you dared to oppose

Then there were the thieves that would raid every house in the ghetto. Robbing and raping and killing. Fortunately, we were never attacked by any of those but I saw it so many times that I got desensitized to the deaths and charred bodies that lined up the street everyday.

It wasn’t funny!

Did you grow up in Ajegunle? I know OPC harassed Ijaws in their early days in Lagos. That's what you get when you ask illiterates to handle stuff

Don't give up okay Change tactics.

See, in this journey of liberating yourself and family from the virus called poverty, you can apply several tactics, but don't ever venture into money ritual, robbery or anything diabolic, it backfires but you can play some smartness to help yourself.

If you are a lady you can liberate yourself through marriage to a guy doing well by packaging yourself well, its not a crime even though we try to condemn it.

Even if you are a guy you can also apply same tactics but don't target Nigerian ladies, target white ladies and be ready to compromise- don't go looking for sweet sixteen white girl to marry, nope, they will compound your problem and frustration, just close eye and go for the older, maybe obese white ladies who are doing well financially or who are citizens of their countries and marry so they can help you relocate out of Nigeria where you can start working and earning good income to improve your financial life.

Set a plan. Compromise where necessary and don't ever give up or confess negative. Believe me, you can achieve anything.

See, right from school I kept telling my friends I want to have a company and be a CEO and they will be laughing but this has always been my sole desire and even when I was unemployed, underemployed and in fact miserable, I kept imagining how it would be if I own a company, I kept fantasizing about it and kept thinking of ways to start a company.

I am not joking, the law of attraction works. Apply the law of attraction in your life and you will get your heart desires in life.

Even when things were difficult for me I never believed I would be poor. I kept laughing that how can I end up poor, that its not possible na. Sometimes I will be laughing while alone and its cos I was imagining myself being poor and my mind will tell me it cannot happen and I will start laughing.

You won't die like this. You won't be poor. So pickup yourself and restrategize pls okay

Nnamdi Azikiwe first Nigeria's President wanted to commit suicide because of life frustration while young but he ended up as Nigeria's first President.

Many successful people you see today were once suicidal due to life frustration

The strategy is to always try and live below your means.

Nothing de to live for for this world... We are all gonna die anyways... It's just a matter of time..

Your story is quite touching. If I may ask you, who do you blame for your predicament? God, Parents, Government, yourself or other people I do not mention here? ''Long story short... My life is meaninglessness.. I'm just clowning Online to kill depression..

I just diagnosed your predicament from your statement. You have attracted plenty of troubles in your life through your unguarded speech.
''The secret of advancement in life lies in the ability to say the right king of words''. ( E.W KEYON). Thou are snared with the words of thy mouth, thou are taken with the word of thy mouth( Proverbs 6: 2). your utterances are just where you have been missing it. It does not matter what you believe, things go awry for people who charge their atmosphere with negative utterances. WORDS are very powerful my sister. regardless of any negative circumstances, always confess positive things over your situation. As regards to your belief in God, I am sorry to say you do not know the God you have accepted. As a new believer in Christ, the first step believers should take after believing in Christ Jesus is to give themselves over to the absolute study of God's word prayerfully and meditatively instead of running from one prayer ground to another. Second thing is to invest in Christian literature that will pop open your eyes to spiritual truth. My sister, you have a great destiny, the devil can't offer you anything but to destroy you at the end. God Almighty will turn your fortune if you can rededicate your life to Jesus. Nigeria's economy is affecting everyone, but trust God, He'll always come to your aid if you trust him. Come back to Jesus, He is waiting for you.

Summary of me Escaping Poverty: God, Determination, Perseverance, Service and Purpose.

1. You need to understand the meaning of Poverty before you can find a solution to it. Poverty is simply accumulation of needs

2. You need a reason to hate Poverty inorder to escape it. Am from a broken home, I saw what Poverty did to my mother despite being a fervent Christian. So I determined to break the cycle.

3. As a teenager, I hawked everything "hawkable" it helped me to build resilience and hardworking skills.
My first job after secondary school was #1000 as a teacher in year 2000 (too small right?) There is dignity in labour.

4. Select your friends: Some don't know they are poor, so stay away from such. Sacrifice youthful lust and exuberance, face your destiny. Older people make better friends, you will learn from their stories. Pray for Helpers of destiny.

5. Fight poverty physically and spiritually: I became born again in 2003. 50% of my poverty and problem was solved with that singular act. God showed me my future so I endured and persevered with my then challenges.

6. You may forget about Marriage or relationship when you are poor. It will save you from stress and keep you focus. After significant progress on your plan then marry or start relationship.

7. Get used to fasting and crying to God and crying for yourself.

8. Set goals and milestones for yourself. It helps you to know when you arrive at your destination. List what you intend to achieve at various age and stick with it. God works with plan and expectations. The Bible says the expectation of the righteous shall not be cut short.

9. Render service to people/serve people without thinking of reward. Value prayer over money or reward while serving people. Their goodwill and recommendations will give you what you need. This is very important.

In conclusion, you can do it because I did it with God on your side. Your children and your world will thank you for it. I live in diaspora and a regular intercontinental flyer.

SirBobiGentle:
My story is quite different because I will appreciate my father as a man any day any time. I remember growing up in a one room boys quarter with my parents and two siblings. Life was so tough and we use to help mum sell bonce and puff puff. Dad was a taxi driver but we didn't really know what he was doing then because we were quite young.

One thing about my dad was that he was determined and I remember my sister entering secondary school in one public school but before I got to enter secondary school, dad had a job that started paying something a little nice. We moved from the boys quarter to a one bedroom house that erosion nearly carried us one night. He put me in a private secondary school and transferred my sister to same private secondary school. My younger brother later joined us and things were beginning to change a little.

My dad didn't depend on that job because he kept pushing for something better till he struck a jackpot. He got employed in one of the biggest oil companies in Nigeria and then boom, the whole story started changing.

He bought our first house, bought cars, spoilt us with money. We got practically everything we wanted in life. I entered university first year with my own ride. He bought all of us rides and messed us up with whatever we needed. We go overseas for holidays and I saw the difference between poverty and riches.

He bought houses and also built a befitting palace to suit his status, set all of us up after graduation and we are all doing fine. He is retired now and still enjoying his pension peaceful to the point that if we send him 100k each as a gift, he will be laughing at us that we don't have money and we are giving him chicken change lol.

Life without money is actually the real hell on earth. Heaven is right here on earth when you gat money.

I pray everyone makes it in life.
Best story.
Thank you for this.
I know your father must be a child of God

Thanks. I will give it a try when I get home. I am in the salon now with customers around.

After I saw how my dad suffered to raise the two of us I and my sibling till the company he was working with went down. We started living from one aunt house to uncles houses. I have been thrown out on four occasions, accused of stealing on many occasions, starved by family, disowned by my own mother who is in the abroad sending monies to different people in Nigeria and disregarding her son because I looked like my father. At 21 I moved to ibadan, stayed with a friend, dumped by my gf, Hustled to get my cert, did my Nysc, hustled more, bought a land at ibadan, bought my first car, bought another car, moved down to Lagos, rented a apartment.

Now I have a unisex salon, a boutique, a car listed on Bolt, and Presently working on roofing my project.

It’s not been easy. Not all women are mothers.

@bolded is true but most people won't understand until they have a bad mother. My neighbor is in the same shoes.

Did you grow up in Ajegunle? I know OPC harassed Ijaws in their early days in Lagos. That's what you get when you ask illiterates to handle stuff

Grew up in Ajangbadi....
they killed so many people it was crazy... I’ve seen so many people die painful deaths after pleading for their lives. It’s not something any child has to see but that was my reality growing up.
