we have shown you Ikwere and opobo people claiming Igbo.

Show us those that denounce Igbo.

This will make things more interesting.

It cannot be all about how u feel.

Lol!
One or two people claiming Igbo from there means nothing. You should be asking what their official bodies claim. See this:

"Head of Ikwerre Cultural Organisation, Worldwide, Chief Agbaru Ogbakor, who gave credence to this in a narration of the history of the place and its people said: “Ikwerre is one of the ethnic nationalities that make up the many Nation-States that were amalgamated by Lord Luggard in 1914 to form what we have today as Nigeria. They have their identifiable and distinct culture, tradition and language"

www.nationalnetworkonline.com/en/news/4873-ogbakor-ikwerre-celebrates-2019-celebriti

Ogbakor Ikwerre and her leaders consistently call Ikwerre an Ethnic nationality. If you don't get the point, or keep waiting for them to come out to tell you they are not Igbos, even when they (Ogbakor Ikwerre) had endorsed and launched many Ikwerre authors writing origin stories of Ikwerre, which proves they are indeed a confused Bini people whose ancestors adopted Igbo language and names, then the joke is on you.
Keep waiting.

If it is the bini thing, which actually refers to a place formerly called Idu, then Onitsha people are also involved.

The truth is this issue will be resolved by marriage with the Ikwere.

This is y, i am against the way igbo just marry anyhow and be saying Nigeria.

They are treating marriage the way they treat their investment, in areas that they will one day be asked to leave.

Let us start thinking home first and build our place first.

Our marriages should be targeted to unite our people. That is wat marriage are their for, to unite and continuation of your people culture and identity.

You don't unit with a people not one of you.
You as well ask Ndiigbo to unite with the rest of Nigeria. What's the difference between Ikwerre and the rest of Nigeria attitude towards the Igbo man?

But they also claim to be from Bini or Idu.

The point here, is we need to put our house in order.

Alot of this problem exist becos we allow it.

We need to be firm and resolute, and stake our claim to things that belong to us.

My experience too, they have a love hate relationship with Igbo people, mostly an envious one.
But if you see them outside rivers state, especially in the north or south west, they will begin calling any Igbo person they see "nwannem o". I find it two faced and laughable.

They are opportunists.
In Rivers state where they have numbers, they tell you straight to your face that they are not Igbos, and they show you standoffish attitudes.

In outside Rivers state where they lack in numbers, where they reason they could benefit by preying on the emotional sentiments of Igbos. They will suddenly claim to be Igbos and attach to the Igbo bodies in their location, for social security and other benefits.

It's not laughable. It's serious. We must baracade them and make sure they can at no point be Igbo. That's how we restore our pride and past glorly. Igbo ethnic group tag must not be something one can toy with as and when they like.

You know fully well these lots are not Igbos, but just opportunistic confused Bini people.
If you admit them into Igbo fold. Tomorrow when the Igbo are to benefit from something politically, Nigerians knowing that these lots have no real affinity to Igbo and does not truly share in our group agenda, would prefer to hand them Igbo slots, while cunningly telling us that they had given the slot to an Igbo man, these are like fifth columnists. They weaken us, and outsiders know it.

The earlier we purged them permanently from our system, the better for us as a group.

I don't really mind the story. Because despite the friction and all, you know that in the end, an average Onitsha man is a proud Igbo man.

We must sought out Igbo marriage arrangement.

Alot of our people are single becos we have no arrangement since after Biafra war that our grandfathers had.

We cannot marry ugly afonja and be calling ikwere our brothers.

Nwanne.
Leave marriage thing for now.
99% of Igbo men marry Igbo women.
Problem we have today is that because of Monogamy that Christianity introduced, we can't marry all our women, so the surplus Igbo women are being rushed like a gold rush, by other Nigerian groups.
Our women are beautiful and wife materials, you can't blame them.
The only way we can stop it is by: 1, increasing the living standard of the Igbo man in his homeland (SE) and 2, Reintroducing polygamy.

The first would need political reorientation and integration that would throw up credible leadership who would work on pan Igbo interests.
Safeguarding pan Igbo interests would involve cutting off the likes of Ikwerre and other opportunistic Igboid speaking but Bini in heart groups out there completely from the Igbo milleu, this way we can handle issue holistically and relate with them as mere neighbours without unnecessarily blinding sentiments.

Wat language is spoken in Bonny and Opobo?

The last time i checked it was Igbo.

The people are also Igbo that were left behind during the transatlantic slave trade.

Yeah Ijaws joined them on the island and they are mixed.

So I wouldn't place Bonny and Opobo as Ijaw.

I place dem as distinct group, on their own. Andoni are also another mixed group even with Akwa Ibom origin.

Port Harcourt is one local government and falls under Ikwere.

Let us be realistic with this divide.

Ahoada west is made-up of Engenni and Ekpeye.
Ekpeye own the whole of Ahoada East but share Ahoada West with Engenni.
You know Burna boy the musician is from Engenni. Engenni are Edoid speaking and have history of migration from Bini to back it. But are today politically aligned with the Ijaw ethnic nationality and proudly claim to be Ijaws. Their political and traditional leaders are all members of IYC and INC.

Let me tell you. Ijaw ethnic nationality is not really about shared language. The Andoni,Udekeme, Epie/Atissa, Ogbia people don't speak Ijoid languages, let alone Ijaw language, but they are proudly Ijaws and align politically with INC regional and national agenda. That's how it is.

Opobo and Bonny might be Igbo speaking, but they are also Ibani (Ijoid language) speaking, and most importantly, they are fully aligned with the INC (Ijaw National Council) ethnic agenda.

If you admit such people into Igbo gatherings, you are only introducing moles and fifth columnists , as their allegiance obviously lie towards Yenegoa and not Enugu.
Why would you even want to have such a people in our Igbo gathering. Do you seem not to understand what ethnic nationality/group politics is all about?

We don't need such people in our Igbo gatherings. I would rather admit an Ukelle man in Ebonyi who sees himself as Igbo and identify as such neverminding that he only speak Igbo as second language , or Igala man from Igbokaenyi in Anambra state whose allegiance is to Awka and not to Idaa, despite speaking Igbo as a second language, in an Igbo gathering, than have an Ijaw man from Opobo, or a Bini man from Ikwerre, despite both speaking corrupted versions of Igbo language as first language.

Loyalty and allegiance are vital in nationalism. Only few nations on earth are 100% ethnically homogeneous. What you need to form a successful country is an overwhelmingly dominant single group, and other smaller group whose allegiance is total and unreserved to the dominant group.
Simple.

I think we may be misunderstanding the NigerDelta union to be something cultural.

These people all speak different language but have subscribe to the Nigerdelta union.

They do live in a different region called SS, as opposed to Igbo SE.

I think it is time to call a spade a spade.

Do they speak Ijaw? If no, then they are not Ijaw.

This is the samething we are saying with the Ikwere.

Ethnicity is not a matter of choice but a matter of facts.

In Africa, your identity is derived from the language you speak.

It is the same the world over.

you cannot be speaking French and call yourself an English man.

How can somebody, who dont speak or undertsand Ijaw be called Ijaw?

or somebody who dont speak or understand Igbo be called Igbo?

It simply does not work like dat.

That defies logic and reason.

It is not always that black and white.
The Ukelle men in Effium, Ntezi and Okpoto in Ebonyi are all proud Igbos today, despite not speaking Igbo as their first language.
What do you have to say about this? I have one of them as my friend, and he carries Igbo matter on his head like gala. Always naturally feel he has to show more pro Igbo character, to be fully accepted as an Igbo.
Such people are real Igbos and are more important and useful for achieving Igbo agenda than an Ijaw man in Opobo /Bonny who speaks Igbo as first language, or a Bini man in a Rumu Ikwerre village, who speak a corrupted version of Igbo language as first language, don't you think so? Think about it more.

I don't see a reason why a people following the traditions and customs of the igbos, wearing their clothing and eating the same food will still claim that they are from Benin. Some say that they were colonized by the igbos. Foolish.
Now if you claim that you are from Benin then you should stop answering igbo names and stop wearing our clothings in your functions. Follow the traditions of the benins .
As for the fools who claim that they were colonized by the igbos, I would love to inform you that history has never recorded that the igbos colonized anybody. But if you still feel colonized, and forced, then you should please go back to your forgotten traditions. That food that you eat before you were colonized please go back and eat it. That language that you were speaking please go back and speak it ohhhhh. Don't speak igbo again please I am begging you all. Don't follow our traditions again ohhhhh. Go and look for those forgotten traditions . Ask your parents and elders for them. Please I beg you. GO AND LOOK FOR YOUR FORGOTTEN IDENTITY.

You feel this angry when you have not even lived in Rumu villages in PH where you will experience Ikwerre people Igbo hate first hand. I recently was there.
I have, and I can tell you it's a wake up call that deserves a deep reflection. It shook me from my inner being and changed me forever. My perspective would never remain same after that.
If you visit their facebook pages, you will faint too. All they discuss is the Igbo man, and in hateful manner.

Any Igbo claiming Ikwerre people needs a brain surgery. How can one be lying to himself? Ala ekwekwala ngwelle gbaa aji.

What you can do, is to make sure you deny any Ikwerre man trying to claim Igbo the right to do so.

I personally have decided that anytime an Ikwerre man is allowed to become a member of an Igbo group I'm part of, I would demand the Ikwerre man be removed, if the other Igbos refuse, I would walk out from such group and denounce my membership.

All of us can't be going mad at same time, at some point, some of us have to start leading the way to sanity until all of us see the light and do same.

An ethnic nationality is a group of people with a contiguous ancestral land, speak a a similar ancestral language and practice a similar ancestral culture, all of which are different from other ethnicities

In this regard, there is no difference between an Nsukka man from Enugu, an Ijekebe man like me from Anambra, an Ngwa man from Abia, an Oru man from Imo or an Ikwerre man from Anambra. They are all contiguous, they all speak dialects of the Igbo language as their ancestral language and they all practice a similar ancestral culture.

So who is Igbo and who is not? If the Ikwerre man Is not Igbo, then it means that ethnic nationality is based on choice, not facts. What it means is that the Ngwa man can decide tomorrow he is Yoruba and the Nsukka man can decide he is Hausa

If being Igbo is based on choice and not facts, the Ogbomoso man can decide he is Igbo.

Being Igbo or not cannot be based on choice, being Igbo is based on facts. The Ikwerre man can claim to be Chinese, but facts are what counts

Human beings decide their ethnic affiliations. Self-determination is the only fact that there is. Being Igbo is a choice presented to us by Europeans. Some decided to accept it. Some didn’t. That’s as simple as it goes.

it would be difficult to purge them imo, this is because there are so many of them who genuinely believe and identify with the Igbo cause, i was invited to an IPOB meeting once by a friend, and I was pleasantly shocked to see, not only ikwerre people, but calabar, and ijaw men and women.
It was very eye opening, I even got to realise Biafra did not even start from an Igbo man. (Still difficult to believe).
But like you said, they only identify with Igbo when it would benefit them, as soon as it's sharing time, they let you know they are not Igbos but ikwerre's, same thing with the ukwuani people in delta.

All these arguments are useless and trashy.

I find it so hard dealing with the past when the present states us at the face like Covid-19.

For Instance who is still talking about Ebola when Covid-19 is facing us....That's reality.

You deal with the present the way it. It is only emotionally wreck human being that clings so heavily to the past which makes him not to think about the future. Imagine some gnashing his teeth for his loss during ebola saga when covid is in his face.

Today, as it stands and in Nigeria.... Ikwerre is an ethnic group... rightly put as Ikwerre ethnic nationality same way Igbo, Hausas, ijaws are ethnic group and recognised in Nigeria.

So you have no option but to respect the stand and reality because there is nothing....I mean nothing you can do to change that... Ikwerre is an ethnic group and you must respect their decision on that.

All you can do is to treat them and hold them same way you regard hausa fulani because they are no different from them on ethnic settings.

Arguing forth and back won't change anything but a proper review of how you relate with them is the best issue and also determines your future engagement with them.

Today and till tomorrow, they remain a recognised ethnic group in Nigeria....and must respected same way as other ethnicities. No two ways about it.

You argue in accordance with prevailing laws and not emotionally wreck argument.

Ikwerre are Ikwerre and Ikwerre's are not Igbos...

it would be difficult to purge them imo, this is because there are so many of them who genuinely believe and identify with the Igbo cause, i was invited to an IPOB meeting once by a friend, and I was pleasantly shocked to see, not only ikwerre people, but calabar, and ijaw men and women.
It was very eye opening, I even got to realise Biafra did not even start from an Igbo man. (Still difficult to believe).

The task is as easy as ABC. The good ones amongst them would have to be sacrificed for the overwhelmingly bad majority of them.
That's how it will and should be.

Ndiigbo will have to make sacrifices, bitter ones, we would have to hurt feelings, step on toes and do other necessary things, to restore back our house in order.
It's a deed that must be done. The more we delay it, the longer it will take for our redemption to come. We have to start calling a spade a spade and not a farm tool.
