Are u saying their are some truths to wat the Ashanti man was saying?

Akan is the name of their ethnicity. There are truths such that there are some similar words in both languages. And also the language structure is very similar. But the similarities to the best of my knowledge end with the language. No much similarities in culture, for example they are matriarchal society.

Wow, i actually dismissed this and could not wait to leave, wen he was saying it.

This is deep, so it is not just the Ashanti, it is the Akan.

I also had one barber that said something about the back of Igbo people head look like the Ghanians, flat. He was from Bini or Edo.

You don't understand my point.

1) Different ethnic groups can (indeed do) coalesce into one bigger ethnic.

This was how Igbo, Yoruba, Nupe ,Fulani emerged in the first instance.

2) 400 years ago, there were no Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo or Ijaw ethnic groups as we know them today and in 400 years time, many tribes would have been assimilated into a larger pan ethnic one.

This was the same way the Biblical Amalekites, the Hittites and the Jebusites were absorbed into the emerging Israelites and the Amonites, Moabites, Edomites and the Ishmaelites all coalesced into the Arab pan ethnic group.

3) My post is NOT whether Nigeria is working or not.
It's NOT about whether we should continue as Nigeria or disintegrate.

#Personally, I am of the opinion that unity can NOT be enforced. Those who don't want to be part of Nigeria should be allowed to leave.

gidgiddy:

The sane Britain you are using as an example still has Scots, English, Welsh and Irish as its recognized indigenous ethnic nationalities

The same Britain you using as an example is made up of ethnic enclaves called Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland

The same Britain you are talking about gave Northern Ireland and Scotland referendum in 1971 and 2014 respectively

Nobody in Nigeria is going to abandon their ethnic nationalities for some super-ethnic group. For one thing, it cannot work. We are all different people. Are we going to also have a Super-religion to bring Muslims and Christians together? Are we also going to have a super-culture to bring all the cultures together? It is impossible

What we should do is what Britain did and give those who want a referendum a chance to choose between Nigeria and independence. Personally, I think that Nigeria is a disastrous British colonial experiment that has since failed woefully. That the British brought us all together does not mean we must all die together. Let us all come to the reality that Nigeria is unworkable. Let a referendum be held so that the people can decide if they want to continue with Nigeria or not. Thats even more important than the unity of Nigeria

Nwanne, I understand you are a Biafran war veteran and look at these issues from pre 1970 perspective.
Mana nwanne, things have since changed in these communities since after the war.

Etche and Omuma presently don't identify as Igbo, likewise Ekpeye, Opobo and Bonny.

When I was in Eleme, when I listened to them speak, I felt like there is Igbo somehow mixed in their language, Eben though I couldn't understand a thing.
I'm surprised about your Eleme assertion, linguists classify their language as Ogoni dialect, so I think they are originally Ogoni people who mixed with Igbos and Ijaws.

Are you sure about Ogbia? Their language is not related by any means to Ekpeye language. Unless you are talking about Ogbia being related to the Engenni who share Ahoada West LGA with Ekpeyes.

A lot have changed in the defunct Eastern region, and after 50years of living in the past, I personally feel it's time Ndiigbo embraced the current reality and cut ties with those groups who no longer wish to identify with us. We cut the ties and make sure no one from those groups can at any point or instance be allowed to identify as Igbo.
Then we relate with them like we relate with the rest of Nigeria.

What do you think, nnekwu mmadu?

Nwannem, there is nothing Igbo in Ogoni language. It is good to know you "Felt like there is Igbo somehow mixed in their language" while you stayed Eleme. I guess people whose names are Nkechi, Nwosu, Odungwere, Nwogu, Okparaji etc cannot be identified as Ogoni.

Wen was the last time Igbo acknowledge Bonny and Opobo as Igbo speaking people and invited them to Ohanaeze Ndiigbo?

Did u invite them and they turn you down?

The problem is Igbo expect everything on a platter of gold and shying away from contending with those who contend with them.

U have to give consideration to other opinions here that are slightly advocating for another approach to that which u propose.

There was one Chief Obomanu from Bonny (Ubani) who told every ear willing to listen that he was Igbo. Anybody who waited to be invited by Ohanaeze so as to become Igbo is ancestrally not an Igbo person. They have make it a bold step to join an organization which represents their ancestral foothold in the shithole called Nigeria. If I remembered correctly, the founding fathers of Ohanaeze include an Ikwerre man and Omoku dude whom I knew from childhood.

Armaggedon:
You should know there is a tacit policy among Igbo neigbours that that makes Igbo denial a pre requisite for fair and peaceful coexistence with them. These our neigbours love everything about Igbo but they hate the unique sense of "exclusivism" and unity which comes with the Igbo identity. This makes it impossible for them to relate with Igbos as equals except they put their immediate Igbo neighbours under pressure to disconnect from the Igbo fold(Igbophobia). This is why urhobo is more comfortable if Ikaman says He is not Igbo, Ijaw and ogoni feel threatened when any ikwerre person says he is Igbo. For a British backed Fulani government that wants to fully control the resources of the area, this attitude of the minority present a perfect opportunity. They have structured states in south south in such a way that will encourage this Igbophobia, making it even more difficult for an Igbo in those places to identify as one. imagine Edwin Clark telling odili he is from Anambra and not from rivers and can't take south south slot but same Clark, with saro wiwa, encouraged Ikwere to disconnect from the Igbo fold and join rivers state. I guess wike is slowly realizing that.

As for your. Onitsha claims, we go by your definition then I'll not be wrong to say you're confused. Onitsha represent as you said cos they are in Anambra. A lot of Onitsha people also say nwa onyigbo, except they have changed, they won't behave differently if they found themselves in ikwerre position in 1967, a lot of oguta people too. Generally people who are considered lazy will have this inferiority complex. They exhibit resentment towards more competitive people and wouldn't mind denying them when given the opportunity. But then, if you exclude industrious people in your land, it won't develop. The reason they were able to take economic control of your land is the same reason you won't succeed if you chase them from your land. The only way out is work hard and develop your land or leave more gifted entrepreneurs to operate in peace.

My point is inferiority already exists among our neighbours, British backed Fulani regime exploited it by creating political structures which encouraged it, thereby dividing the entire region for political gain- an action no one in the area benefit from.

The only way to unite our people is to dismantle the Fulani political structure in the eastern region, create a better organized one as KANU propose.

Ranting against SS Igbo's as you're doing will do you no good. You'll end up cutting you nose just to spite your face.

You have excellently captured the conflict of the ongoing debate in a nutshell. The Igbo phobia seen in southern Nigeria was planted by the British colonial masters. It was even extended to southern Cameroon. When NDC and COR were in vogue, the so-called minorities did tell anyone that they were losing election to fellow village folks and not to Igbo.

Excuse me sir,

Does it necessarily mean they hate Igbos by simply chosing to identify as a separate ethnic group?

Examples of the type of Igbo-Ikwerre relationship occur all over the world. It doesn't necessarily mean hatred.
E.g

Yoruba-Itshekiri

Spannish- Portuguese

Ngizim-Bade (Yobe State)

Urhobo-Isoko

Kanuri- Manga

There is definitely hatred there. Let us not kid ourselves. Even I have had my own encounters years back with Ikwerre treating me with vitriol, even though they came from the Obio stock and were aware of Obio's Ngwa affinity. I can tell you, Ikwerre are generally aggressive when anything "Igbo" surfaces.

It is not always that black and white.
The Ukelle men in Effium, Ntezi and Okpoto in Ebonyi are all proud Igbos today, despite not speaking Igbo as their first language.
What do you have to say about this? I have one of them as my friend, and he carries Igbo matter on his head like gala. Always naturally feel he has to show more pro Igbo character, to be fully accepted as an Igbo.
Such people are real Igbos and are more important and useful for achieving Igbo agenda than an Ijaw man in Opobo /Bonny who speaks Igbo as first language, or a Bini man in a Rumu Ikwerre village, who speak a corrupted version of Igbo language as first language, don't you think so? Think about it more.

Your exam with Ebonyi people is wrong, because they speak a variation or a dialect of Igbo. You can not honestly say that they don't speak Igbo.

Unlike Ikwerre man whose father, grandfather, and great grandfather spoke Igbo, other ethnic minorities in the former eastern Nigeria might have spoken Igbo as a condition of their citizenship of belonging to the region, the same way many minorities of the north spoke Hausa.

However, they always have a mother tongue spoken by their grandparents before the creation of the region's.

So, when revisionists weave the baseless argument that language is not a major defining qualification for a tribe, educated people know better.

Ikwerre man whose forebears spoke Igbo can't compare his lineage with say an Ijaw or Efik man whose parents spoke Igbo as a member of eastern Nigeria.

Are we any better, than the deniers if we do so? no!

This is not true at all. Prior to the war, most people were indifferent about the "Igbo" tag. It was primarily only literature writers, linguists, academics and the devout Christians who were mostly involved with using the term to within their circles. The war drew a concrete line in the sand and forced people to choose sides. We are living that consequence right now. You are either one side or the other. That is what happened. There's no such thing as "deniers" when it comes to this.

You are still making the same mistake.

1) You can NOT determine who is an Igbo and who shouldn't be Igbo.

Igbos are those who accept to be Igbos (irregardless of their ancestries or historical extistence).

Non-Igbos are those who refuse to embrace the Igbo tag.

Every group decide where they want to belong.

2) Ethnic groups are NOT constant, they change with TIME.

Yorubas, Hausa and Igbos as we know them today are created by the BRITISH colonial Masters who categorized tribes/clan that they (the British) think are similar in ancestries, culture or already under common political authorities /influence (e.g The Oyo Empire and the Sokoto Caliphate).

Any group that like the category can stay and stick to it. Those who aren't comfortable with it can opt out.

Simple and straightforward. This is the reality here.

There's nothing like "indifferent " to the question of being Igbo or not. Before the war:
Ogoni people identified themselves as Ogoni, though they spoke Igbo.
Ijaw people, the same.
Efik people the same.

Ikwerre people who still have relatives in many Igbo towns, identified as Igbos before the war, simply began to deny, equivocate, and then purposefully began to confuse their younger ones about their origin, because Igbos lost the war, and the benefits of identifying as non Igbo suddenly outweighed the reverse. Even Ijaw people know that Ikwerres are simply playing a game.

Igbo b'Igbo is really what matters, not the maddening unreliable crowd out there.

We are now choosing to actively draw a line and pick one side or the other (nonsensically). Origin has nothing to do with what side was picked, and (listen well), ORIGIN DOES NOT MATTER. Sentiment and self-determination is really what matters here and that is what won out in the end. I do understand sentiment, self-determination, and even self preservation. You don't have to do it by distorting history--- that's cheap, deceitful, and outrageously wrong!

You can blame the British for caving PH, and Ikwerre people under Owerri province, but you shouldn't blame anybody for making 1900 to 1960 Ikwerres declare themselves Igbos in various easily traceable documents all over the eastern region.

Ikwerre ethnic propaganda, like all historical accounts of betrayal and sabotage show that Ikwerre woke up after the war to change their ethnicity to Bini, as a way to regain lands previously sold to Igbos in PH, steal Igbo properties as abandoned property, and look good in the eyes of Igbo oppressors.

That's ok, that's self preservation, but how long will psuedo educated Elechis, and Orijis if this World advance untenable theory to justify their sabotage of Igbos during and after the war?

Just like Ikwerre people have a need for self determination, Igbos too have a need to focus on those who are Igbos, want to be Igbos, and proud to be Igbo! That's why Igbo b'Igbo is what matters.

When things change again, and Ikwerre people produce yet another theory of their ethnicity, Igbos who are Igbos will still be watching them.

It is one thing if you find what they call stragglers; random, sporadic examples of what you are looking for. These random, sporadic examples of Ikwerre who attend your "unity meetings" are stragglers. Believe in your stragglers, but know this. It is one think to be pleasantly surprised by stragglers, and it is another to act as though said stragglers are representative of your target population. The latter is foolhardy. That is the only thing Pazienza and I are saying.

I will now add my own on top of that.

It is an utter waste of time and resources to attempt to conscript an entire population who want nothing to do with you.

It is not an utter waste of time...and for one it is my time not yours.
Those 'stragglers' have done more than you through arts, music, books and politics to put Igbo (not ikwere) on the map. You on the other hand have done more than them to fragment Igbo and have done nothing to put Igbo on any map. The only time I ever see this your moniker on nairaland is on these types of topics. Why?

You see why I and many igbos will take our chances with those 'stragglers' more than with you?

I say again, the history of every nation on earth is the history of forcing unwilling people to come together. And that includes even very tiny island nations! Many nations formed like that a few centuries ago have all gone to become very successful and proud nations.

We have dreams of a nation for Igbo speakers...we will keep pushing that dream. You and pazienza are not doing anything new by saying ikwere are not igbo. That is already the current status quo...it is us who are pushing into new territory, converting ikwere people one 'straggler' after the other

You are not versed in Ikwerre history so I will not go back and forth with you on the [de]merits of their position. The ultimate thing I need you to understand is this: Upon all the talk that you Igbo people have been doing. Upon all the shouting that you Igbo people have been shouting. Upon all the arguments you Igbo people have been making. Upon all the mgbali you people gbalila, we now live in a reality where Ikwerre undeniably distinct. Whatever lies they tell is ultimately unimportant. They could even start telling the obvious truth now, but it would make no difference. Ikwerre succeeded in not having its identity submerged and stifled within the umbrella of "Igbo".

Any argument, any statement, and plea that provided on the basis of origin, reauthored oral traditions and name changes means absolutely nothing in the face of one simple reality. The Ikwerre succeeded. The fact that we are even having this conversation now is evidence of such success. This conversation is AFTER THE FACT, proving the nigh futility of anything Igbo nationalists have to say.

I too believe that you do not have to reauthor history for the sake of self-determination [ana m ekwuru ụnụ, ndị "Igbo bụ Otu"]. However, at this point right now, we are clearly discussing something that has already happened. The how's and the why's are not as important as the reality of what faces us now, being that Ikwerre succeeded, and that is really all that matters.

You do not know me. So don't presume anything about what I have and have not done.

Now, with that out of the way, I will tell you this. Consider my words and Pazienza's words as just simple advice. Heed them or don't. It is up to you. After all, a na-ekwu sị "biri ka m biri". I believe your dreams are foolhardy and an ultimate waste, but in the end, your chi will decide with you whether or not you wasted your time. Though, I believe your time could be better spent on other things, if your sole purpose is simply to provide more contributions to arts, music, etc., rather than depending on imports from a community that doesn't even want you. That's all. Carry on with your dream.

exactly I don't know you...but I know Duncan mighty, Monalisa Chinda, etc...they are proud of their igbo heritage.

I have not wasted my time anymore than you and pazienza have. I have not been involved in these arguments as much as both of you. I met both your Monikas in threads arguing this! Sad!

You waste your time trying to reinforce an already existing status quo that doesn't favour you or your ethnicity! Sad sad! And unintelligent even! You are mad that an Ikwere man insulted you and called you a backward Ibo! Lol! Now you are emotional and have sworn that you will spend your time on nairaland 'advicing' Igbos to flee from ikwere...lol. do you know how many whites died trying to create Canada, Americas and Australia? You think your emotions create nations? You think your biri Ka mbiri attitude create nations?

Now listen to my own advice, don't spend your time reinforcing an existing status quo, that is what will be a waste of your time... because for one that status quo has already been created...if you really want to use your time well, create something new! For now ikwere are not igbo...but we say ikwere are igbos... chikina it will pain a few people, that's part of what we intend to achieve
