They have been dropping the Igbo tag since colonial times.


1) One Hon Orji who was elected to represent an Ikwerre constituency in the Easter Regional House of Assembly caused a drama in 1955 when he rejected the tag 'Ikwerre-Igbo' and stated that the two are different groups.

2) In 1959, the Ikwerres participated in the sittings of and even submitted a memorandum to the Willinks Commision set up by the departing British colonial master to assuage the fears of ethnic minorities if Nigeria should become independent by 1960.

They regarded themselves as different from Igbos but as a separate (minority) ethnic groups.

3) The Ikwerres were part of the Calabar-Ogoja-Rivers (COR) Movement, a political group agitating for a separate region to be created out of the defunct Eastern Region , specifically for the non-Igbo groups in the Eastern Region.

4) The 1963 declaration of the Ogbakor Ikwerre Conversation declared that Ikwerres are a distinct ethnic group.
