Excuse me sir, Does it necessarily mean they hate Igbos by simply chosing to identify as a separate ethnic group? Examples of the type of Igbo-Ikwerre relationship occur all over the world. It doesn't necessarily mean hatred. E.g Yoruba-Itshekiri Spannish- Portuguese Ngizim-Bade (Yobe State) Urhobo-Isoko Kanuri- Manga pazienza: 4 Likes |

There is no need for the insult. 1) Ethnic groups are for identications. 2) We can all dissolve into one super-ethnic group- Nigerians. It's not compulsory that we must retain the name, we can chose any name we like (e.g Wazobia). 3) Today, the Anglos, Saxons,Vandals, Franks, Romans and Celts in the British Isles have dissolved and re-emerged simply as The British people. gidgiddy: 1 Like |

Barriers between different tribes in Nigeria are gradually fizzling out through trades and marriages. Many Igbos, Efiks, Hausa, Ijaws in Lagos, Ibadan, Kano, Abuja, Akure, Yola have married into their host communities and their descendants will be less tribalistic. hammer0: 2 Likes |

Excuse me sir, Ethnic group is SELF IDENTITY and it's largely by choice. There are many people who now accept the Hausa ethnic tag but were not originally Hausas. The same goes for Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups. They were classifications done by the British colonial Masters to group tribes/clans which the BRITISH considered similar as one ethnic group. Those who accept these tags (e.g the Ngwa, AroChukwus, Nzam) and remain loyal to the group are counted as parts of the groups but those who want to opt out are not necessarily bad but different people (e.g Isoko, Itshekiri, Ikwerres etc) I have met some people who speak Yoruba fluently, eat Yoruba food and practice Yoruba culture, who I also assumed to be Yorubas but once told they are not Yoruba but independent minority groups in Northern parts of Kwara and some parts of Edo State. hammer0: 1 Like |

oyatz: They are not exactly the same. There was never a time Itsekiri identified as Yoruba in the past, they have always been a distinct ethnic group. Likewise Urhobo and Isoko. A better illustration would have been Ijebu -Yorubas, Urhobo-Okpe, Idoma-Igede. And no! The average Ikwerre man exhibit a deep seated loathe and hostility towards the Igbo, yet they want to be Igbo when it's expedient, that has to stop. Everyone has to bear their father's surname. Every single Ikwerre has to be Ikwerre and remain Ikwerre forever, at no point should they be admitted into Igbo gatherings as Igbos or allowed to claim to be Igbos in public, such claims should be met with severe warnings and hostility from Ndiigbo to such Ikwerre person or group. That's how we restore sanity. Make everyone dey their dey. 2 Likes |

Dedetwo: Nwanne, I understand you are a Biafran war veteran and look at these issues from pre 1970 perspective. Mana nwanne, things have since changed in these communities since after the war. Etche and Omuma presently don't identify as Igbo, likewise Ekpeye, Opobo and Bonny. When I was in Eleme, when I listened to them speak, I felt like there is Igbo somehow mixed in their language, Eben though I couldn't understand a thing. I'm surprised about your Eleme assertion, linguists classify their language as Ogoni dialect, so I think they are originally Ogoni people who mixed with Igbos and Ijaws. Are you sure about Ogbia? Their language is not related by any means to Ekpeye language. Unless you are talking about Ogbia being related to the Engenni who share Ahoada West LGA with Ekpeyes. A lot have changed in the defunct Eastern region, and after 50years of living in the past, I personally feel it's time Ndiigbo embraced the current reality and cut ties with those groups who no longer wish to identify with us. We cut the ties and make sure no one from those groups can at any point or instance be allowed to identify as Igbo. Then we relate with them like we relate with the rest of Nigeria. What do you think, nnekwu mmadu? 2 Likes |

pazienza: Defeatist attitude! Wen was the last time Igbo acknowledge Bonny and Opobo as Igbo speaking people and invited them to Ohanaeze Ndiigbo? Did u invite them and they turn you down? The problem is Igbo expect everything on a platter of gold and shying away from contending with those who contend with them. U have to give consideration to other opinions here that are slightly advocating for another approach to that which u propose. 1 Like |

pazienza:You should know there is a tacit policy among Igbo neigbours that that makes Igbo denial a pre requisite for fair and peaceful coexistence with them. These our neigbours love everything about Igbo but they hate the unique sense of "exclusivism" and unity which comes with the Igbo identity. This makes it impossible for them to relate with Igbos as equals except they put their immediate Igbo neighbours under pressure to disconnect from the Igbo fold(Igbophobia). This is why urhobo is more comfortable if Ikaman says He is not Igbo, Ijaw and ogoni feel threatened when any ikwerre person says he is Igbo. For a British backed Fulani government that wants to fully control the resources of the area, this attitude of the minority present a perfect opportunity. They have structured states in south south in such a way that will encourage this Igbophobia, making it even more difficult for an Igbo in those places to identify as one. imagine Edwin Clark telling odili he is from Anambra and not from rivers and can't take south south slot but same Clark, with saro wiwa, encouraged Ikwere to disconnect from the Igbo fold and join rivers state. I guess wike is slowly realizing that. As for your. Onitsha claims, we go by your definition then I'll not be wrong to say you're confused. Onitsha represent as you said cos they are in Anambra. A lot of Onitsha people also say nwa onyigbo, except they have changed, they won't behave differently if they found themselves in ikwerre position in 1967, a lot of oguta people too. Generally people who are considered lazy will have this inferiority complex. They exhibit resentment towards more competitive people and wouldn't mind denying them when given the opportunity. But then, if you exclude industrious people in your land, it won't develop. The reason they were able to take economic control of your land is the same reason you won't succeed if you chase them from your land. The only way out is work hard and develop your land or leave more gifted entrepreneurs to operate in peace. My point is inferiority already exists among our neighbours, British backed Fulani regime exploited it by creating political structures which encouraged it, thereby dividing the entire region for political gain- an action no one in the area benefit from. The only way to unite our people is to dismantle the Fulani political structure in the eastern region, create a better organized one as KANU propose. Ranting against SS Igbo's as you're doing will do you no good. You'll end up cutting you nose just to spite your face. 1 Like |

Armaggedon: I have seen this your narrative before, whereby you try to make the Igboids victims and their non Igbo neighbors the devils who are to be blamed for the Igboids Igbophobia. That perspective is old and a laughable one. There is simply no justification for their behavior. They are no victims like you would want to point out. The Ikwerre for instance have been the masters of Rivers state since 1999 and could be anything they like, but they chose to be Igbophobic. The Igbophobia of Ikwerre is exactly why Oyiigbo indigenes are currently considering breaking out from Igbo ethnic group, if only to see whether the Ikwerre controlled Rivers state government would stop neglecting the place and show them some love. On the bold. Keep deceiving yourself. Keeping living in the past, and see where that gets us. There is no Eastern region, it stopped existing since 50yrs ago, what we have now is SE, and if we can smell the coffee and get our priorities right, SE have all we need to succeed. Wike that named A public edifice in Rivers state after Gowon recently, while cajoling Ndiigbo indirectly during the ceremony, is not a Fulani man, he is an Ikwerre man. The average Ikwerre man sees the Fulani man as a messiah who saved them from the crutches of a big wolf devouring them, called the Igbo man-go figure. Don't embrace reality, keep living in fools paradise, keep making excuses for these lots, keep defending the indefensible, keep getting stuck in 1970, and see where that will get us in the future. 6 Likes |

Argue who is whatever but you need to stop revising history. Ikwerre were not instigators of the abandoned property saga. At the creation of Rivers in '67 Ikwerre were not a dominant force. The Ijoid groups held sway in the new Rivers State and with the support of federal forces snatched properties from their owners. Very lazy bunch. The Ijoid people lay the foundation for the thriving anti-Igbo sentiment in the state and to get a hold of power in the State the Igboid groups started playing the same game. 1 Like |

I think it's a huge error to always pull out that abandoned property card against the Ikwerre who couldn't have been actors in it. They lost the war too along with the rest of the Igbo. It's just today a lot of them are wallowing in ignorance and selfloathing. |
