My reply perfectly clarifies your confusion as to how imprisonments are more humane than lashing.
The analogy is quite flawed.
You will never find yourself in a situation where you'll have to choose between 24 months behind bars and 24 strokes of the cane.
Go and read my reply again. smiley
In your head it does. To me you are talking rubbish not worth reading once never mind again
Whether you may find yourself in such a situation is totally irrelevant.
The point is there is no objective test of humaneness that transcends all cultures. That flogging is objectionable or worse than imprisonment is a subjective judgment and there is no objective way of determining which is more humane

What then do you have to say about the massive protest against the government's lockdown just few days ago in the United States of America, there was a massive protest in Israel too, and just very recently in South Africa. You should be expecting massive protests in Lagos if Buhari should extend the lockdown. (I foresee so, I might be wrong).

WHY THE PROTEST?
.
The protest is justifiable for an economic reason....and this was after four weeks of lockdown and the government doesn't have the resources to fund the lockdown.
In your own case, there are some groups of Islamic scallywags who gathered them before the commencement of the lockdown to protest.....

No need to argue, expect massive unfortunate incident in the northern region

My point here is the different perspective to life issues. To some their protest is based on religious sentiments while to others it is based on the economy.

What both have in common is the simple fact which is their TRANSGRESSION.

As justifiable as it may seem, it won't change the resultant negative effect of the reality of the consequences of covid-19 because of their choice of transgression even though 'justifiable'.

This statement has outlived its use, it has now become stale. Is it the northerners that are ruling the south or how is north stopping south from developing? The same caliber of bad leaders we have in the north is the same we have in the south if not worse.

Good, but when will they abolish monarchy and move to democracy? Or when will they stop sawing people to bits in their embassy, or when will they stop jailing activist, or when will they stop blowing yemeni school bus and starving the yemeni people?
The crown Prince's has been decieving the word with the sham he calls reforms so that he will be accepted and supported by people all around the world. For close to five years now, he has only allowed women to drive, allowed women to enter stadiums and allowed abolished flogging. If he is serious about reforms, he would have released the thousands of political prisoners he jailed because they dared to criticise him. He would have stopped the war in yemen and he would have renounced monarchy and called for elections. He should stop being an hypocrite.
Laws are changed by Parliaments or popular referendums in the "civilised" countries he is pretending to emulate, not by a de facto leader. We will never know the public opinion of the saudi people but thousands of people who hates other people and see other peoples' cultures will come here to masturbate.

Very funny comments...

When you think that the west is a standard for comparison...

The facts are:

Countries with strict laws have fewer crimes and vice versa.

So when you spare the rod prepare to spoil the child.

You can walk in Saudi 247 with total calm and comfort. Absolutely no fear. Unlike the West.

But ever country has its good and bad points.

There is no instance where 24 lashes in an Islamic nation will be equivalent to 24 months behind bars in western societies.
The things people get flogged for in Islamic countries, are not considered crimes in western societies.
The crime that will land you behind bars for 24 months in US, will attract a longer jail term and harsher punishment in Saudi.
Whereas an offence that attracts you 24 lashes of cane in Saudi will not be considered a crime in US.
They are not of the same society, so every society should determine what is a crime or not in their society. It doesn't have to be in the western way. Cos if we are to go western way, that means we wouldn't criminalize same sex marriage again

Apply this same logic to the laws he is abolishing ? Are the laws working for the people of that country or not? Are they happy with the abolishing?
Are their own laws not more successful in curbing crimes than ours?
Why is he "reforming" the laws? Is it only to appease the western world or certain set of people?

You are making my argument broader than it is.
I only contradicted your equating 24 lashes to 24 months.
you're certainly correct, values are subjective.
But there are still absolutes.
Flogging someone for committing "adultery" is barbaric, there's nothing subjective about that.
Like having sex is a crime.
Flogging someone for criticizing the government or the states religion is barbaric, nothing subjective here.
And what's wrong with the 3 strike rule.
A triple violent felon offender is a serious unrepentant threat to the society and should be locked away forever.

ogododo:
Saudi Arabia has abolished flogging as a punishment, the supreme court announced, hailing the latest in a series of “human rights advances” made by the king and his powerful son.

Court-ordered floggings in Saudi Arabia — sometimes extending to hundreds of lashes — have long drawn condemnation from human rights groups.

But they say the headline legal reforms overseen by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have brought no let-up in the conservative Islamic kingdom’s crushing of dissent, including through the use of the death penalty.

The Saudi supreme court said the latest reform was intended to “bring the kingdom into line with international human rights norms against corporal punishment”.

Previously the courts could order the flogging of convicts found guilty of offences ranging from extramarital sex and breach of the peace to murder.

In the future, judges will have to choose between fines and/or jail sentences, or non-custodial alternatives like community service, the court said in a statement seen by AFP on Saturday.

The most high-profile instance of flogging in recent years was the case of Saudi blogger Raif Badawi who was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes in 2014 for “insulting” Islam.

He was awarded the European parliament’s Sakharov human rights prize the following year.

The abolition of corporal punishment in Saudi Arabia comes just days after the kingdom’s human rights record was again in the spotlight following news of the death from a stroke in custody of leading activist Abullah al-Hamid, 69.

Hamid was a founding member of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA) and was sentenced to 11 years in jail in March 2013, campaigners said.

He was convicted on multiple charges, including “breaking allegiance” to the Saudi ruler, “inciting disorder” and seeking to disrupt state security, Amnesty International said.

Criticism of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record has grown since King Salman named his son Prince Mohammed crown prince and heir to the throne in June 2017.

The October 2018 murder of vocal critic Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and the increased repression of dissidents at home have overshadowed the prince’s pledge to modernise the economy and society.

When will they abolish the kafala system that enslaves other races apart from Arabs? As far as I know Islam abolished slavery under the prophet Mohammad but the Arabs revived it under the transantlantic slave trade. Can you count how many housemaids, drivers, bricklayers, traders and other petty workers who have died under mysterious circumstances because of the kafal system.
