Yes you can still go ahead if your land is prepared and rainfall isn't yet much at your location

@Intendy, I was gonna ask same question too, our farmland is already prepared but rain hasn't fallen at our farm location (Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State) this month, the land is so dry; hence we can't plant watermelon until rain falls.

Can we still plant up till end of this month (April)?
Won't the consistent rainfall in July affect the proposed watermelon balls?

Early planted ones(feb-march) are almost dead if not dead. No one can currently predict the pattern of rainfall hence reason for irrigation. well one might plant after the rain you are expecting but what if it keeps raining regular (like every 2-3 day) or another short drought sets in when it starts flowering from 5-6 weeks.

Thanks @Intendy for your swift reply, God bless!

We'll wait and see if rain falls between now and 27th of this month, then we can plant watermelon seeds.

Hello @Intendy and @Ogaboss,

Rainfall this week has been scanty.

If peradventure, rain falls between now and first week of May, can I still risk planting the watermelon seeds? Since I am planting the 70 days maturity seeds, I think it would still escape heavy downpours which starts towards the end of July?

Your kind advice and guidance would be appreciated!

this might work out but I doubt it. it's getting late though and watermelon doesn't like too much water from fruiting stage. but like I said we can't accurately predict the weather. so this your planting will be a gamble

@Intendy, thanks for your prompt reply.

We have had almost zero rainfall in our farm area this month, if we had planted early in March, everything would have withered away.

However, the rain pattern this year is totally different and strange, hence, unpredictable.

So by mid to late July, the rain might not be heavy if this pattern continues.

In conclusion, if we have rain between now and next week Friday, we'll plant the watermelon and see what happens, hopefully it's gonna turn out well

please plan for 50-60 cm drip irrigation to use in your water melon farm even if it is 1000 meter's it's better than disturbing God for rain and playing betnaija with your hard-earned money,if you have drip that Feb/March crop would not have died you may be smiling to the banks now, never depend on rain for vegetable farming, even if you are planting in the middle of the rainy season have a backup plan for irrigation.

Yeah I have been monitoring this thread, and all I can figure out is getting into water melon business could be very expensive, what if there is no or less rain in a year? And I notice water melon is always available through out the year, so how do they do it during dry seasons?

planted mine early February, flowering this month of April. Has anyone had a problem of something eating the flowers early in the morning, am having this problem now, I suspect lizards might be the culprit
