Suspected COVID-19 patient runs to police for help

A suspected COVID-19 patient on Sunday afternoon ran to a police station for help after several attempts to reach the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) failed.

The woman, it was gathered, had tried to reach the COVID-19 toll-free lines since she started developing symptoms without success.

Desperate for survival, she was said to have walked from her residence to Adekunle Police Station, Yaba in Lagos where she stood outside and announced that she was having COVID-19.

According to a source, the woman acted responsibly and told everyone at the station to not come near here, explaining that coming to the station was the only option she had.

It was not funny. The woman said she walked down from her home to the station and that she was very mindful of avoiding contact with other people.

“As soon as she got to the station, she announced that she had COVID-19 and that people should stay away from her. She said she came to the station because she was frustrated from calling the NCDC and isolation centre without success.

“She then said her mind told her to come to the station so that the police can call the ambulance for her,” said a source.

It was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) contacted the isolation centre and an ambulance was sent to the station to carry the suspected patient.

The Nation learnt that the areas the woman touched and sat were also decontaminated by the team that came to carry the woman.

Police spokesman Bala Elkana could not be reached for comments at the time of the time.

Calls to his telephones were neither answered nor returned.

She acted sensibly and responsibly despite being in a dire situation.
I can only imagine the number of people that have tried to call NCDC without success and they continue to spread the disease or die in their homes.

It is not enough to turn to prayer, we have to act fast now.
After all, heaven help those who help themselves.
But first, we have to help ourselves before heaven will help us.

"She said she came to the station because she was frustrated from calling the NCDC and isolation centre without success."

They provided numbers to call and they were called. None of them responded. What a shame!
What if she had infected a lot of people within that area?

Nice move by the woman and kudos to the D.P.O and his team.
I know staying home is not easy but this is small camp are with what will happen should the health sector become overstretched.
We just tested about 10,000 out of over 2m and the health officers are already complaining of lack of test kits and someone say the lockdown should be lifted.
Well if you ask me, I will say lift the lockdown for 3days and announce that those who cannot afford to continue staying in their present location can move to where they will be able to afford their cost of leaving, e.g to the village or farm and after the 3days, enforce a strict lockdown like that of China or North Korea.

As far as NCDC remains a government controlled organization it will be a mess just like public schools and public offices.
Government establishment in Nigeria have been hijacked by nepotism and bureaucracy from the point of employment to retirement hence the lackadaisical attitude displayed by government workers.

So police station is now the place to visit if one shows COVID-19 symptoms as a result of incompetency of NCDC

I pray trigger hungry blood drunk policeman won't fire an innocent patients that run to the station for help.

It has become very clear that the NCDC and by extension Nigeria is not prepared to handle escalation in number of Covid-19 cases! undecided
