Why not use the money you donated to federal government to settle this people you’re dismissing. These folks worked hard to get all the customers you also took over from diamond and you’re now leaving them with nothing. NLC will not even say anything about this. Useless country. Some of the closures are understandable.

For example. There is an AccessBank next to diamond band inside unizik awka.

Also. There is AccessBank next to diamond bank in Regina awka.

There is also an AccessBank next to diamond bank in main market. Same in building materials ogidi.

I do not think that both branches will operating at the same time in the same location when it actually is one entity. That is a pure waste of running cost.



It is very understandable that half of the AccessBank branches be closed after the merger with diamond bank. No need for the waste.

And since those branches are closed, the staff will also be retrenched.

I think it's a mistake to close the Jos commercial centre branch, one will have to spend t.p to go to British American junction. Also the bukuru branch do they have another branch in Jos east ? The katako, unijos and club road is okay since it's close to the Jos commercial centre, but they've close even the commercial centre too. In only this Jos branches more than 100 well paid staff will loss their Jobs, which will indirectly affect other businesses too.

Acess is not on the same level as GTB . GTB is the most efficient bank in Nigeria. The only other bank in Nigeria that is on the same level as GTB is Zenith.

First Bank, Access, UBA all have bigger deposits and larger assets than GBT, but they are barely half as profitable as GTB or Zenith.

Bigger is not always better. An inefficient Access bank acquiring a struggling Diamond Bank always looked to me like a poor combination. It is difficult to see what Access thought it would gain from acquiring Diamond. Account holders and their deposits? But Access's inability to reach GTB or Zenith's level of efficiency and profitability was not down to lack of deposit or assets. Long before Access acquired Diamond, it had more assets, more deposit, and considerably more branches than GTB. Yet it has always struggled to make half the profit that a smaller GTB makes. Access needed to cut costs, address efficiency issues, improve asset utilisation etc. What it certainly did not need was an acquisition, particularly of a struggling relatively small bank.

A couple of weeks ago I heard Zenith Bank was going to acquire Union Bank and First Bank would acquire another bank - cant remember which exactly. Neither of these banks need to acquire any other bank right now. I cant see what Zenith seeks to gain from acquiring Union bank, but it can at least cope. The bank I feel sorry for is First Bank. This bank has been performing poorly for nearly a decade, it being burdened by large bad debts, and very high operational costs. First Bank needs to focus on sorting itself out over the next few years - acquiring another struggling banks is just asking for another decade of trouble.

Ah well.

Its like something is wrong with the top management of Access Bank. How can you donate billions of Naira to the FG to fight Covid. Yet you cannot pay your own workers salaries. Now you are closing down a lot of branches to cut cost. I don't get the sense in a donation that is very unnecessary.. That money could have been pumped to offset running costs rather than donating it.

Nigerian financial power house, Access Bank, annunciated the closure of more than 300 of its branches nationwide in a bid cut down running costs as a result of the outbreak of the deadly virus, COVID-19.

This move comes in the wake of a statement made by the group managing director/CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe who explained the reasons behind a planned mass retrenchment of its workforce, stating that some of its branches will be closed up until December of this year.

Herald NG earlier reported that Wigwe made this disclosure via video conferencing in a town hall meeting with the bank’s staff that later leaked on social media platforms.

Wigwe noted that those to be affected by the mass retrenchment are mostly outsourced staff and workers offering nonessential services. This group makes for about 75% of the Organisation’s staff strength in its branches nationwide.


“We probably don’t need as much security as required; even to the fact that we are not gonna have all our branches open between now and December. We don’t need all the tellers.” Wigwe said in the video.

“The second has to do with our professional cost. Now that is one that is very tricky and it is tricky because I do understand and appreciate that its gonna, you know, bring its own pain to staff.

“We basically have to make the adjustments the same way you sounded when we spoke 10 days ago with respect to basically cutting down cost.

“I will be the first to take the hit and I’m gonna take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as 40 percent. The rest we would have to cascade right through the institution. Everybody may have to make some adjustments of some sort.”

Industry observers have the notion that Wigwe’s retrenchment strategy and closure of its branches affects the most vulnerable of his employees. They also believe the move will be counter-productive for many families; especially the poor if the financial records of the bank truly show it has the capacity to cushion the effect of the pandemic.

At this stage of banking now in Nigeria. Any bank merging or acquiring any other bank , must lay off some staff, must also close some of its branches. It is as simple as ABC. Any other thing you are saying is just story.

Industry observers have the notion that Wigwe’s retrenchment strategy and closure of its branches affects the most vulnerable of his employees. They also believe the move will be counter-productive for many families; especially the poor if the financial records of the bank truly show it has the capacity to cushion the effect of the pandemic.

Hmmm just yesterday I was saying to a friend that I suspect they will close a diamond bank in my estate and I was right , looks they are closing diamond bank branches in areas where they already had Access branches , Methinks Herbert Wigwe is just using COVID crunch as an excuse to ditch Diamond bank staff he inherited in the acquisition

I suspected too when two months ago, they began an aggrressive drive to ensure that all customers (even those in rural areas) received their debit cards. Their tellers wouldn't even listen to an old woman stranded in their bank hall! Yea, it was that bad.

Nigerian financial power house, Access Bank, annunciated the closure of more than 300 of its branches nationwide in a bid cut down running costs as a result of the outbreak of the deadly virus, COVID-19.

This move comes in the wake of a statement made by the group managing director/CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe who explained the reasons behind a planned mass retrenchment of its workforce, stating that some of its branches will be closed up until December of this year.

Herald NG earlier reported that Wigwe made this disclosure via video conferencing in a town hall meeting with the bank’s staff that later leaked on social media platforms.

Wigwe noted that those to be affected by the mass retrenchment are mostly outsourced staff and workers offering nonessential services. This group makes for about 75% of the Organisation’s staff strength in its branches nationwide.


“We probably don’t need as much security as required; even to the fact that we are not gonna have all our branches open between now and December. We don’t need all the tellers.” Wigwe said in the video.

At this stage of banking now in Nigeria. Any bank merging or acquiring any other bank , must lay off some staff, must also close some of its branches. It is as simple as ABC. Any other thing you are saying is just story.

My point is, Access should not have acquired another bank when it did.

One of the key justifications for acquiring a competitor is to achieve scale (ie to combine 2 businesses in order to increase size). However, Access was already big enough. It did not need to acquire Diamond. Access was bigger than GTB at least in terms number of branches, number of customers, and total deposit. So, what did it need to increase in size for?

Also, when you are acquiring a competitor, it is usually because its business compliments yours. For example, if Diamond was relatively strong in parts of the country where Access was relatively weak, then bringing the two companies together would be logical, and in that case, the number of branches that would need to close would be relatively small.

However, if you have to close down not just some, but nearly all of the branches of the company you just acquired, it begs the question whether the acquisition was necessary.

Nigerian financial power house, Access Bank, annunciated the closure of more than 300 of its branches nationwide in a bid cut down running costs as a result of the outbreak of the deadly virus, COVID-19.

This move comes in the wake of a statement made by the group managing director/CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe who explained the reasons behind a planned mass retrenchment of its workforce, stating that some of its branches will be closed up until December of this year.

Herald NG earlier reported that Wigwe made this disclosure via video conferencing in a town hall meeting with the bank’s staff that later leaked on social media platforms.

Wigwe noted that those to be affected by the mass retrenchment are mostly outsourced staff and workers offering nonessential services. This group makes for about 75% of the Organisation’s staff strength in its branches nationwide.


“We probably don’t need as much security as required; even to the fact that we are not gonna have all our branches open between now and December. We don’t need all the tellers.” Wigwe said in the video.

“The second has to do with our professional cost. Now that is one that is very tricky and it is tricky because I do understand and appreciate that its gonna, you know, bring its own pain to staff.

“We basically have to make the adjustments the same way you sounded when we spoke 10 days ago with respect to basically cutting down cost.

“I will be the first to take the hit and I’m gonna take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as 40 percent. The rest we would have to cascade right through the institution. Everybody may have to make some adjustments of some sort.”

Industry observers have the notion that Wigwe’s retrenchment strategy and closure of its branches affects the most vulnerable of his employees. They also believe the move will be counter-productive for many families; especially the poor if the financial records of the bank truly show it has the capacity to cushion the effect of the pandemic.

I think the Access Bank CEO got it wrong ......

Recall that , few weeks ago, the same bank donated 1 Billion Naira to the Criminal Federal Government of Nigeria as a support to provide palliative materials for Nigerians due to the Covid 19 pandemic. ......and few days after , the same bank came out again to announce the retrenchment of their workforce as a way to cut down operational cost. .
