Nigerian banks are too fragile. They can hardly survive any downturn in the economy without massively laying off staff.

Some of these banks also bite more than they can chew. What Access bank is going through now reminds me of my little stint with BankPHB.

BankPHB acquired spring bank late 2008 in a very hostile manner. Billions of depositors funds was committed into the acquition. By March 2009, the bank was already distressed and laying off staff. The hostile nature of the takeover also made it impossible for the quick integration of the operations of the banks. There was also the effect of the global meltdown and crash of the stock exchange market that year.

By the Sanusi came in as CBN Governor around June, the bank was already a mess. He did not bother to romance the problem, he simply killed the bank and other banks that were then struggling to survive the global meltdown and crash of the stock exchange market by late 2009.

Hopefully, Access bank won’t go the way of BankPHB.

BankPHB didn't acquire Spring bank. Spring bank was acquired by Enterprise bank limited now Heritage bank

lol who told you this had any thing to do with corona virus this move is as a result of the merger as both diamond and access now share the same liabilities to maximise profit from their union and to streamline functions some branches have to go as we should know there are still diamond bank branches operation in the fore mentioned location as such those closures were necessary to stop duplication of services rendered and waste of manpower and resources. to save face access bank is just hiding under the auspices of corona virus. this decision is only to achieve one aim maximise profits and stop wastage's.

Gbam
U are absolutely right.

This Covid 19 situation was just the perfect time to do it.

Honestly , this can't be as a result of covid 19 ,it actually shows access bank has been in financial mess all this long but not revealed to the masses. The y are just pretending as if the covid 19 is the main reason for that.

Access Bank just used covid19 opportunity to finalize their plan. This has nothing to do with what is happening now. It has everything to do with the merger with diamond bank. They found the golden opportunity to close down most of their branches. It has been in their plan since the day they merge with diamond bank

This is very hostile to both the workers affected and the customers. Just see the number of branches to be closed down in Lagos. Will we have to walk far just to access an Access bank. There must be a rethink. Or a sinister plan to close all Diamonds acquired. You will surely lose customers.

The matter of acquisitions or mergers are gradual process thing. Most of the staff in both diamond bank and AccessBank knew that a day like this will come. I was a staff of AccessBank, I resigned and found my way out of naija immediately the merger talks began.

The merger consists of so many things. But assets and liabilities are involved. If they had started closing down branches of diamond bank and sacking them immediately the merger went down, Trust me, many customers would have pulled out from diamond bank in panic that they are closing down. And if that happens, automatically it brings about cash runs, so if all the customers of diamond bank pull out from the bank, what will be AccessBank banks gain of merging with them?

When eco bank swallowed oceanic, the same thing happened, when AccessBank swallowed inter, same thing.

What they will do is in each locations where there are diamond bank and AccessBank, they will check the bigger or better building and close down the other one.

I never expected them to closedown and sack the staff immediately the merger went down. It would have been disastrous to both of them.

Trust me. They lost so much money over the period they were running double branches concurrently in the same location.

Every business mans aim is to make money and not to in-cure losses.

That is a nice move that has been on the pipeline.they had planned all these months back, they have made their budgets for the next financial year and didn’t include those affected branches in that budgets. It is just a coincidence that it fell in this covid 19 times.

I have been following ur comments from page to page. If not for ur comments, I would have thought Covid 19 is the cause of all these. Thanks so much for enlighten me. So u even worked with Access Bank??. I can now see why u have so much informations at ur disposal. That's good. That's the bank am using currently.

God punish the management of this bank. Why give out billions to this criminal govt and then retrench your staff that have been there for u and contributed to the growth of the bank. What is the reason for giving out such money to govt when you know you can comfortably use it to mitigate the effect of this vovid 19 and sustain for staff? This is evil.

The cock has finally come home to roost. Makes sense though, most of the branches would be those belonging to the former Diamond Bank most of which are small branches. Pa Dozie's model was very lean and effective till hin pickin begin build gigantic branches upandan and I'm sure the family still owned the land on which those gigantic branches were built.

For example in Lekki Phase One, Access Bank already owned a very big branch on Admiralty road before the acquisition, while Diamond Bank had a gigantic branch on Admiralty Way itself, with the acquisition, it automatically reverted to Access Bank. It will be wasteful maintaining those two branches with proximity of less than 10 minutes away.

Then we have the numerous branches in VI. In this time and age, banks ought to operate lean with less branches but guess what, they need to quote the buildings as assets to make their books look good before investors.

How can your personnel cost be 79 billion naira... No wonder bank staff are always dying off due to the stress. undecided

No not at all. Big original Access bank that I know in V/I, Surulere and Ijesha are being shutdown. The effect of covid-19 will last for at least 6 months and the guy doesn't want to pay salaries during that period as well as branch running cost while maintaining profit of the company for shareholders. Guess how many shares he controls as a CEO that's where he personally makes his money and not the salary/allowance. It's quite sad!

[quote author=sarrki post=89116495]Nigerian financial power house, Access Bank, annunciated the closure of more than 300 of its branches nationwide in a bid cut down running costs as a result of the outbreak of the deadly virus, COVID-19.

This move comes in the wake of a statement made by the group managing director/CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe who explained the reasons behind a planned mass retrenchment of its workforce, stating that some of its branches will be closed up until December of this year.

Herald NG earlier reported that Wigwe made this disclosure via video conferencing in a town hall meeting with the bank’s staff that later leaked on social media platforms.

Wigwe noted that those to be affected by the mass retrenchment are mostly outsourced staff and workers offering nonessential services. This group makes for about 75% of the Organisation’s staff strength in its branches nationwide.

“We probably don’t need as much security as required; even to the fact that we are not gonna have all our branches open between now and December. We don’t need all the tellers.” Wigwe said in the video.

“The second has to do with our professional cost. Now that is one that is very tricky and it is tricky because I do understand and appreciate that its gonna, you know, bring its own pain to staff.

“We basically have to make the adjustments the same way you sounded when we spoke 10 days ago with respect to basically cutting down cost.

“I will be the first to take the hit and I’m gonna take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as 40 percent. The rest we would have to cascade right through the institution. Everybody may have to make some adjustments of some sort.”

Industry observers have the notion that Wigwe’s retrenchment strategy and closure of its branches affects the most vulnerable of his employees. They also believe the move will be counter-productive for many families; especially the poor if the financial records of the bank truly show it has the capacity to cushion the effect of the pandemic.

Lol something I have noticed 3 years ago.

GTBank is one of the worst banks in Nigeria

I stopped using the thieving and arrogant bank two years ago. They even refused to close my account down so I can cash out my remaining 2$ and 1.9€. Almost 1500 naira when converted...

I opened account with them because of the way Nigerians were hyping them. I find out they are just criminals and regular banks and forcing that yeye token device on customers. That thing can't even protect your account. All na hoax. Try doing foreign transaction with their stupid MasterCard and no token will be required and the system deduct your money sharply.

Since I port to unpopular bank, they even give me small interest sef upon the tiny fund I get for the bank.

Their visa debit card dollar no dey give me wahala. I fund it when I want to do online transaction

When I opened account with my new bank, I simply opt for email alerts & they don't charge me kobo for sms. What's the need for sms when I have access to my email and bank app 24/7...

Email is even more active than sms so long as you have a smart phone. Sms is good for those without internet access...

PS the yeye bank also program their atm machine to 10,000 maximum cash per transaction so that you keep paying #65 for the remaining transaction. Those years I was using them, they sometimes send up to to 25 sms alerts for just 1 transaction made.
