Exactly, you need to score A in at least 70% your courses from year 1 to 4 or 5 before making a first class.

That means you need to sleep with 70% of your lecturers from year 1 to 5. It doesn’t make sense.

Most students that sleep with lecturers do so not to fail a course or not have carry over, not not to make A.
Lol. How many lecturers do you have in your department?
In the course of a programme, one lecturer can take up to 7 courses.

Different story for different folks .
In as much as you're sure of your class of degree and competence, you'll pull through.
Here's a story of my roommate in university. He was from the poorest of the poor but didn't let that deter him while studying Chemistry .There were times i wished i have his brain even though we were not course mates but his brilliance, study habits and meticulousness rub off me, i wouldn't lie . He would go on to graduate with a (4.41CGPA ) in chemistry.
While waiting for NYSC call up letter, he took up a teaching job at a secondary school near his hometown of ilishan-remo, Ogun state and used the meagre pay to enrol for ICAN and kept at it throughout NYSC in Sokoto.
He shared how he applied for KPMG Tax Academy 5 months after youth service and asked me to do the same but for some circumstances beyond me at that time , i could not.
He went through the training school , passed and was offered a job in the tax dept of KPMG as an associate . Today, he's an Asst Tax Manager of a Consulting firm in Lagos with additional CITN qualification.
He knew nobody except for the information he got at the MSSN while in sokoto.
I am not disputing the blessings of networking but there are some who do not have access to this and are doing just fine in life .
pls, can you tell me how long the KPMG training lasted and how your friend scaled through the assessment? Thanks

My thoughts exactly.
Courses like Sociology, Metereology, Philosophy, Mass communication, Music, Anthropology, Arabic studies, Physiotherapy, Forestry, Botany ,Soil science ,theatre Arts, Veterinary medicine, Animal science, Estate management, Aquaculture, Biochemistry, Geography and regional planning, Engineering physics, insurance, Political science, and to a large extent business admin/management and some professional certifications like NIM, Institute of customer relations of Nigeria have outdated their usefulness except you make a very good grade and luck shines on you.

2005/2006 is far better than now boss.

Then companies visit Convocation to pick up first class graduates.

But Now, there is a risk of getting rejected as a GA even from the Dept U graduated from.

All the first class in my circle are doing well, except one that chose not to be materially inclined so opted to be an alfa.

From Shell to Chevron, they are there.

One of them was struggling to raise N17k school fees in our final year in 2005/2006. He now owns at least 3 houses, one in Lekki.

Let nobody deceive you that first class is a waste. Hustle for it, but make sure you can defend it.

Lecturing is not one of the jobs I was referring to pls. The guys I’m talking about earn at entry level what professors earn after 25 years of lecturing.

Then or now, I wont take up lecturing job.

That said, I agree the job market was better when we entered labour market (2008 - after NYSC).

Why are you answering him. Don't you know that jealousy make them talk that way. Even my stupid classmates would say I'm not brilliant, I'm just good at reading thats why I was the best graduating student. I was the youngest person in my class and also I did another 4years course alongside my bsc degree which I also graduated as one of the best. Some peoples brain is just too dull to understand what they are saying.
I regret ever being in my department with fools, non of them is actually more than average except one girl like that.
I wish I had the opportunity of being among good brains, and smart people. I can't even be friends with any of them since they think backward and those that are okay are full of jealousy or extremely extroverted, so I just packed well as I'm an introvert

If someone think I have empty brain after coming first, out of more than 1000students, and even being the youngest of them all, then that person must be out of his senses

Don't mind them.. Most people that talk down on first class students are usually the LAZY ones who failed beautifully after sleeping any how and wasting time in school, I knew most of them back then in school. One thing you can always take to the bank about any first class student apart from being brilliant is HARDWORK.....Recruiters will rush you as a first class with respect and they always like to give you an opportunity to defend your result, they just want to hear you talk... First class is a great asset anytime, anywhere, any day especially at the beginning of your career.

From a firsthand experience, first class in Nigeria universities (fed & state especially) isn't as straightforward as is often projected. There are lots of factors beyond one's control. Missing script, for one. Not only that, given what is being taught in most Nigerian universities, writing as someone who passed through this same system, I'm sorry to report that I can't hire myself to replicate the same obsolete, impractical and isolated knowledge that I spent five years pursuing. Businesses/employers at the very least want someone who can help them increase revenue, block wastages, solve problems, etc. Needless to mention that majority of our public institutions aren't equipping their products with these competencies.
During my days as an undergrad I paid 50:50 attention to study and skill and graduated with a 2/1 with eight years of experience in my area of expertise (totally unrelated to my course of study). Looking back, I wished I had paid my skills 75% and my studies 25%. This is because I'm not job-hunting; I'm doing what I love plus my skill and expertise is creating value, which means I'm earning fairly decently; best of all, I have job security.

Thats one of the mistake I made in my life and still regretting it till now. First class is a waste of time and thoughts. If you are connected, not an introvert, then you have a chance, if you are not, please I beg you, while in university, concentrate on things you can do that would bring you money and make you happy in life. Just make sure you don't go below second class upper.
Nigeria is a failed country.
I wish I did this when I was in the university, I was busy making sure I was doing well in academics, I also registered for a 4years Arabic course which I finished. I wish I knew my advisors were merely myopic, I wish I had concentrated my energy on learning TECH skills.
I wish I had used my school fees to purchase Tech equipment and learn the skills, some of us fall into the category of bad advice. I regret the day I saw my result and it was full of A's in 100level first semester, that was my motivation and every body started telling me I would made a first class up and down, and telling me not to relent. I wish I had relented, but I was stupid to keep pursuing nonsense
Hmm...

But why would you study Arabic course... cuz I don't understand oo

Didn't you see other courses like engineering, law or even medicine... Or was it a parent factor that made you do it... ?

Cuz I think that course is pretty useless in Nigeria ...even abroad sef...Wetin you want use am do undecided

It is not a matter of system.

Nobody will hand you job just because you had a first class.

You will be invited for tests and interviews. If a 2:1 does better than you in the test or interview and gets the job ahead of you, you can’t blame the system for that.

Louder sir. First class will open doors, but you need to enter by proving you can do the job.

I haven't never see a firstclass wity empty brain. I tell people who care to listen, if you Channel that energy and concentration into something else I bet you, you will succeed. Dont let their comments way you down, Make judicious use of the first class Apply for scholarships, write Gre or IELTS and apply for finding. That's when reality dawn on some of them that First class isn't a waste. I always appreciate one when I see cos I couldn't make first class but was close. Boy, Is time to explore the world and enjoy little of your hardwork. But dont forget the reward for hardwork is more work

One was complaining to me few days ago - that he had first class but isn’t getting jobs. Asked him how many job tests he had written, he listed about 3. Told him getting those test invites was what his certificate would get him, it is not the fault of the certificates if he couldn’t pass them.

Ma'am, it's too early to regret. Yes, you may not have complement your good grades with a skill, but that doesn't mean having good grades is useless. What is worth doing is worth doing well. I'm still an undergraduate, and by Allah's Grace, I wouldn't settle for less even though I haven't achieve it at present. Having good grades is a thing of proud it doesn't necessarily mean everyone will secure jobs with grades.

When life finally happens to many of you, e go shock una.
Having good grades is great, it opens doors for you, only those prepared for the opportunity end up grabbing it.
Having lesser grades is good as well, it makes you easily diversify into other things, and makes you easily convert your passion into money.
Having worst grades even makes you quickly find how your life will be meaningful, you end up looking for your career path (money, business, traveling for other opportunities) while others bask on the euphoria of good grades.

The truth is, what our parents told us while growing up are all looking like terrible choices, otherwise many graduates won't be taking up jobs with 60k pay and below.

Re: Does First Class Degree Guarantee One A Job? by Xristars(m): 8:14pm On May 10, 2020
It should. But the issue is where r the jobs?
My thoughts were since Nigeria got plenty of ministries and agencies get a job will be easy but connection has bastardize the process. To even get job for fashion house now with 2.1 you go write CV.
Employment now is determined by qualifications, connection and location.
Re: Does First Class Degree Guarantee One A Job? by Dammytrager(m): 8:44pm On May 10, 2020
So I see a lot of people downplaying the efforts of first class graduates. First Class graduates might not be the smartest people in the class but they are the ones who have put in a lot of work, consistency, discipline and many other traits into their academics. Which to me that attitude is more important than talent. If it was easy, everybody would graduate with First Class.

Nonetheless, with the present reality of things in Nigeria, A First Class degree is not an automatic employment visa, you would have to work hard as much as those who graduate with other degrees.
I feel the present Job market is a skill driven market and hence what makes you stand out is not your degree but your skill.

If you can apply the same level of work and consistence you put in your academics into your business or developing a high valued skill then definitely your First Class attitude will lead you to success
