Danielhouston: Education is very tough here. You have to combine classes with hustling and maybe with learning language and if you are not very good at multitasking you can lose your mind. Work is so hard. There were times during summer that in 3days i could not get 5hours to sleep. You jump from one job to another and almost all the jobs involves standing and working for long hours sometimes up to 12 hours straight and also sometimes overnight. The educational system is world standard but in my opinion we have better teachers in nigeria. Any equipment you need for your studies is present you will see it with your eyes and work with it. My university for example is not among the top universities in the country but some of the equipment i have seen in the labs cannot be found in Nigeria. At first it was difficult for me to understand the English accent of German lecturers but as time went along i got used to it. In class everyone minds his business. Even if the class is very small once classes are over everyone goes home and you can see your classmates outside school and they will walk past you like they don’t know you. Also the Asians (Pakistani/Indian) students always like acting smart in the class answering all the questions and wanting to impress the lecturers. They have very good photographic memory and can memorize figures and easily reproduce it the next day without studying it. The major thing i dislike about the educational system in Germany is the system of examination especially oral exams. I believe it is not a fair way of examining students as the student is at the mercy of the lecturer. If he likes you good for you but if the reverse is the case it feels so bad. Your oral exam scores depends on so many factors not related to how much you know the course. Your grade depends on the question you are asked, the mood of the lecturer and the fairness of the lecturer. Some of the lecturers are subtly racist and even before the exams have already ranked the class according to race and no matter how you perform in the exams you cannot score higher than members of the Race ranked higher than you. You could go into the exam and be asked a very simple question you know why the next person will be asked a very difficult question if he is unlucky. Also if you are an introvert You will find oral exams very difficult and even an extroverted student that is not more knowledgeable than you are will perform better than you. 31 Likes 1 Share |

Just like @chuksey1 said, education in Germany is very tough, I mean very very tough. Usually, your first semester makes you feel dumb because most often than not, the foundation you had in Nigeria is very poor and insufficient. You have to read more so as to catch up and most profs. really don't have this pedagogic skills in teaching. You may attend some lectures and come out more confused and lost. They usually assume you already have the foundational knowledge. But some of the profs. who taught me were really super nice, had a couple of beer with some, and another took us on a picnic at the end of the semester all for free. Personally, the exams are really brutal, I thought I was better at written exams than oral exams, but after my first two-semester, I made sure not to take any written exams. In oral exams, you just have to talk and make sure you answer the questions asked, It sure has its disadvantages but it is way better than written exams. Most written exams are 90mins, and some are open book, meaning you can come in with whatever material u want, but it must not be electronic. This kind of exam is not funny. I was lucky to have more Germans as classmates, they were really helpful and they kind of show you the way and method in passing exams. Indians/Pakistanis were never on my list of must-haves. They are cheeky and want to be seen as the best( most intelligent), so they tend to hoard information. 35 Likes 1 Share |

willy2000:.. Am just curious. Do you mean that what is being taught at Nigerian Schools is not up to par with those taught at German School? or Do you mean that the Germans have a way of teaching that is different from the method of teaching in Nigeria? .. .. Those Indians / Pakistani are breed like that. If you have watched the movie : 3 Idiot, you will understand why they are like. .. Imagine 3000 people enrolling for a 300 open slot, automatically competition will be very high. The Indians are taught that life is a race and you need to run as fast as you can to catch up even if it means that you trample on others. .. You cant really blame them, I have some good Indian friends, they are fun and hilarious, but HECK, they love competition. And they will do anything to win. .. That is the reason why the Indians / Pakistanis love love Hackathons. ... Pls I would love your reply to my humble questions. #peace_out 7 Likes 1 Share |

olioxx: The German lecturers are more exposed and experienced than Nigerian lecturers. Most of what our Nigerian lecturers teach are based on the theoretical knowledge they received as students coupled with what they read from text books. But the German lecturers have both the theoretical and practical experience. Where Nigerian lecturers have the upper hand is in teaching and passing the knowledge to students. I don’t know if it is because English is not their mother tongue but Nigerian lecturers communicate better. 10 Likes |

Oh talk about those Indian and Pakistani students, they are so annoying!! It’s like their families would disown them if they didn’t pass an exam or come out the best. They are even more annoying when you live with them in a Studentenwohnheim. I will save a topic for them. Now that you mentioned it, I also remember that I had some racist professors. One day, one professor used Africa as a stupid example in his lecture and I challenged him. The class froze that day. I didn’t give a damn. I stood up and told him to never say that again. I can’t remember what exactly he said. I still passed the course, of course he wouldn’t dare fail me. The way they teach is also confusing as hell. It’s like they already expect you to know it. You’d be ashamed to ask questions sef. I had to tell one professor to slow the fvck down. The thing is, they are not used to people correcting them or complaining. You know Germans are like sheep. They suffer in silence. You can also report a professor if you feel you’ve been unfairly treated. This is not Nigeria where the professors will hate you because you reported one of them. I also did not take a lot of exams on purpose because I wanted to extend my visa. As long as you have some courses to complete, even if your residence permit expires, you can extend it. Some cities give 2 extra years, and some give 1 year. Some students, even after 2 extra years, they still won’t complete their studies and they get 1 extra year. So you could end up spending 5 years on a 2 year master program. 38 Likes 2 Shares |

For some reason, my classmates liked me. I don’t know why. I still had my Nigerian madness and rudeness and I was not afraid to call a b!tch out. Now I’m calmer like a German hahaha. They always wanted me to sit by them. Even when we had to do group projects, they wanted me in their group. I was not even that smart and I mostly didn’t do anything. When I stopped going to class, everyone noticed, including the professors. That was when it hit me that it’s not good to show yourself. It’s always better to stay low-key. The cafeteria food was white rice, potatoes, French fries, ketchup, macaroni, potato pie, cake, and some other bland nonsense. The big cafeteria is like a buffet. You walk around and take what you want, then you go to the cashier and pay. They weigh the food and charge you accordingly. You’d usually find a lot of people in the big cafeteria, noise making, eating and taking pictures. There also some small coffee and cake shops. Just like every University, you’ll find people just hanging around doing big boy and feeling fly. The libraries are quiet. You can log into the computer with your student ID and password given to you by the IT department. You can also check your courses online, register for a class and check your result online. If a class has been postponed, it will be shared online, all on the specific website. 14 Likes 1 Share |

Danielhouston:.. .. That's just their mentality bro. "Life is a race" is one of their mantra. "You struggle or you die trying". .. That is the spirit brother. You la real nigga. People need to fight against racism, either conscious or subconscious racism. .. I appreciate your spirit. .. I recommend reading the paper " Dimension of Racism" organized by OHCHR and UNESCO. ladsonmayor: Construction work is a thing here because they’re always building houses and repairing roads. It’s like every other hand job in Germany. Nobody looks down on you and you’ll always have work. Just be ready for some racism and rudeness because your supervisor would likely be a Russian a$$hole and most of your colleagues would be from Poland, Bulgaria and other East European countries, and some Arabs. If you’re very skilled, you will get more work. You’d also work for a construction company. They usually start work at 6:00 am and work for 9 - 12 hours. They pay you well enough for a hand job. You can earn up to €1,800 - €2000 from construction work. I know that because I have friends in that sector. 16 Likes |

olioxx:I won't' want to generalize, but for my field(CS), what I learned in Nigeria was not actually up to par. For example, I took a module called distributed systems, It is assumed that I am proficient in an OOP language, design patterns are also considered foundational prerequisites. If you don't have these, and attend the class, the discussions are always high level, because they do not only talk theoretical aspect but also practical application and implementation of ideas with real-life scenarios. In Nigeria, data structure, for example, is taught theoretical, you as a student will not build an application to reinforce data structure concepts. You just read, cram, and pass the exams. Not to sound racist, but Indians and Pakistanis were really not the kind of friends I wanted to have, It is good to have competitive friends but the competition has to be healthy. I had an Indian classmate who always wanted to know what grades you had but always lied about his, unlike the Germans who do not give a f**k, even if they fail, they say it as it is. Germans believe in "Zusammenarbeit" = Teamwork, this is what makes them efficient. Right now, I have an Indian colleague in my team who thinks she writes the cleanest code, right from day one her code review comments were always shitty and degrading. The day i called her out brought an end to it. 16 Likes |

ladsonmayor: Also note that plumbing is done differently in Germany. It’s not Nigeria where you’ll see pipe everywhere and be flushing toilet like you’re riding a bicycle. You’d have to learn the German system of plumbing. There are rules to those things 16 Likes 1 Share |

willy2000:.. True.. Nigeria Educational System is more of theory than practical. But just as you said you don't want to generalize, there are still some very good CS lecturer who will teach you both the theory and the practicals in Nigerian Unis and even in some Polytechnic. (I have come across some of them) You won't believe that some Nigerian lecturers still teach Fortran and Basic! E be like say those lecturer nor know say this is 2020. .. Sorry about your experience with the Indians you've met, just like every where there are good , easy going fellas and there are arrogant, snobbish, stupid people. Probably I have come across some good Indians. And I know that with time, you might also meet some nice and easy going Indian guys. Las las we go dey alright. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Berlin in pictures. This is Zoologischer Garten. It is a popular tourist location in Berlin because of the Berlin Zoo and the shopping street. It is a posh area to live in for working class people but most young people find it boring. It is always busy and has a large bus and train station. Also there is Kurfürstendamm, a shopping street. That whole area is where you find most fashion companies, shops, event centers and mall. It is an equivalent of Victoria Island in Lagos. I remember a Nigerian musician shot a music video there and I remember seeing Genevieve (the actress) there. It is one of the destinations for Christmas market and where you’ll find the best Christmas street decoration in Berlin. It is also where the terrorist attack happened in 2016, when an Arab guy drove a truck into a crowd of people at the Christmas market. Find pictures below 12 Likes
