What has the supplied got to do with anything?
Did you not see what happened in 2017?
Immediately the CBN smells the sign of oil increment above $50,they will fight for the naira with all their might, forgetting what they have lost in what they've already sold at low prices. It has happened before so it is not up for debate.
This time around they are even talking about supplying fx for strategic imports, but in 2016 they supplied nothing for no reason, that should tell you how temporar this fx scarcity of this year is going to be.

Are what numbers coming down?Do the number of covid19 cases need to come down before the rest of the world say fùck it and continue with economic activities? undecided
It's like you are not getting it,come next month, everywhere will open, whoever dies dies...
So yes,oil is going to rebound very soon.

It’s you that is not getting it.

In 2018, when crude oil was averaging 50-70 usd, we spent over 44 billion usd saving the naira. How much is currently in the FX reserve? At this current crude oil price?

I will say this again man, nothing is a certainty all na probability. Oil could rebound and it might not. Naira could rebound and it might not, one thing is certain though, nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. You know a probability of what will, not a certainty, that is why people hedge carefully.

Standard Chattered Bank, but the available bonds are at a premium. I think you can buy with 100K minimum.

It is very certain that oil will rebound, not a probability,The only issue is when.
Dangote refinery is just around the corner to start operating, they say 2021,reports say its operation will destroy 40% of Nigeria fx demand.
So what stops the CBN from sacrificing another $5bn more to defend the naira till Dangote starts operating? undecided
What you are seeing as naira depreciation now is simply a result of panic on the side of the CBN.
Nigeria has 34bn dollars now in fx reserves(this clearly tells you they can afford to sacrifice $10bn to defend the naira for 1 year till everything falls into place),has fx loans it has taken from IMF,WB,AfDB,oil price is recovering, economies are opening and dangote refinery will soon start operating.
So I don't "think" whether or not the naira will appreciate,I KNOW it will and all this will happen under 60 days.
Whoever is hedging in fx should know what he or she is getting into undecided
The only saving grace for speculators that seem to be under probability to me is the IMF loan.
It seem it came with some "Conditions",like forcing CBN to stop artificial defense of the naira, else we would have seen action already.
That is the only place I have doubts.

Any Advice on how to go about this ?

I wrote a comprehensive experience of my FGN Bonds investment in this forum around November 2019.
Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by abraolas1: 9:25pm On May 15, 2020
ukay2:

My oga FGN Bonds do not in any where seem to be any legal 419 investment.
Rather it's your lack of understanding that is confusing you.
I have tried severally to explain to you .....but am sorry u still did not understand bond market calculation.

Maybe just try and invest 10k in 3 year bond and hold till maturity it will become clear to you.

I have FGN Bonds that have matured and still maturing in FEB 2020, APRIL 2037.
I have never loose my capital......rather keep getting the coupon payments at the said payment date.

Just hold till maturity....no capital will be loss or sell below the bond offer price before maturity and still make more money from it.
You will only loose some part of your capital when you sell before maturity at offer price above what you initially bought the bond.

Am talking from a practical point as bond investor that has hold till maturity.

Example

I have 12k to buy fgn bond for April 2037 at 16% coupon payments till maturity and I bought the bond for 12% from secondary market. That my 12k may bought me 10k what of the FGN bond since am buying it at 12% instead of the 16%.....meaning the person I bought it from has made 2k from me since his selling at a lower percentage which is 12% if he bought it at 16% from FGN from primary market. .....which I told you earlier that most bonds at primary market are not even sell at that 16% rather below that percentage.

Then I will be getting 16% of 10k bond for 17 years from FGN ...which is N1,600 every year for 17 years which is maturity date ......the FGN will be paying me N800 every 6 months till maturity.

For me after 3 coupon payments. ...which is N2,400....I have recovered the 2k I used to overpay for the bond

So the remaining N1, 600 x 15 years are my gain I hold till maturity (which is N24,000) and at maturity, my 10k I used to buy the bond will be repaid to my account so I have 24k+10k=34k in total.

If I start re-investing every coupon I get to buy the same 17year bond....my coupon payments will keep on increasing. ....you know compound interest.....you can calculate it yourself and know what that compound interest will be ...

If I even want to sell that FGN Bonds 2037 like by 2025 at 9%(below my purchase price of 12%), I will make more money from it because the person buying it from me will pay more to buy that remains bond from me..

If I decide to resale it by 2025 at 15% (above my purchase price of 12%), I will loose some funds from my initial capital.

But for me....like in my NTB investment. ...I hold all till maturity

Don't forget that the only charge your bank will get to help you purchase the bond like the NTB purchase too is (like my bank. ..stanbic. ...N300 for custodian fee + 0.05% of the nominal value of the bond like the example I gave 10k x the number of years of the bond.

I will advise people to buy the FGN Bonds via banks that will charge you 0.05% of your nominal value of the bond. ...because some investment houses charge as high as 0.5 or 1% which maybe too high

I just hope this explanation make sense to you and others so that the issue of bond calculation will be put to rest in this forum.

As NTB interest is low now and many NTB investor are looking for alternative investments, some investment houses or banks or people may even confuse you the more.

NSE is another place u can purchase your dividend paying stocks if you have a high risk appetite like me and others in this forum.

Just be guided in your investments

And may God help us not to be too greedy to loose more funds in time like this. Amen.

As I always say.....SLOW AND STEADY INVESTMENTS WIN THE RACE.

got it..... thanks

CBN has clarified that it wont defend naira for non essential products anymore. Buhari had some major influence on past decisions to defend the naira. Theyve learnt their lessons trust me they wont make thesame mistake again. Truth is nothing is certain anymore even Dangote Refinery may not be sufficient to help the Naira.

The CBN have said many things they never did,so I don't know why Emefiele will want to start acting all independent now.
So if you take their word for anything, cheesy cheesy cheesy
APC still needs to win 2023 so as soon as oil rebounds, expect massive defense on the naira from CBN and a resurface of fuel subsidy.
No be today we start hear things like that.
Why do you say Dangote refinery won't help the naira?I'm curious.

So I wanted to know why he said so,because I know too well that it will strengthen the naira so I wanted him to tell me why it will do otherwise.
Why do you also think that neighbouring countries will buy dangote petroleum in dollars?

They buy with dollars no doubt but why will they waste their precious fx to purchase from a neighbouring country they already have a direct exchange rate with, local currency for local currency due to their bilateral trade?
Will you do it if you were the neighbouring country?

we have a direct exchange with rmb but still use dollars to buy from china...nb the refinery is also a petrochemical complex...sell other chemicals ...if they pay dangote in cfa we ise the cfa earn for Nigerian demanding cfa instead of dollars then cfa ...all na assumptions

Exactly my point. We will earn other surrounding countries currencies for the Nigerians that need them because if dangote demands for dollar outrightly from them,no one will answer him.
He will just see them with naira without him knowing how they got the naira in the first place grin grin cool
By the way,no Nigerian uses dollar to purchase cfa everything being equal, they only do so when one country is having scarcity of dollars(currency smuggling) for personal profits and vice-versa.
But this Dangote refinery is going to change a lot for west and central african trade.

@ahiboilandgas,
Also Nigeria established a rate with the Chinese yuan sometime back no doubt but it is ineffective(we still need dollars to buy from china) because there is a huge BOT (balance of trade) deficit.
Like Nigeria goes to buy all sorts of things from china, but china don't buy nothing from Nigeria in return except crude oil which is an international commodity sold in dollars worldwide.
The only things china buy from Nigeria with naira are smuggled things(wood, minerals, elephant tusk,etc..) and the volume is so little to balance up the importation we do from china.
So you see,how do you have a direct exchange rate(naira for yuan) with this kind of scenario?Impossible.

I believe so.
Did one around 2015 when naira to dollar disparity was much, around 70k between cbn rate and parallel rate.
A lot of guys made it then, you transfer from bank using moneygram to ghana, go to ghana for withdrawal and change the dollar in nigeria.
On average, i made 50k per $1,000 after removing transport and miscellaneous.
I can't do that any more because am too busy and too stressful to be going to accra regularly.
The present difference now between cbn #360/$1 to black market #435/1$ is big to kick start roundtripping again.
I'm too old for that now bro, no more on the street.

You are very right. Buhari is the major reason why cbn is insisting on defending The Naira. He has strong views on keeping The Naira low against the dollar (if you follow his campaign) that’s why Emefiele did everything possible to defend The Naira and even got a another term. It will only take Buhari changing his stance to devalue The Naira, and the new Chief of Staff May play a role, that’s if he becomes as powerful as the former.
All the talks about Dangote refinery is just noise, I don’t see Dangote refinery having any major impact on the exchange rate, that was same noise they made about rice! No one can even tell when that refinery will start functioning

Did you hear yourself? (shocked). From now on I'll take the advice of a lady I respect on this thread: ignore all these men without brains.

Hmmm, seems you are alright after all Nnamz. Had you pegged for a rather braggadocious, ''do you know who my father is '' bellend . Sorry about that. I do apologise.

No bank is going to send your dollars in dom accounts out of Nigeria in times like this. undecided
How it is done is this;
-You take your naira and buy any stable(independent of oil) country's currency that has a direct exchange rate with Nigeria naira.
-You go to the country physically with that cash in hand,go to their black market for fx and purchase dollar,Euro or pounds.
-Carry that fx physically and return back to Nigeria and sell in Nigeria black market too and make what you can make in the name of profit.
Things you should know;
-Your life and money is in danger because if authorities catch you, either they kill you and take your bread or they take the case up and you go to jail, which will make you still lose your bread because that is when you will find out that you have to pay import duty on currency before you can move it in.
Also if robbers catch you too, then it is sorry for you.
-Also,it is a volume business because you will find out that the difference of purchase price of the dollar between these countries(Nigeria and country of purchase) is very small,so you have to hold good money in order to be profitable.Mostly $100k and above.
Also it is a very fluctuating business as rates change everyday so you might want to pick a country you can go to and return the same day so as to make projected profit instantly. You might gain or lose from fluctuations.
-)It is a very shady business too as they can sell you counterfeit fx,so you have to know your dollars or trust your sources.

Look men,it is not a business for the faint hearted but if you have made up your mind, carry on...

The countries that you can do this business in,I will not say.
It is left for you to use your brain grin
There is NO BANK involved,it is an all cash,BLACK MARKET transaction.Let no one fool you!!!

This virus will be studied in medical schools till the end of time. We will still be talking about it in a 100 years time. Stock up foodstuffs and hunker down . It will be a long wait.
