Zaronxpanol:
Hello Op, I studied for my BSc in a foreign country and while my Ex-Husband studied for his MSc, and Ph.D. in Copenhagen Denmark. He returned to Nigeria and struggled financially as a young Lecturer in a government university, during the early stage of his career. However getting married to a financially stable wife like me, who works in a well paying private organization made life more comfortable for him. Although his life is better now as an Associate Professor compared to when he started.
So these facts below are coming from a well-traveled person. I have been to at least 13 countries and 4 continents.
FACTS
1 Abroad is for the strong and open-minded. Are you ready to hustle real hard doing any kind of Job before your dream job?
2 No matter the job you do abroad low class or dirty job, you will earn a decent income. But are you ready to forfeit that I am a graduate or MSc status? In case there is a delay in getting that job you desire, or God forbid the coin turns to the other side.
3 My Ex-husband returned to Nigeria from Denmark not because they were no jobs. But because he couldn't get an Academic job which was his passion, and he is now an Associate Professor in Nigeria. He is happy and people respect his status. Although he may not be rich, he is comfortable in Nigeria's standard. He told me he cannot be selling chicken burgers and chips or being a waiter or security in Denmark with his Ph.D.
While some of his mates who stayed behind are now managers of restaurants in Denmark with their Ph.D. They now earn more than Vice-Chancellors of Nigeria Universities salary-wise except those VC's who became best friends with their bursars and registrars and see their appointment as a call to partake in the sharing of the national cake shocked wink tongue
So are you willing to change your career path in case things don't go your way? or you are after professional prestige which my husband preferred?
As for me, I did jobs unrelated to my course after graduating in the country where I studied and changed to a career in the financial sector immediately I returned to Nigeria. I am after a financially stable and quality life and not after professional prestige and grammar or I must work here or there. Pay me good money( 7 digits ) I will work for even LAWMA cheesy grin
4 If your transfer to a new organization is successful, and they can pay you above 200k I will advise you to stay back.
5 Government job has long term benefits and pays towards the end of your career. Suffer now and enjoy later compared with private jobs where you enjoy now and your future is unpredictable.
6 If you cannot transfer to a well-paying government organization please relocate abroad. 80k is not worth the stress for a 30years old man. Except if you marry a woman with high income who can assist you, otherwise you will live a life of pity with that 80k when you marry a liability or a selfish wife.
7 Know what you want and what you can let go of without thinking twice. You can't lay hold on everything in life peace cool
Wow! Thank you for taking you time to explain indepthly. You are indeed rich in knowledge and very sagacious. Although, not much is happening cos of the covid 19, I'll still try to pursue a better agency with better remuneration while also making plans for migrating. Like I earlier submitted, if I fail to secure a better offer in the public service, I will migrate but apply for a study leave or leave of absence at work, so I can have the option of falling back to my previous work if I do not find Canada as promising as I hoped.

I will appreciate more inputs from you ma'am.

I had a job myself with Lagos State Govt in 2012, and I had a slight opportunity to travel to the US in 2015, I grabbed it and here am I in NY. It was rough in the beginning, but hey I'm glad I did. I am like a moving train Godswilling. I became an EMT, and PCT making 22$&23.50 per hour both jobs respectively. In that I tried go back to school because I had a prior degree in Nigeria. I went in a fast track nursing degree and I am a recent RN-Grad. Bro I had a job waiting in one of the hospitals for 46$ per hour, working 12hr shift just needed 3day work to make fulltime hours and many more overtime if I chose to. I declined that job, and I am 2wks into a supervisory post in a Rehab ctr making 52$ per hr-8hr shift. My main job is with NYC H+H Hospital working as a floor nurse. I am poised to become a practitioner in few years and hopefully God help me. Look bro, July 31st coming will make my 5th Year in NY. Looking at what I've achieved its only God and I doubt I would have been able to do the same with Lagos state govt. I look forward to join the Airforce as a reservist officer RN just to serve 1wkend every month. Bro plz Canada is well way better than Nigeria and I'll implore you to not dull yourself up PLEASE.

Do you understand what it means to become a permanent secretary in Nigeria and eventually becomes a HOS of the federation. The influence, power wielding is left unimagined. Do you think the northerners are studpid when they prefer to stay and man strategic government ministry in Nigeria? No they understand that is where the shot is court. I'm even surprised that someone of his age has achieve such feat in the civil service in our present time.
It is choice, wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

It's wrong for you to be paid ministry salary structure instead of the one for parastatal, but it depends on the salary structure, what I know is that parastatals are paid higher than ministries, just keep trying to get a transfer to a better parastatal, but except if there is vacancy.
We have complained endlessly. We are even a revenue generating agency but because the management under remits or do not even remit at all to the national treasury, the FG never takes us serious. Worse is the fact that because our management are benefitting from the revenue leakages, they are not so keen about pursuing a better remuneration package. I will keep trying till my Canadian visa is ready. Whichever comes first. Thanks Sir

You can choose to be patriotic, remain in Nigeria and let the country that has given you all that you have and made you all that you are right now, draw some value from your positive contributions.

OR

You can choose to be selfish and check out for a rosy life in Canada as has been advised by so many on this thread.

Whichever one of these choices you take, you would be right and justified.

AFTER YOU HAVE SPENT 10 YEARS IN CANADA, YOU WILL FEEL ON TOP OF THE WORLD BECAUSE YOU MANAGE TO BUY YOUR HOUSE ON MORTGAGE AND BUY YOUR CHOICE CAR ON MONTLY CAR FINANCE, YOU HAVE BECOME A CANADIAN CITIZEN, THEN YOU TRAVEL BACK TO NIGERIA FOR HOLIDAYS FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF DOING SHAKARA TO YOUR FORMER COLLEAGUES ONLY FOR YOU TO DISCOVER THAT YOUR JUNIORS THEN WHO WERE UNDER YOU ARE NOW DIRECTORS. YOUR MATES INCLUDING YOUR JUNIORS AND MESSENGERS OWN NUMEROUS CHOICE PROPERTIES INCLUDING THERE IN YOUR ALMIGHTY CANADA AND THEY PAID CASH FOR THE PROPERTIES THANKS TO THE DEALS AND RUNS AND GHANA MUST GO SHARING THAT USUALLY GOES DOWN IN THE CIVIL SERVICE.

ALL THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW IN CANADA, ASK THEM HOW MANY HOUSES THEY GOT AND IF ITS PAID FOR.

ASK THEM IF THEY CAN SURVIVE AND PAY THEIR BILLS AND MANTAIN THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE WITHOUT WORKING FOR 1MONTH.

ASK THEM IF THEY ARE SURVIVING THIS CORONA PERIOD WITHOUT DEPENDING ON THE GIVEAWAY JUSTIN AND HIS GOVERNMENT ARE DOING.

ASK THEM IF THEY CAN COMFORTABLY BUY ALL THE GROCERIES THEY CRAVE WITHOUT USING THEIR CREDIT CARDS.

ASK THEM TO SEND YOU JUST $100.

YOU NIGERIANS THINK LIFE IS VERY EASY IN CANADA.

THIS CORONA SEASON IN NIGERIA, YOU CAN AFFORD TO EAT WHAT YOU CRAVE AND PAY FOR IT WITH YOUR OWN MONEY.

YOU CAN AFFORD TO PAY FOR KUKUNASE IF IT HUNGRY YOU.

THERE IS NOTHING IN CANADA.

YOU CAN NEVER BECOME RICH IN CANADA.

YOU WILL WORK LIKE A SLAVE.
Last month, they sent me a combined sum of N150k (that's over 500 CAD and almost twice my monthly salary) despite the lockdown over there. What exactly is your argument Sir? Thanks for your contribution still...

For me the guys choice should be easy to make , that is to move to Canada, he's still quite young. I'm also. In d same dilemma unfortunately I'll be 40 this year work a federal establishment . Annual salary after tax over 12m . It's a ministry that will continue to exist as long as nigeria exists so job security is 100% even if d country is shut down for 6 months d ministry where I work will continue to pay complete salary without shaking. But I'm fed up with nigeria , u wake up and here how people still billions and u know perfectly well they won't be prosecuted, u hear how poor villagers are massacred in their sleep and u know perfectly well that no one will ever be prosecuted for the killings, you see nepotism in high places and u know that it will never end in nigeria. As we draw closer to 2023 again d whole country will be set on edge again over which region d president should come from. The cycle of uncertainty just continues. But the thought of starting all over again in canada can still be scary. So a lot of us are in the guys shoes. My prayer is that God continued to direct our steps.
True, not easy starting over. Naija takes the Sanity of a man.. A lot of crazy stuffs!, Better to move out.

listen very well and listen, take this advise from someone that spent 35years plus in U.S. I will advise you to stay put and plan you life very in Nigeria.
In about 25 to 30 years from now, your siblings will regret their actions including all those Nigerians that ran away from Nigeria.
Most Nigerians in these countries will die poor, it is not a curse, it's just the reality. 80% of Americans live from pay check to pay check. Google it. It means you're one pay check from being homeless.
The system that these white set up, is Notting but slavery system. You will serve them until you die and your children will continue to serve them until they die too.Generation over generation.
The average black man lacks capacity for deep thinking or logical thinking. We are selling ourselves into slavery and don't know it.I really feel sorry for a lot Nigerians because most of them don't know what is going on in these foreign countries.
I know about 10 of my colleagues that have passed away they die poor including a professor. It's not their fault, it's the system but most africans are ignorant of this system.
How many of the Nigeria billionaires that you know that brought their wealth from U.S. or Canada or London. None, they all made their money in Nigeria.
I'm happy i relocated back to Nigeria with my American wife and we are doing fine and we contributing our quoter to the development of Nigeria. You probably will not appreciate my advice now maybe 20 or 30years from now you will to appreciate it.
hmmm...thanks...I will consider your submission too. God bless you

Hello Nairalanders,

I will be 30 years in a few months and I have never felt so much unease as I do right now. I work with one of the federal parastatals and I am currently on level 10 going to 12 next year. I have a Master degree athough it is not exactly relevant to my current job.

The problem is that my organisation uses the Ministry salary structure and my monthly net is below 80k even as a level 10 staff.

I am not married and I am academically inclined. Asides having a Master degree, I have over 8 professional certifications.

I have been trying to clinch a transfer of service to a better parastatal where the remuneration is better and where my knowledge/experiences as a science graduate will be better appreciated but it has been a bit difficult.

However, just before the COVID-19 episode in Nigeria, I got the right link for a transfer of service to a better parastatal but the process got stalled with the COVID-19 palaver.

I have 4 siblings who are Canadian citizens and they have been on my neck to migrate. I never took the calls seriously until this lockdown period. My siblings are arguing about the uncertainty of the Nigerian economy post-covid and advising me to seize this opportunity to migrate and start a new career over there?

My question therefore, "is it wise to stay back since I have gone quite far in my public service career and just wait for the opportunity to transfer my service to a better paying federal parastatal OR do I migrate to Canada and start a new career?

Your honest inputs will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

@CrazyMan @1forall Please I need your help in pushing this forward for a wider view. Thank you.
If I were you , I would have been there by now. You are wasting time here .You better start going so that you won't regret it tomorrow

This is the best time to move, by the time you're in your 40's it would be much more difficult to have such unfettered access (i assume you do now) to the western economy unless you have substantial liquid asset in excess of $500,0000 to come in as an investor.

lol why you dey sad

I scanned through the first 3 pages, and I see most people have given the op some good advice. ("good" is relative)

Nothing much for me to say here other than to also encourage the op to consider relocating if he feels the need to. I believe he'd have nothing to lose as someone advised that he can take 2 or 3 years off work, relocate, if he doesn't like it, he can always return back.

There are several factors that is so much in his favor and I'll encourage him to leverage them: e.g., he has siblings in Canada (not just 1) so, both home and abroad he has good family ties. Then he also has some years of experience. I dont know particularly what the op does or what he did for masters but there are lots of great opportunities for him. And having people in Canada already will ease the transition phase and make it less stressful.
While also considering and processing relocation, he can begin to learn some skills online particularly in areas where he'd like to dominate/make as a career in Canada. Even if its a 30 minutes online tutorial, do it, keep the certificates of attendance, take exams etc. I can relate to the kind of doors some of these online courses (that we take for granted) can open.

Above all, Op I am a believer of Faith, so I wont end this without saying to commit all your plans in God's hands. - Psalm 37 vs 5 (I dont know if you're also a believer). What works for Mr. A, doesn't necessarily work for Mr. B and vice versa. Dont feel pressurized. So make sure that you plan, but also trust God for direction and discernment. (with discernment comes timing and seasons. i.e, not being too early and not being too late).

I know and can relate to being at crossroads like this.

Finally, @op (TallNigerian) - I know that there are several people that has offered to help however if you still have any questions, feel free to reach out to me. If I dont have the answers, I'll be more than happy to direct you to people I trust.

Disclaimer: I am not an agent, and any information or guidance I provide will be free of charge.

Btw, I said "nothing much to say" and I ended up writing a diary. cheesy
Thank you ma'am @VickyRotex. I appreciate you taking your time to be indepth and insightful in your post.

I have a MSc degree in Environmental and Marine Pollution Management. Although, I am considering pursuing a new career in IT (as most people here have advised) or public health (I have two years experience in this field before joining the civil service and the global pandemic just reawakened me to the relevance of public health experts and health policy managers globally).

I will begin to take online courses as you habe suggested.

Also, I am a Christian and believe in the efficacy of prayers.

I wouldnt mind reaching you for more guidance. Thanks again
