i think you can have both my broad. you will be surprised...when you scratch the surface small.....to know that more than quite a handful of naijas..even in civil service have dual citizenship.
with the global covid19 lockdown though, I believe all such moves are 'on hold' for now.
las las...i recommend you keep working on the Nigerian opportunity while at the same time keeping eye on the Canada opportunity....which is only likely to open when the global lockdown is eased....and what's more, the process is not moinmoin....it takes months if not years to emigrate legally....unless you want to land there as 'stoway' in which case you would have made up your mind to put away all your bukuru certificates/experience and start as a cabbie or farmhand and begin to work your way up with or without your siblings social/palliative support.

Thank you. If I'm consider the option of leaving, I'll be using the express entry route. I only need to prepare for and ace IELTS as other factors such as age, work experience, academic qualification and having siblings who are canadian citizens put me at advantage. Precise, my family has a good migration history in canada. Even other families use our assistance to migrate. Actually, I'm considering that option because of my unborn children. I know training children with a salary of less than 100k in Nigeria can be herculian. My siblings told me their kids enjoy free education in canada.
That's it my brother... I wish you well wink

[nice one quote author=NDakota post=89847172]The career dilemma...

Many years ago I was where you are now.

I took the road less traveled. I settled for a career in Nigeria.

I got a job in a Big 4. Then moved on to an FMCG, where the perks are much higher!

On education, I got chartered, and I'm finishing an MBA.

On family, I got married to my best friend from University, and I just made my first baby.

Do I regret not moving to the US to join my mom, a US citizen?

I do. Every. Single. Minute.

Why? Nigeria is a very uncertain place to stay and thrive. You could be up there in the sky today and the next week you're back on the mud. In a country of many poor people, you run the risk of becoming a victim of crime due to envy...post COVID-19 it'll get worse.

Look at you at 30. You're dithering. You're pussyfooting.

Look at me at 28. I still regret the mistake my 25 year old self made. I'm pushing daily to leave Nigeria.

I want to leave, not because I'm broke in Nigeria, but the collective poverty in this country scares me...

Most crimes committed today are more out of envy and hunger than of greed.

If you can, please run. For your SAFETY!

Although I have garnered experience in the health and financial services sectors, my major experience in the civil service is mainly administrative. From my findings, my job classification is included in the Canadian NOC. My professional certifications are spread across HSE, EIA, Fire Safety and Prevention, CPR and First Aid, Oil and Gas Environmental Management, etc. I also have adequate knowledge of the use of Microsoft Office and some other statistical package like SPSS. I intend to enroll for more ICT related trainings though.

Three of my siblings over there are married save one. They all have their citizenship now. They are doing white collar jobs and are very okay. They reside in different provinces; Winnipeg, Ontario, Alberta.

I have quite some savings plus a land property in Abuja (cost about 3m) although my siblings keep reassuring me of picking up all necessart expenses needed to migrate successfully. Last month alone (despite the COVID-19), they sent me 120k altogether for my upkeep. Thanks

This is good , id advise you to join your sibling in alberta. Calgary has one of the softest landing for nigerians. As most nigerians there are the proper ones and housing and cost of living is cheap.

Do you have a degree? if so thats good, look here for jobs. But i wouldnt stay with my siblings for too long to the sooner u plan the better.

I would keep that abj land dont loose ur naija roots , forget what every one is saying you will regret it. The nigerians that are doing well are bi coastal. Coming to nigeria sometimes puts canada is perspective and vice versa. You will miss the simple things of naija dearly

Set around a year or a year and 6 months depending on if u need to go to school or not. This is a reasonable time to become fully settled. Good luck.

OP I believe you have some low self esteem. My monthly net pay is over 400K and yet I feel grossly underpaid and cash-strapped. I'm in my early 30s and single. Maybe you have other means to supplement your income, but I can't understand how a person with your qualifications would feel okay with the salary amount you just mentioned. I understand that consistently earning a paltry sum can make you adjust your earning potential negatively, but you have the opportunity to make something of yourself and earn real income that can make you save something substantial by the time you're 40. All you need is hardwork and focus. Do not miss it.

TallNigerian:
grin ;DThis so so funny. If I was earning up to 50 or 60% of your current pay, I may not have considered migrating at all.....but then, the stories my siblings always tell me about free education for the kids till are set to enter the university, welfare for the kids till they reach 18 years, free health care, great social amenities, multicultural diversity, diverse job opportunities, ability to easily pursue new careers, preference for merit etc are some of the reasons I find the offer really enticing.

They would be here for long. Once buhari is done ruling el rufai is next. By the time the north is done with Nigeria, the country would be a cesspool of poverty and hopelessness. We are even enjoying now. Future Nigeria is better imagined than lived through. It's the present Nigerian children born in Nigeria I really pity. They go hear am.

We 90s kids are way poorer than our parents. It's abnormal. Skyrocketing unemployment. It's not uncommon to see people living with their parents up to their 30s. Op is 30 and earns a paltry 80k. His salary saved up for a year can't even get a good car. Is that life? My dad got married at 28 and was working with a good salary in the bank with just wassce. Such is not even possible in Nigeria today. The country is retrogressing everyday.

but guy u bad oooo, how sure r u that his salary if saved for a whole year can't even get a good car? loooollllllzzzzzzzz

That phrase about collective poverty is what struck me to reply. Guy, relocate to Canada fast. Stop wasting your destiny. People earn as high as over N1M monthly in Nigeria and they are relocating. It’s not all about money. Relocate fast!

Currently I spend 25% of my time in Nigeria and the rest in US.

My advice: Move. Don't look back. You are single and it is the best time to take risks. You will adapt easily to Canadian life since you have siblings there who can guide you properly. Good life doesn't have to be flamboyant.

After this coronavirus pandemics, who knows what Nigeria will turn into? I had always gambled against Nigeria and won each time.

Let’s put it in context.

Nigeria, as an entity, is systematically flawed. The ‘staying back to fix the country’ mantra is untenable and futile. Your positive influence is inconsequential. You are at the mercy of a recurring, selfish, incompetent and corrupt leadership at all levels.

I was in a similar situation as the OP many many years back and forever thankful to God for making the right call. I migrated. Started from the bottom, odd jobs and all to fund my education. Two masters degrees from top universities and a decade in investment banking /technology in top global firms, I now run my own high tech firm. Here, what you become is what you make of yourself, your desire, your focus, your abilities. Unlike in Nigeria, you are not shackled by a backward, limiting system. In Nigeria, you may get to the top after many years, but can end up in abject want in a very short time. Zero social safety net. The negative factors are overwhelming- lack of security, healthcare, etc.

Dude, I attest that I suffered 10 times more discrimination and harassment in Nigeria than I have here in the UK. These advanced societies are fairer, value oriented systems. You add value, you WILL thrive. The OPs dedication to education and self development is precisely what works here. You’ll be propelled to new heights with time and commitment. Steadily. You can contribute into Nigeria as a diasporian if you so desire through projects, which is precisely what I’ve done. The Nigeria of today has zero consideration for your tomorrow.

I have run a number of models on Nigeria and can tell you it’s not looking good at all. The decline has been in precipitation for years, exacerbated by the present crop of incompetent and nepotistic leadership. It’s akin to a jog to the bottom.

The far and near term prognosis for Nigeria is troubling and unflattering

Be guided, not only for your sake, but for that of your children unborn
These gave me goosebumps. Thank you for sharing your honest thoughts.

My orientation in life has always been to have a very viable plan B, no matter my current condition. You haven't even started the Canada process; do you know how long that will take? You better start the process now and continue your civil service work cos believe me you would need the fund. Lv10 80k salary, new bank staff 240k and those ones dey ja go Canada like water. My brother when u get married and have children will 80-90k help?
Thanks bro. I have substantial savings although I will be getting aa lot of support from my siblings. Thanks for your advise

Bros you have no business being in Nigeria, with all the insecurity, the bad govt, bad road, bad eco system. Kai them really say some people get cap but no head while some get head but no cap. Even if you are the Director of your parastatal you just have to go to Canada for a better Life.
thanks for your advise bro.

One thing u need to consider is that the so called job security in MDAs in Nigeria does not guarantee social security which is ultimate. Even after retirement, your gratuity and pension are nothing to write home about and very difficult to access because of bottlenecks and corruption. Just be deligent pursue you inter-ministerial transfer which likely guarantees higher income and then use that income pursue Travel plans. Good luck!
You made some salient points bro. Thank you

Totally understand where you are. At 27 years, I was doing pretty well in Nigeria. Just got married, had a nice house, lovely car, had 3 staff and an office in Port Harcourt until my wife decided she wanted us to go live in the UK where she was a citizen.
Being a patriotic Nigerian, I was not keen. Life was good here. But trust the power of a woman, few months later in was shutting up my business and relocating.
To cut the long story short, that was the best decision I made. Was it tough? Definitely yes. My first job was in a factory pushing pallets for 1 year. Was it worth it? Bro, definitely yes. I lost a business and a 7 years Honda accord in Nigeria and thought I was being stupid. Today I sit with CEOs of large firms, run 2 businesses, drive a brand new Jaguar and Mercedes, not renting and am just getting started.
In other words, move!
I love your story. It's inspiring. Thanks for sharing and thanks for your advise.
