Even after the anticipated upgrade you are likely to earn 150 or less.

Your best bet - migrate to Canada.
The agency I planned to transfer to pays above 250 for my level. However, I think I am now considering the Canada option. There are quite a number of people who earn even above that amount yet they plan to migrate. I am inspired by these stories...thanks for your input bro

This should answer your question. Most people migrate without even having anybody over there but here you are still contemplating with 4 siblings who are even Canadian citizens.

Some people just make comments to ruin the life of others "...if e no better for me,e no go better for am".

Before I left Nigeria,I was earning close to 200k monthly, yet I wntd to leave. my friend who kept telling me trash about abroad got the opportunity and left his permanent job, wife and baby and travelled...next,I was kidnapped and nearly killed, lost everything. Luckily,I too travelled few months after him.

My advice, don't let bad belle people ruin your life!
Thanks for sharing your story. It will help a lot.

Pls link me up with your siblings sir, let me migrate on your behalf
TallNigerian:
Hello Nairalanders,

I will be 30 years in a few months and I have never felt so much unease as I do right now. I work with one of the federal parastatals and I am currently on level 10 going to 12 next year. I have a Master degree athough it is not exactly relevant to my current job.

The problem is that my organisation uses the Ministry salary structure and my monthly net is below 80k even as a level 10 staff.

I am not married and I am academically inclined. Asides having a Master degree, I have over 8 professional certifications.

I have been trying to clinch a transfer of service to a better parastatal where the remuneration is better and where my knowledge/experiences as a science graduate will be better appreciated but it has been a bit difficult.

However, just before the COVID-19 episode in Nigeria, I got the right link for a transfer of service to a better parastatal but the process got stalled with the COVID-19 palaver.

I have 4 siblings who are Canadian citizens and they have been on my neck to migrate. I never took the calls seriously until this lockdown period. My siblings are arguing about the uncertainty of the Nigerian economy post-covid and advising me to seize this opportunity to migrate and start a new career over there?

My question therefore, "is it wise to stay back since I have gone quite far in my public service career and just wait for the opportunity to transfer my service to a better paying federal parastatal OR do I migrate to Canada and start a new career?

Your honest inputs will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

@CrazyMan @1forall Please I need your help in pushing this forward for a wider view. Thank you.

The best option is to come to Canada bro.Trust me.It’s way better And SAFER.I’m 18 and working part time while an undergrad student and I’m still making more than many Nigerian graduates.Less toxic environment and better pay.

Let’s Do Math:Let us assume you come to Ontario Or Ottawa(two provinces) and work 80 hours weekly while earning $16/hour(Be it a dishwasher or receptionist),that adds up to about 4000 (AFTER TAXES) a month .Average rent in these two areas is about 700,averge grocery expense is 300, transport is another 150.Miscellaneous(FLEXING) is 350.That means you still and should have at least 2500 monthly savings.Convert that and that’s about 9.5 million savings annually. You fit send your mama something. And trust me,it gets better as you gain experience.

Now,it’s very important to make friends (both white and black) as you will save and gain a lot from them. Some will be driving you around, you will eat from some and this consequently saves you money.

Infact bro,if you get chick(all these white Hot chicks),they will even cook and buy you gifts. You may even save rent money.Trust me,they crave big black dick.

Some weird things you will see(putting dog in front seat and attaching dresses to them) but it’s good lol.Occasionally, you may experience indirect racism but not often.

Run to Canada bro.Even if it means leaving your family. It will bear fruits.
Indepth submission. Thanks for taking your time. I appreciate.

being in level 10 does not tell us how many years you have put into Fed Civil Service because we don't know what was your entry level based on your qualifications. If you have been confirmed, good. If you have worked up to 10 years, better(meaning you're entitled to gratuity and pension).
If the later is the case, I will advice you not just to pack up your bags and travel to CA. This is because, once you leave Naija and travel overseas, within the first 6 months, the thoughts that will come to you are "e be like say I don make mistake oo". "This thing no dey as I been reason am o". "I been dey do well for Naija pass this level naa". No matter who you be, no matter the family wey you get abroad, no matter how rosy your friends wey dey abroad been paint am, you must face huge shock, left, right, center (serious gbas!gbos!!). As you arrive, after 3days max, you're on your own. The only exception to the shock is if your are a politically exposed Nigerian pikin wey your thieving parents don buy house abroad and you travelled with a Mastercard wey "carry weight".
So, back to the main point. I will advise you to process a study leave, with or without pay based on what is obtainable in your ministry. Go to Canada as a student ( relevant M.Sc as u said). If you reach there and survive the shock I explained above, you send in your resignation from there and stay. But if you get there and dislike the climate, poor social life, starting afresh both in carrear and life generally, you jejelly come back home. After all, you are in line to be a director or permsec all things being equal. Good luck

Thank you for your advise. I entered service on level 9 with my MSc. I have served for just 5+ years. I will consider your submission. Thank you

The career dilemma...

Many years ago I was where you are now.

I took the road less traveled. I settled for a career in Nigeria.

I got a job in a Big 4. Then moved on to an FMCG, where the perks are much higher!

On education, I got chartered, and I'm finishing an MBA.

On family, I got married to my best friend from University, and I just made my first baby.

Do I regret not moving to the US to join my mom, a US citizen?

I do. Every. Single. Minute.

Why? Nigeria is a very uncertain place to stay and thrive. You could be up there in the sky today and the next week you're back on the mud. In a country of many poor people, you run the risk of becoming a victim of crime due to envy...post COVID-19 it'll get worse.

Look at you at 30. You're dithering. You're pussyfooting.

Look at me at 28. I still regret the mistake my 25 year old self made. I'm pushing daily to leave Nigeria.

I want to leave, not because I'm broke in Nigeria, but the collective poverty in this country scares me...

Most crimes committed today are more out of envy and hunger than of greed.

If you can, please run. For your SAFETY!

Are you saying there's no crime over there? Brotherly, kindly watch investigation Discovery ( ID). For real, we are learning when it comes to crime here.

You have a big opportunity bro. My wife and I jointly earn 900k monthly and we're still looking to move to Canada, starting with trying to start our application for the PR first. I would have preferred the UK but they're making migration quite difficult these days and only one of my siblings has got their citizenship yet.
Even if not for yourself, for the sake of a better quality of life for your children, try to at least consider Canada.
900k? shocked

Bro, I know Civil servants in Federal Ministries are poorly paid. What shocked me was seeing you quote 80k as your net salary for a level 10 officer working in a Fed Parastatal/Agency. Other members have confirmed some Parastatal actually pay Ministry level salary. Thanks.
That's the reality bro. You are welcome

You're right.
It's only those in the health sector that earn relatively higher even at the same level.
A medical doctor (fresh) currently earns 220k and pharmacists about 138k.
Other sector workers especially the mainstream public service are only struggling, lecturers are not exempted...A new medical doctor far earns than a Ph.D other.
I've all the salary structures with me.
No wonder you are so informed. Many people are actually ignorant of the true state of things in the civil service. Thanks brother. Do you work in the health sector?

My brother, I had lived in two other countries including Canada. No doubt the quality of living in Canada is high but It comes with a prize. In a country where people are paid by hour should make you ask why. You have to work your ass up daily. If you want to enjoy the kind of life you are used for the past 30 years then you will constantly be thinking of Nigeria and it will push you to come back to Nigeria for a vacation. Definitely you will miss your social life in Canada, the grooves and the layback Nigeria brings. You will miss your friends in Nigeria (for real). On the other side, the things you take as Luxury in Nigeria are taken for granted in Canada. You will never be debt free if you live in Canada and that is is how the society is structured. You work and work and work. No break. The phone you use is on contract, the water you drink is not free, the house you live is on 25 to 30 years mortgage. No free TV to watch. When yo hit 50 + years those things we call luxury in Nigeria but are taken for granted will not make meaning to you again. You start thinking more of social life and Nigeria. You want to come back or want your kids to come back to Nigeria to study. If you make it in Nigeria, then there will be no place like Naija to live.
Hmm.....quite revealing from another perspective. Thanks for sharing. I will keep this to mind.

thanks bros. I appreciate your input.

hmmmm... True all you've said. And other organizations really want to see experience aligned with field of study and training.

What are your values and inner aspirations, if they align with going abroad, that may be best, or you come up with a one or two years plan to gather resources, or maybe start doing on the side what aligns with your discipline so you have some experience, after all the civil service gives a lot of free time or just take the advice on taking a study leave or something to go sail the abroad waters cheesy if it doesn't work, ur job remains.
I'll keep this to my heart. Thank you
