I really wants to know what is the problem with him nairalanders. After I finished secondary school I once taught some pupils in primary school though there were dull ones too there but with time I could see improvement unlike my brother i always try to teach him from time to time but it kind of frustrating as he doesn’t even seems like he will ever grab anything and he doesn’t behave like he wants to learn anything.

He makes it seems as if he is not interested book or arithmetic at all …we all tried talking to him endless time to always read any time he his less busy but he never does except he is being forced.

He rarely talks, he loves to keep to himself always, he doesn’t have interest in anything unlike we the others that are die hard football fans, most times my mom will tell him to even go out to play and mingle he will not still want to go, he prefer to stay at home seating all day without reading or doing anything, even if it is to draw or play football he wont.

This matter is not making everyone happy at home we don’t even know the solution to his problem again, as in imagine having a child that is 14 years old that doesn’t know the difference between 17 and 71 it is just so bad…..

We don’t know if his case is mental or spiritual. please nairalanders I know there are child experts in the house or anybody who have experienced something like this before what do you think is the problem and possible solutions to the problem your contributions are welcome.

In computer system, such problem is call loss of cmos memory, as result of unclear viruses from the system carche. The remedy is to reload the system bios information. Ur brother need brain surgery not home teacher.

I have no idea what this is, but the part where you said he doesn't know the difference between 17 and 71 got me thinking about dyslexia or dyscalculia. From your narrative, the greater part of his problem points towards arithmetics, so it's more likely to be dyscalculia. It's also possible to have more than one learning disability, so chances are he's suffering from both.

People with learning disabilities are not necessarily dull (or unintelligent), it's just that the parts of their brains that are responsible for the performance of generally easy tasks which are difficult to them, are in a state of disorder. I'm a slow learner, but I don't consider myself dull, and that's because I believe every individual needs specific conditions to enable them learn effectively.

That boy may be even more intelligent than all of you. He needs to visit a psychologist or learning specialist who understands what it means to have an LD. Stop wasting money on lesson teachers.

Besides him been unable to differentiate numbers and all, he has certain abilities that you guys haven't had time to know.

Do yourself a favour. If you really want to help him, watch him for a full day. And see what he sees. You will find his intrest and reasons

Your brother is not mentally retarted. Even in the auspice of mental retardation, we have the educable and trainable. They are useful. Some work in the bakery, farm, e.t.c

You said your brother writes 71 instead of 17. This can be dyslexia.

You said your brother doesn't relate with people. He must be living in his world. Autism may be tracebale a little. And there are classes of autism. Did he show the signs from 2-3 years? If not. It is not autism.

You said he is good at nothing. Go close to him, speak with him. Find out from him his like and dislikes. Talk to him. If truly he is autistic, he will be good at something.

His behaviour may be due to upbringing. Too much pet and all of that.

It may also be due to attention. He doesn't want to stress himself. He doesn't want to learn anything and he wants to be on his own.

Reflect on the past and see when all this started.Please do help him.

You need to seek a Child psychologist or any psychologist ASAP before it begins a long time default.

You may not believe it but your brother honestly wishes to be as smart as the rest of the family. You may not also believe that he is confused as to why he is different. Your family should help him and let him grow. Let him understand that you love him nonetheless. Do not compare him with his mates. All I am saying is you all should try and encourage him. He might still come out of this condition and surprise all of you in the future.

Hope you find the right help for your brother. As most people have pointed out. Your brother is not dull, he just need help with his yet to be diagnosed disability.
If this could help you understand, I do not know the times table until well into JSS3, I could not tell the time until after my SSCE. I only write enough to get me a pass and I don't write notes in class because writing distressed me. I still could not handle complex maths problems but I have improved a little. My older brother's friend used to call me Ab-dull like half- dull or something. Teachers would call me lazy for not taking notes. No one could help because our educational system is not able to recognize pupils with special needs. I did not recognize that I have an issue myself. My point is your brother is not alone, a good number of the population has learning disability but Nigeria being what it is, we do not have statistics. he needs care, love, attention and expert's help.
Your brother need to be seen by a learning disability experts, in Nigeria they are only available in Mental health hospitals or Mental health departments of teaching hospitals.

You have to take things easy with him because it's not his fault also. Few days ago i read about a story of a guy who has a junior sister also with similar issue. I can't remember what the condition his been called now. She was actually diagnosed at the hospital. She is 24 years old but has a reasoning capacity of a 8 year old kid. You may Google and find out more. Remember he's not happy the way he his also what he need is to feel loved at this moment.

Your brother unfortunately sounds like he has autism. It is not his fault, it's a disability that affects emotional intelligence, and the ability to connect with other people. It is usually described as the inability to read other people's minds.

Make una do family meeting donate the guy for medical experiment simple.

Please search for a film like stars on earth for your family to watch.

Choose a sport or let him choose a sport to pick an interest in, or see if he has interest in Music. There is no such thing as a dull child, it's ur job as parents to discover the talent.

Not every one will be a Doctor or Engineer as most parents seem to want. There is a hidden talent in that child discover it. Don't judge him cis he don't know maths or English.

Find out wat he is interested in, buy a musical instrument or a sports item. Just do something but don't call him dull at all.

God doesn't waste.

I actually believe there is some talent hidden in him but we have tried all means to get him to show it but he won't even relate with people

I think you have to discover him. His mode of learning and interest. He might attend the best school does not mean they are delivering knowledge to him the way he understands. He definitely has his way of grasping knowledge which you yet to discover.

And trust me, you will be amazed when you find out.
