Just be hopeful and work on him by hiring a good teacher that will be patient to teach and get where his problem is coming from, he can still learn because there are some children that are slow learners, once they pick to learn, every one will be surprise on amazing ability to learn, yes autism may be part of his problem but he can still learn so far he's not an slowpoke.

Lemme ask, is he a lefter, I mean using left hand to write? You will teach him something and in few hours he can't write those things you teach him? He easily forgets what ever you teach him ? Don't feel it's autism, I might not be autism

Kindly respond to this and I will give you something to brows on.

Your brother is not dull ooooo. He just hasn't made up his mind yet to be educated.

Don't force him to learn, allow him to identify his strengths use that to advise him.

I have a sibling of same issue but when it comes to (business, marketing) i no reach am upon say i go Cambridge. Now he is exposed and gradually learning the basics.

You have spoken well, i think i noticed his brother is idle, and his brain is not working.
I suggest, your brother should play do something that is good that he likes.

At a young age it is crucial that the child have rich experiences, it could be played, anything he likes, it could be drama, sports, painting, playing outside, having conservation, singing or wring something, even if its is poor English, just let him be.
DTeekay:
Choose a sport or let him choose a sport to pick an interest in, or see if he has interest in Music. There is no such thing as a dull child, it's ur job as parents to discover the talent.

Not every one will be a Doctor or Engineer as most parents seem to want. There is a hidden talent in that child discover it. Don't judge him cis he don't know maths or English.

Find out wat he is interested in, buy a musical instrument or a sports item. Just do something but don't call him dull at all.

God doesn't waste.

It's a lie. That's a myth. Autistic people are not as bright as Hollywood has made us believe.

Yes they are. It might be english or math (mostly math) but they are definitely good at something. Anyway that is neither here nor there. Everyone has the pace they learn. And considering it's Nigeria i'm not too surprised the kid is not that bright. Instead of them to take the kid to a professional the OP is asking NL doctors for their diagnosis.

Re: HELP! My Brother Is Too Dull by Casper21: 10:21pm On May 29, 2020
I think it has something to do with the brain. It could be dyslexia or ADHD. Too bad we don't have neurological doctors or individuals who specialize in that area of learning deficit in Nigeria. But see my advise, buy some Vitamin b complex and Fish oil. He should be taking it once a day as it helps with brain function.

While your brother MAY be suffering from a medical condition like autism or whatever, I can tell you from experience that there's a high possibility of him suffering from low self esteem and depression, hence the withdrawal and isolation. Please make sure your brother is mentally and emotionally okay, so he doesn't suffer trauma later in life. I had a similar childhood with your brother's.

People were always laughing at me that I had big head, and that stuff eat very deep down that I struggled with low self esteem throughout adolescence.

If your brother is only dull. Then he should be very playful. Hence, there's more to it.
I am so sure he his not depressed though it like his self confidence is extremely low and he his very playful in fact he his not playful at all

Re: HELP! My Brother Is Too Dull by SeriouslySense(m): 10:26pm On May 29, 2020
So how does your brother feels and your family should understand how they can impart positivity and self-confidence in him, don't judge him, don't be harsh, your brother may be sensitive, and he retreats into his shell, and at this young age, it is important that he is actively engaged with his environment.

Maybe he should be encouraged and not judged.
Try exploring the environment with him, without ridicule.
Try various games with him, that challenges the brain, like scrabble, spelling, chess, remember just do it for fun, don't Judge.
Try pets, try to encourage his empathy by owning a pet, like a dog, or something to keep him company.
Isolation is dangerous, so we need him to explore.
Let him be and try making things, like carpentry or gardens, this maybe good for a sensitive child, and when he is alone, he may try been creative

Also for this sensitive child don't push him, rather draw him in.
A sensitive child may like Drama, try acting a drama, and see if he wants to try.
Try mathematical games, you can get them on your phone.

But Whatever you do, do not push, attract his attention

I swear u just said my mind... That his brother is also 80 like me... That boy doesn't need any home teacher... Just leave and give him time and space trust me he will work things out himself.

Stop stressing him pls.

Humanoid01:
I have no idea what this is, but the part where you said he doesn't know the difference between 17 and 71 got me thinking about dyslexia or dyscalculia. From your narrative, the greater part of his problem points towards arithmetics, so it's more likely to be dyscalculia. It's also possible to have more than one learning disability, so chances are he's suffering from both.

People with learning disabilities are not necessarily dull (or unintelligent), it's just that the parts of their brains that are responsible for the performance of generally easy tasks which are difficult to them, are in a state of disorder. I'm a slow learner, but I don't consider myself dull, and that's because I believe every individual needs specific conditions to enable them learn effectively.

That boy may be even more intelligent than all of you. He needs to visit a psychologist or learning specialist who understands what it means to have an LD. Stop wasting money on lesson teachers.

I got the following from a website and it fits with some of the descriptions you made:
Dyscalculia

A specific learning disability that affects a person’s ability to
understand numbers and learn math facts. Individuals with
this type of LD may also have poor comprehension of math
symbols, may struggle with memorizing and organizing
numbers, have difficulty telling time, or have trouble with
counting. https://ldaamerica.org/types-of-learning-disabilities/

Hi good day my fellow Nairalander please I will really need your experience about this issue. Please help me read to the end as it is a little bit long.

My junior brother is 14 years old and to be sincere I haven’t seen anybody as dull as him. I don’t know if it is natural but I just can’t understand why someone at that age could still be struggling with very simple arithmetic. My brother can’t write 1 – 150 correctly at 14.

He seems too dull; note he attends one of the best private school around our area, though I know you might say maybe education is not his way but even if you want to drop out from school you should know some basic things like money, time, multiplication and so on but my brother doesn’t know anything I must say, even to write his name correctly is a problem. It is making everyone unhappy lot of money is being spent on lesson teachers and other things for him still no improvement.

I am a student of one of the top federal University in Nigeria same as my other siblings even at both secondary and undergraduate level we were always above average so I can’t say his problem is genetic. I really wants to know what is the problem with him nairalanders. After I finished secondary school I once taught some pupils in primary school though there were dull ones too there but with time I could see improvement unlike my brother i always try to teach him from time to time but it kind of frustrating as he doesn’t even seems like he will ever grab anything and he doesn’t behave like he wants to learn anything.

He makes it seems as if he is not interested book or arithmetic at all …we all tried talking to him endless time to always read any time he his less busy but he never does except he is being forced.

He rarely talks, he loves to keep to himself always, he doesn’t have interest in anything unlike we the others that are die hard football fans, most times my mom will tell him to even go out to play and mingle he will not still want to go, he prefer to stay at home seating all day without reading or doing anything, even if it is to draw or play football he wont.

This matter is not making everyone happy at home we don’t even know the solution to his problem again, as in imagine having a child that is 14 years old that doesn’t know the difference between 17 and 71 it is just so bad…..

We don’t know if his case is mental or spiritual. please nairalanders I know there are child experts in the house or anybody who have experienced something like this before what do you think is the problem and possible solutions to the problem your contributions are welcome.

Please help me push this pleaseeeeee

There is a programme that airs on 99.3 Nigeria info.it is about dyslexia and children with learning difficulties. It comes on air on Saturdays from 8 or 9 am .They can help him.

Try playing an instrument or try many things, and just be funny, don't be serious, you want to relax the mind so that the mind is open.

I believe there is no one that is dull it's just that many haven't discover their abilities. Instead of wasting money on him why can't you try to discover what he's capable of doing and build him up from their or better still allow him to learn vocational skills.
