I would advice you do
But first u save enough and you link up with the right people, gather money making information and start on the long run its way better than working for someone despite collecting 450.

I have this feeling that there is more the OP is not telling. How old he is, how long he has been working for that bank, his likely payoff if he chooses to resign and why he is not considering the option of moving closer to his new job location.
OP does not seem to me as someone who is business inclined, because the question you asked appears too cheap. You have no business plan, you have saved up just N2m, you have kids to care for and you are considering resigning because of long hours of commuting. I think he has not mentioned his ACTUAL problem.
OP you are likely under pressure either domestically or at work, and you are better be wise not to act rashly. Gone are the days N2m amounts to something in Nigeria. When I read your post I thought I read N20m only to learn from those commenting that it is N2m. I too wanted to learn, but no one has mentioned any business one can start and run with N2m in Nigeria that can fetch one 50% monthly of OP's current salary. Is there any business like that? That one will not have the kind of stress that OP is wanting to run away from? I am just asking to know please.

We pray situation improves, in Nigeria currently unemployment is not something to wish even ones enemy. Have you thought of sitting watching those kids crying for groundnut and biscuit and you cannot provide it for them or asking for assistance from friends and you are turned down? Running any business in our generator-propelled economy is no fun OP. Do your due diligence before you embark on anything.
.

There are countless businesses that generate half or even his full salary in a month. However, it's not as profit rather as revenue. Which is why my issue with Nigerians when they start a business. There's this notion that the money the business generates in her nascent months is the profit. No! It's the revenue which is not supposed to be eaten rather ploughed back into the business. Before he will begin to see the profits (which he is entitled to eat), it can take up to five years and this dependent on the kind of business. Unfortunately like you stated, he is not specific on important details, so I refrain from going further.

Dear all,

I really need an advice. I currently work with one of the Nigerian banks. My monthly take home is about 450k and quite good. My major problem right now is that I have just been transferred from a Branch at one end of Lagos to another end of Lagos. All efforts to convince my boss to deploy me to a closer branch has proved abortive.

Going to work daily right now is a very difficult especially during this raining season and covid 19th period. I spend roughly 3-4 hours on the road when going to work and back home.

I am currently raising my kids on my own right now and dont know how I would manage when school resumes. Before now I drop them off on my way to work in the morning and my friend picks them up to her house in the afternoon till I get back.

I currently have a savings of 2million and would love to start a biz( I dont know what kind) as am comptemplating resigning and start a biz instead so that I can have time for my kids and not die due to stress

Please i really need advice for you all.

Do not. Get a place closer to your new branch. Starting a new business amidst all this economic uncertainty isn't advisable. Besides a business is going to take a lot of your time and effort and to meet up you might find yourself being out as much as you are right now.

My sister quit your job is not the solution at the moment, why don't you get an house help if you don't mind one in a reliable source to cater for your kids and other house chores, secondly try to get an apartment closer to your place of work to make it proximity with this your salary you must be a BO or SBO that means you are a senior banking officer . Setting up a business at this time might be waste of money, time and resources during this lockdown of a thing, try to wait till after this Coronavirus end and plan for a lucrative business that can be easy for you to manage while at work so that you don't just get dupped by a swindler, God bless you.

See 2m will finish in a matter of six month. Send your kids to your parent. Business is very risky now and efen6if you have a professional skill you might not have the network to gross 5m per annum. Start paying attention to your bank customers. You discover good niches from there transactions and quietness

If you have up to 2m and have decided to start a business, let that business no cost you up to 1m. Handling your own business is not an easy task. I'd advice you still do that bank job this year bit you can still be making enquiries for the business.

Oga Please Am begging you in the Name of God don't even think of it Do you know what 450 is? Don't try it oo cos God will never Forgive you, keep working there, keep making more money from them, Lee serving huge amount then, start using that money to buy landed properties, there are businesses you can invest your money on and still work in the bank, rather than resign keep your cool and triple your money

@tosinntoyin Source for a reliable person to stay with your children. And invest your money in the capital market. It's a better way of saving money because it entitles you to a yearly dividend. And get a place closer to your workplace to reside. And every weekend you can always go home to visit your children.

Tosin, tosin, tosin...aw many times did i call you? if you love yourself and your kids, don't quit that job now. 450k per month is not beans. Not many businesses can generate that amount as profit a month. Better start aggressive savings, like 350K a month for the next 2 or 3 years. You will be having over 10 million in your account. That's what you need for now. If you can do it for 5 years, you will have over 17 million. That's when you can be thinking of quitting job and starting your own business. Don't use your own hand to destroy the good opportunity God gave you. Don't let village people enter your head. traffic stress is nothing compared to the stress of doing business. business in nigeria is not a bed of roses, don't let anyone deceive you. the government itself is a shark that hunts small businesses to kill and destroy 24/7.

Re: Should I Resign My Good Bank Job And Start A Business? by Nobody: 6:39am On Jun 02, 2020
Would have said yes, because with that you'd have opened up a vacancy for the unemployed.

You can do both however. You don't necessarily have to be at your place of business before it succeeds. An author once wrote "if you have to go to your business daily it's no longer a business it's a job"

Speaking of which, you are complaining about being transferred, if it was your own business that' happened to be at the other end of Lagos due to cost of operations or something how would you go about it?

The billionaires you hear of today have business interests across the globe and there are also members of board of corporations which could have meetings they would be obligated to be present at they don't complain they just accept the challenge and map out strategies to tackle them.

Success doesn't always come easy. So you also have to go hard on it. In conclusion all I see are opporunities lying at your feet. Don't let your thinking hinder you from maximizing them.

It won't be easy to start a new business and nurture it to a profitable level with this present covid-5G. Instead look for a way to relocate close to your new office and change your children school. I will not advice you to rush into business under pressure and under unfavorable circumstances

Hello Tosin, I empathize with your situation and provide the simple advise that you should not quit your job. Two million right now is not enough for you to start a business and equally sustain you with the children.
If the place is too far, try get a small apartment close to the branch and go to work from there. Do not make the mistake of starting something and entrusting it to someone, they will wreck the business without an iota of care. Invest your 2million savings in money market or any other secured investment while you seek opportunities in your bank for transfer to a better place.
The new branch might also present opportunities that you might not have envisaged.

Whatever you do, please do not resign.

I couldn’t have said more than @tosintoyin. ..I’m a HR professional and an entrepreneur, never resign in a haste for any reason. Have a plan A biz and plan B, start plan A to work and manage it for a year. Make sure u do not invest too many funds to start the biz initially. Have a good biz plan and do scenario plannings

All the best

I think you're being too hasty and would appeal to you not to make a hasty decision that will cause you damage because you sound like someone who's about to react ( from negative reactions ) rather than someone who's about to embark on a well planned action. There's a difference. Trust me I know.

I qualify to give you sound counsel as a business operator and would like to discredit any thoughts of you quitting you job because of your savings.

Let's take it step by step

1. Financial security is important. Can you reduce your monthly expenses and boost your savings so you can save let's say 300k monthly, which in six months gives you an approximate of another 2 Million Naira

2. Start the process of setting up a business while you're still employed. This way you can weigh the options if it's for you or not. And can easily convert your salaries towards the establishment of the business

3. Do not quit your job until you've had a well to Houghton out business plan and have put it into effect. Remember money is just half the equation, the other half the business

4. Be more tolerant rather than being irritated because things aren't working for you from a place of convenience. Start thinking positive thoughts about the positives of your job. I'm sure it can't be all negative. Whatever it's costing you, give yourself the opportunity to reflect and tell yourself giving it six more months for proper planning won't do you harm

5. Get a second accommodation closer to work. So you can shuttle between both ends. Friday home till Sunday. Have you considered this?

6. Get a nanny and if you can afford it, get a driver too and delegate some of the duties with the kids care to them.

7. Give yourself time. Do not jump to the next thing until that so-called " next thing " has been fully constructed while you're still maintaining the one that looks stressful.

This is the best advice. Please follow it to the letter.

Keep your job. Change your Children's school to your location inclusive of your accommodation. That way you will not feel anyhow. Also I am not convinced you may succeed for business at first try. You can also juggle business with work. Try businesses that has to do with graphic designer and white board explainer. Business that will make you work from home on weekends and after work. Then invest in genuine investments too for the kids.
