Goke7: They were a pedestal for empower youths with a cascading effects Lemme break it down for you , apart from the education it's provided to audiences and the money audiences won there was also a cascading effect of value WWTBM : Ultima Studio was making over 500million Naira a year from that show from the rent of their studio and equipment and they had 100s of staff from light experts to Make up artist , food vendor , carpenters , drivers , camera crew , editors and Anchors dedicated to the show Project Fame (lemme use Iyanya as an example here so you see the value of the cascading effect ) Apart from discovering musical talents the project Fame show was also a life line to over 200 Nigerians from interior decorators , stage hands , party planners , drivers , dancers , choreographers , musical instruments players, voice coaches , stylist , make up artist , musical mentors and more . Okay let me run you down through the cascade value chain of the participants using Iyanya . Project fame discovered Iyanya who went on to become a platinum selling Artist and his success became a platform from which Unit Franklin found his feet and has also used this to help other people like Tekno and many other , today Tekno is a small industry in Nigeria that caters to the livlihood of many ..Now can you see how these things work 10 Likes 1 Share |

adedayourt: Satellite TV and Content streaming is monopolistic and oligopolistic by nature. Content isn't cheap. It's very expensive. The premiership you watch cost billions in dollars to obtain the rights to. It's the number 1 source of income for the football clubs. Now, because people want to watch these matches, they pay for a TV subscription. If these matches are absent or are a free-for-all affair, who would pay for the subscription? If no subscription, where is the money to buy rights? Without rights, clubs will lose a huge chunk of revenue and this will adversely affect the sport. For instance, my friend years ago borrowed over 10,000 for me in order to renew his subscription simply because he must watch a Tennis Open! Many pay 15,000 plus monthly simply because of the Premiership. Some may pay for Netflix simply to watch Narcos. For some others in days gone by, Prison Break or the Sopranos. If others are now showing it, why pay for a subscription? If no one pays for a subscription, they won't pay through the nose for quality content. Which content will they now have to sublicense? Banks open from 8am to 4pm for a reason. Nightclubs open from 9pm till morning for a reason. Always understand an industry but bringing out legislation. People pay through the nose to get postgraduate degrees in entertainment courses only for people with zero knowledge of the industry dictating the tune. Square peg in a round hole 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Susu888: The local industry would suffer as they would simply stop investing. If not for these guys, a lot of local content developed in recent years would not have happened, and a lot of honest actors would find work hard to come by, more so good-paying jobs at that. I bet NBC is being influenced by politically connected Individuals who want to reap where they have not sown into pressuring these Guys to surrender their intellectual rights. In recent years, an increasing number of Nigerians have started to move away from legacy media companies like NTA, AIT etc, and they are no doubt starting to feel the pinch. |

grandstar: what you dont understand is that when a company buys the right to broadcast football like the premiership, the company owns the right then sub licence it to other station, that company makes money from the license and also the company that buy the license to broadcast also make money from sub from their viewers, so it is a win win situation for both parties. basically that is what the code is all about,i have original content, i can license it out to other companies and make money while the othr company makes money too 3 Likes |

Bagehot: you dont know what you are writing about. you dont understand the code what local industry will suffer. actors will infact become very popular from the new code. The code is simple, if i have original content, i can sell or license it out, meaning i can make money from it if a company comes to buy my original movies and show on their plaform, dont you think the content and the actors in the content wont be popular? so how does that affect actors or the industry. 2 Likes |

kode12: Are we a socialist or free-market economy? If I was in these guys shoes, I would simply not release the locally created content in Nigeria, but rather target other African countries, and the diaspora. How many of Nigeria's bottom half can even afford the internet access to stream online content? And guess who loses at the end of the day? Nigerian artistes, and the local population who enjoy fewer content. This move is being motivated by greedy politically-backed business-men who want to reap where they did not sow. 1 Like |

sexylassie2: Must you be forced to sublicense it? That is what the government is doing in a misguided misadventure to help Nigerian companies DSTV Nigeria if I'm correct is even 60% locally owned. 4 Likes 1 Share |

adedayourt: Where is the monopoly? I spend money to create content - pay writers, actors, and crew, and I'm being forced to give up my content at a price point I cannot even choose Why can't competitors do same? Even in the West where these streaming companies were birthed, they compete on content to attract customers - hence why Game of Thrones was exclusive to HBO, and some Netflix users had to migrate to that platform. Do you know what Netflix did after that? They put their head down, and created even better content. 5 Likes |

kikero: Nipost is efficient? I have items shipped from aliexpress since February. I only receive 1 yesterday, 2 others pending. You may say covid 19, but my siblings that ordered for have received theirs in the UK and in ghana 2 months ago. I guess you might know more of how postal services work in other climes. Do you have a postal box on your street where you can drop your parcels? So if I want to send a letter to from dopemu to Ikeja, I have to go to agege post office to post it abi? Private people now create a solution through bikes, something Nipost has failed to do and Nipost ask for 200k to 2m from them. The Nta runs adverts and should be self sustaining if not it should be shut down or sold. And should government decide to keep it as a propaganda tool, the government should fund it but at who's expense? Why must anyone be compelled to pay TV lincense? Do you see the contents produced by BBC and sabc? Are they comparable to that of Nta? Bottom line is that Nta is on same market with private stations and content providers, they collect adverts also get government funding yet produce crap and yet want to regulate private broadcasters etc. The same government that regulates building codes, standards, taxes yet cannot build subsidized housing and provide for Nigerians to buy yet you can regulate developers. They collect layout plans and dues yet residents have to create the road networks in New developments, make the drainage etc. What about the airline industry, Nigeria also does not have money to run and airline too abi? But they have the mouth and experience to "regulate". 3 Likes |

grandstar: For content creator sublicensing is a world wide thing, it is beneficial to everyone Imagine if i have a catalog of originial old and classical movies, i can sub-license it to other companies and make money Do you think government didnt hear the opinion from original content creators like dstv and others before creating the code or do you think dstv does not sub license or buy original movies from movies maker?, they do, all their movies they show in their channels are bought or license from movies makers This is a win win situation, it is beneficial to all. Infact, it will help dstv in buying more original contents from local producers |

yesloaded: Bro. Try understand the policy....it means not only dstv can show epl,ucl etc...also those premium movies would be available and broadcasted by local uch signals like AIT,NTA....dstv ,Afmagic, multichoice n others soffocates competition through exclusivity, then blead their customers to death...what cost $6 in south africa is sold for $35 in Nigeria...besides,they have no exclusivity in most other countries...let them go and see the thousands of investors they have held down, who are willing to give more for less |

Re: NBC Code: Netflix, Amazon, Irokotv, Africa Magic May End Investment In Nigeria by sexylassie2(f): 12:42pm On Jun 09, 2020 |
Deandean: it means if dstv buys epl or any football right, they must sell it to local stations but how many local stations can afford it. |
Re: NBC Code: Netflix, Amazon, Irokotv, Africa Magic May End Investment In Nigeria by sexylassie2(f): 12:45pm On Jun 09, 2020 |
edoairways: epl is exclusive to dstv because dstv can afford it, how many local stations can afford epl right, if dstv decides to sub license to them |

sexylassie2: u are just being clever by half.... nobody is interested in old irrelevant movies.... The target is genre that attracts massive viewership among Nigerians- its in the article.... Why should DSTV be forced to sell premiership licence to NTA.... these companies spends millions to acquire these rights or produce programs.... nobody should force them to sell their products cheap for whatever reason..... If NTA is interested in any program on foreign cables, let them approach the company and talk business.... not hiding behind FG to steal people's intellectual property..... what stops NTA from developing its own content and competing fairly in the open market.... rather they want to use backdoor policy to steal other people's sweat.... This is the thing I hate about this continent.... 5 Likes |

SarkinYarki: all you have said benefits only a few according to your 100s and 200s in a pool of hundreds of millions and there are other current platforms that does the same. those programs are not the kind of stuff that can wipe out poverty from millions of Nigerians MTN was even exploitative from these shows as millions of poor Nigerians part away with their small change to participate by voting. |
Re: NBC Code: Netflix, Amazon, Irokotv, Africa Magic May End Investment In Nigeria by Deandean: 12:49pm On Jun 09, 2020 |
sexylassie2: Yes...they are forcing them to sub license it in exchange for a regulated fee...baba,the license nor cost, its the exclusively clause they force epl to sign that makes them pay more....if the coast is now open for everyone to either buy license directly or sub license it...competition will increase, prices will crash, services will improve and we'll have options.... |
