buying original movies used to be dead cheap, DSTV could buy the license of hundreds of movies for cheap and make excessive profit.

Guess who inflated the price, IROKO TV founder, he was paying $3200 per film because he was new in Nigeria and didnt understand the market, movie markers saw that and started inflating their prices to sell their original content to him and other streaming platforms, now he got smarter and opened his own studio( rok stations on dstv and gotv) so now he doesnt have to buy movies form outsiders.

when your over price your content, streaming companies have to make all their money back, so it will be a loss for them if they pay to buy a film for 200 naira and they dont make up to 100 naira from subs.

Lion heart wasnt purchase for a whole lot of money, how many NIgerian own netflix account? very few, so it will be a loss if they buy lion heart for lot of cash.

Now govt is regulating the market, this should be the price for content, that is good in a way that everybody benefits, also you buy the license of a movie, sell it to your subscribers first then also sub license it to who ever who wants it for so so price according to the regulated market, that is a good development, it means that movie markers wont over price on their movies and you can make more money.

This things works with demand, why should dstv or others buy a movie that the price is inflated and dont make profit from it.

I have noted some points from what you said.

Truth be told, many of these new players are making massive losses globally. They run on burn rate. They overpay for content globally.

Many of these tv series we watch today resemble TV movies. It is not just a Nigerian thing but global

You still don't get it.

Everyone is free to create content but if you say I must share my content, then why will I bother creating?

How would you feel if the government said you must share your salary with your neighbour?

Netflix has a dedicated server in Lagos that provides jobs for people who pay tax.

Everyone's shouting about DSTV and EPL but they've not bothered about the local league. Even NTA doesn't show our local league but they want to show a foreign League.

When DSTV, Netflix and Iroko invest in content, they are not sure of profit until it's successful and the successful content helps to pay for flops.

I still don't see the problem here. Make it a shared risk. If you spend 1Billion naira in developing content and you have a distributor that wants your content in Nigeria, charge them a 100million for the content or charge them a yearly licensing fee for all your content, let them deal with the uncertainty of their own market as well. The staff employed by these companies in Nigeria is nothing compared to the amount they make. I don't mean to sound insensitive, but they can close shop here in Nigeria, sack the workers if they wish, but they should pay tax. If you want to sell content in the country be ready to do so openly

Do you know what shared risk is?
The reason why providers fund exclusive content is to differentiate their service from the others.
We should be encouraging competition and not stifling progress with our socialist mentality.

Doing business in Nigeria needs God's intervention. The government has its excesses and many investors too are 'chop and die' without a thought for the victims they call customers or workers. Honestly, this country sinks deeper everyday into the slough of underdevelopment, darkness and poverty. It makes my heart bleeds, especially when you want to be hopeful and you are met with hope-murdering tendencies.

Exclusive content at the overall detriment of the nation is a big NO thank you.

If Nigeria's bottom half cannot afford the internet to enjoy these content, we'll the providers can go away with their content as well, it means there wouldn't be that much effect on the people after all. And yes, I agree it's probably motivated by greed on the part of the politicians. Free market is only free where there's competition to force all players to run fair, in the Nigerian context that competition isn't there and the people suffer from it. You can't force content distributors to sell to a particular firm, but you definitely can take away their rights to exclusively distribute whatever content there is to distribute. If the market is so unfavorable to them, let them pull out.

My honest opinion? Our priorities for Nigeria's bottom half is adequate nutrition, health-care, and housing, not movies and television shows. This bottom half cannot even afford smartphones and TVs, talk less of accessing said content.

You won't die if what is lost is not replaced. How much does Netflix generate as revenue from Nigerian users, how much of that amount does it pay to Nigeria in the form of taxes? Big companies cannot continue to monetize our large population while offering nothing of substantial value back into the system. If only Nigeria was in a better place, the government ought to demand outright distribution rights from these companies for their content at a percentage. Tech companies will always scream and throw tantrums but the truth remains that these guys will still make a killing in profits after all said and done. Don't make it seem like they're helping Nigeria.
The entertainment sector contributes 10% to GDP and employs thousands.

It did not get there because of NTA or channels TV.

You don't know what you are playing with.

You really have no clue do you?
Let me break it down for you. Capitalism isn't perfect but it's way better than socialism.
When companies fight for exclusive content, it means writers, producers and all back stage production crew get to eat because they are people willing to pay for those services.

Would you be ok if the government told you to share your salary with 5 people? You know, share the risk so that's there's less poor people?

I'm sure they'll designate contents that needs to be shared because not all contents can be shared or they stipulate the length of exclusivity before the sharing clause kicks in.

I don't think you read the article

In brief, NBC wants Netflix, DStv and iroko to resell their original content made for Nigerian viewers to other broadcasters, and they are saying no.

If they end up doing so, that means you can access content from these people cheaply. On the other hand , it eats into their profits, hence their reluctance to resell
now lets be business-wise. If u were to be in their shoe, what would be ur reaction? U shouldn't promote people reaping where they didn't sow.

So because Netflix took effective measures (which are not even foolproof) to protect the content that they used millions of dollars to create and acquire, they have become "greedy" in your eyes, right?

Netflix offers you unlimited movies that you cannot finish watching in your lifetime and all in exchange for a few thousands of naira monthly for subscriptions and data, but they are "greedy" for wanting to recoup their investment?

Just when I think Nigerians have ceased to amaze me, they just keep me blowing me away with their mindset every single day!
