There was a knock on the door. A cold shiver of guilt overwhelmed me. Out of shock, I unknowingly removed the pillow from the baby's face, the baby gasped for air before letting out a loud shrill. I wanted to place the pillow back on his face to silence him but whoever was at the door must have heard the baby's cry, it would be too suspicious, I thought.

"Cherry, na me Mama Grace! You dey okay?! Open!" It was our next door neighbor.

I hurriedly threw the blood stained pillow under the bed and went to unlock the door. Mama Grace looked me over and quickly scanned the room before she ran inside to pick up the crying baby.

"Jesus thank you o! You don born...all by yourself! Eh God we give you thanks! You dey okay?" She danced around with the baby for a while.

She called on other mothers in the compound to come assist us. A new razor blade was used to cut off his umbilical cord.

They boiled water for me to bathe with and I got dressed.. The baby was cleaned and wrapped with a swaddling cloth. Mama Grace took it upon herself to take us to the hospital.

As we walked out of the room all my neighbors came out of their rooms to congratulate me. I couldn't even fake a smile in return. I kept on wishing Mama Grace had minded her business, I would have cleaned up the mess and the baby would have been a forgotten issue within a few days.

The baby and I were given some drugs at the hospital and he was given a date for his first immunization.
When we got home, the women in the compound gave him a bath and asked me to breastfeed him. I lied I was too tired and pretended to doze off. They had to feed him with powdered milk mixed with water as he was very weak.

They left him with me to sleep on the bed. I opened my eyes when I was sure everyone had gone. I looked him over. His skin was white like his father's and he had big spiral curls of brown hair on his head. He was Musa's carbon copy. I hissed out loud. I felt hatred towards the baby.

Lizzy and Dina returned home the next day. One of the neighbors had called them to inform them about the birth. They were excited when they saw the baby.

"This one na oyinbo o! So handsome!" Lizzy said out loud as she rocked the baby. She looked at me suspiciously. "Why you no tell us say na oyinbo give you belle?"

The baby seemed limp in Lizzy's arms, I hadn't fed him that morning. He was too weak to cry. Dina and Lizzy didn't take notice of this as they were too excited.

"Does it make any difference?" I rolled my eyes and hissed.

Dina sat next to me and placed a hand on my lap. "Babe, cheer up now...the child is already here, there's nothing you can do about it but to love and care for him. He is innocent, don't use the mistakes of his father to judge him...you don't know who he would become or where he would take you to in life."

I nodded but I didn't take anything she said to my heart. Nothing could make me love that child. It had been one bad luck to another since the day I conceived him.

The baby began to whimper. He sounded so feeble, like a kitten.

"This boy dey hungry, see as him belle flat." Lizzy said and handed him to me.

I refused to take him. "I'm tired."

Both girls raised their brows at me.

"Put breast in his mouth na! The boy is hungry." Dina urged.

You people should leave me alone! I don tire! Make I die on top say I born pikin?!" I laid my head on the pillow and faced the wall.

"Which kind person be this?" Dina clapped her hands in amazement.

Lizzy dropped the baby next to me on the bed. He had started sucking hungrily on his tiny fist.

"Na so your mind strong reach?! Wetin this innocent baby do you?! Pikin wey no know wetin dey occur, you wan kill am for him Papa's sins?!" Lizzy yelled.

Mama Grace walked into the room, the noise had attracted her.

"Why una dey shout? Una dey scare the pikin." She rushed to pick up the baby from the bed. "Ahh! This pikin dey hungry na! See as him light! Abeg feed am." She stretched her arms out to hand me the baby but I didn't take him.

"No mind am, She no wan feed her pikin." Dina answered.

"No worry, no force am...na so some women dey behave when dem newly born...make una try buy the pikin milk dey give am small small till him Mama calm down."

They later bought the baby a tin of milk. He slurped hungrily on the spoon as he was being fed.

I laid in bed all day while Dina and Lizzy took care of the baby. They stopped trying to talk to me when they saw I wasn't responding.

Later that day, my breasts got really heavy with milk and I couldn't stand the pain. I went into the bathroom to express some of the milk. When I took off my bra, I saw that my breasts were engorged and webs of green veins were all over them.

It was too painful when I tried to press out the milk. I gave up and went back into the room. I took the baby from Dina and kept him to one breast.

As he suckled I felt relieved and switched him to the other side.

"Ehen, God don touch your mind..." Dina teased. "Na your blood he be, You be him Mama and na only you he get, take care of am."

After a long session of nursing, I didn't feel the pain anymore. He was already asleep before I detached him from my nipple. His eyes slowly fluttered open and he looked up at me before he went back to sleep. His eyes were hazel, a deep shade of green with a splash of light brown.

He had a small smile on his lips, he looked satisfied. He reminded me so much of his father, my blood began to boil.

I looked at Dina and Lizzy, they were carried away with their gists. I raised up the baby's shirt and pinched him with my long nails till I was sure I drew blood.

The baby let out a loud wail. I pinched him harder again just before Dina and Lizzy rushed over to check on him.

Three weeks passed with me staying at home, doing nothing.

I hadn't given my son a name yet so everyone called him Baby.

Baby grew lean as I only breastfed him when I felt like it. Dina and Lizzy tried their best to supplement his feeding with baby formula but they were not always available to do so as they usually had to go out to hustle. I purposely let him starve most of the time.

"Please don't harm Baby before we get back o!" Dina would always warn me before they stepped out.

I constantly felt empty and grew very depressed. I dwelt on my regrets.

I poured out my frustrations on Baby. I stopped letting Dina and Lizzy bathe or dress him so as to hide the marks I inflicted on his body. I prayed for him to fall sick and die but the boy only grew stronger.

On the fifth week after he was born, I grew bored and decided to find a job, no matter how little the pay was. Dina and Lizzy were out that day. I strapped Baby to my back with a wrapper and went out.

I didn't have an umbrella so we walked in the scorching sun. I used my purse to block the sun from my face, I didn't care if Baby's skin got burnt.

I walked from store to store but there was no job available. Even the few stores that had the 'sale's girl wanted' sign refused to employ me because I had a baby.

I did my best not to cry as I walked on the roadside. The sun started to have a peppery feel on my skin and I was very thirsty. I saw a nearby shop and I entered.

"Give me one pure water and two cabin biscuits." I said to the girl selling.

I turned to bring down baby from my back before I sat on a chair.

"Eh! Aunty see as your baby don red...this sun no good for am! Abeg try dey waka with umbrella." The girl said.

I ignored her. She handed me the pure water and biscuits. I gave Baby some water to drink which he guzzled on. He turned his face to my chest and began using his tongue to lick my shirt. He wanted to suckle. I spanked him angrily and pushed his sun burnt face away. He cried out in pain.

"Aunty take it easy, he still small no dey beat am like that..."

I eyed her with disdain. "Abeg mind your business."

I went on to eat my biscuits. The sun was still high in the sky so I decided to relax for a bit under the shade of the store.

"You dey make phone calls?" I asked the girl and she nodded her head.

She handed me the phone and I dialed Mama's number. I didn't want to use my phone to do it so she wouldn't call me back.

"Hello? Hello?" It was Nkiru's voice. I closed my eyes as tears rolled down. "Hello? Can you hear me?" I couldn't speak. I ended the call.

Nkiru called back and I ended her call immediately. I dried my eyes before handing the phone back to the girl.

Mama and Nkiru would be disappointed and think I am a failure if they ever saw me. They were living a better life than I was. I was sure Nkiru had graduated from secondary school and was waiting for an admission into the university. At least one of us would make Mama proud, I sighed.

I looked at Baby's face with disgust. How will I be able to get my life back on track with this one holding me back? I asked.

He innocently sucked on his fist. His eyes met mine and he gave me a wide toothless grin. I didn't return the smile.

The sun became less intense. I stood up from the chair and strapped Baby to my back. I paid the girl for her services. I was about stepping out from the shop before I turned back to face her.

"You dey sell rat poison?" I asked the girl. She went to the shelf to get some and showed me three different brands.

"Which one dey kill rat fast?"

"Take this one. Na kill and dry, E dey kill sharp sharp and you no go smell anything at all when the rat die."

"Very good." I smiled and collected the poison.

I cried when I was reading the last two updates. My husband was even asking me what's making me cry. It was so really like it happened in real life. Because I knew there are heartless people like her. I was like, see what I am praying to God for and this one wants to kill him. Well done Op and thanks for the update.

I felt exhausted when we returned home later that day. I kept Baby on the bed and laid down next to him. He was very hungry so I allowed him to suckle and we both fell asleep.

About an hour later, Baby's cry woke me up, he wanted to suckle again. I cursed him and pushed him to the farthest corner of the bed. I tried to go back to sleep but his ear piercing cries kept me awake.

I ignored him and sat up on the bed.
"This evil child, you won't let me have peace for once, go and disturb your useless father!"

I stood up from the bed and took out a kettle from the cupboard. I filled it halfway with water and turned on the camp gas to let it boil.

Baby got tired of crying and went back to sleep.

When the water boiled, I poured some into his feeding bottle then added his formula. I took out the rat poison from my purse and mixed in less than a teaspoon of it into his milk. The color of his milk changed from white to a dull shade of grey which made me wonder If I had added too much. I didn't want him to die immediately, it would be too suspicious. I wanted him to gradually fall sick then die.

I waited for his milk to get cool before I yanked him from the bed. The way I pulled him up gave him a shock and he began to cry.

I roughly shoved the nipple of the bottle into his open mouth. His face contorted when he tasted the milk. He pulled his mouth from the bottle and kept on crying.

I got frustrated and forced it into his mouth again. He pulled his mouth away and clamped his lips together firmly.

I hit his bare lap with my hand and a red welt appeared showing the print of my fingers. He wailed loudly, tears fell from the corners of his eyes. He looked up at me like he expected me to comfort him.

"Shut up your mouth, you devil." I placed my hand over his mouth to dampen his screams. "Your mates fathers care about them, only your own is different."

I removed the nipple of the bottle and held his nose so he couldn't breathe. I poured in the milk slowly into his open mouth.

He cried and kicked his limbs fiercely but reflex made him swallow.

"If you like, choke and die." I said to him

I stopped at intervals until I emptied the contents of the bottle.

"Good boy."

His stomach looked distended and he found it difficult to breathe. Tears fell from the corners of his eyes but he couldn't make a sound. Just as I was about to sit him up to burp him. He began to vomit.

I covered his mouth and nose to stop him but it was no use. I sadly watched him spew all the milk. When he was done, I spanked his bottom with all my strength then dropped him on the bed in defeat. He didn't have the energy to cry, he only gave out a weak yelp.

"Why can't you just leave me? I don't want you!" I screamed at him as I cleaned up the mess.

Tears of frustration rolled down my eyes.
"When will my life go back to normal? I can't continue like this."

###

Baby laid lifeless on the floor and blood oozed out slowly from his mouth.

Dina and Lizzy walked into the room and they sighted baby. I wanted to move but my legs felt like they were planted to the ground.

"Jesus! Jesus! She don kill am o! She don kill her pikin." They screamed.

Neighbors rushed into the room and dragged me outside. I wanted to plead with them but I couldn't move my lips.

They ripped my clothes off my body and thrusted Baby's lifeless body into my arms. They whipped my bare skin with twigs and branches. I was made to walk from one street to another while they hurled insults from every corner. Women spat at me and little children threw stones at me.

They stopped when they were sure they had drawn blood from all parts of my body. Dina took Baby's body from my arms before a man put an old car tyre on my neck. Another man moved towards me with a keg and began pouring petrol on me.

I jerked up from my bed and began panting. My chest felt tight.

"Are you okay?" Dina asked rubbing her eyes. My tossing and turning had woken her up. "Go back to sleep, it's just a dream." She yawned.

I shook my head vigorously. It wasn't just a dream. What if it was a revelation? I asked myself. I can't let this evil child be the cause of my death.

"I am going to Lagos tomorrow to see Baby's Father." I said to Dina.
