The best detailing advise indeed, thanks for ur time, u mean for 350K I can get a very good Golf 3 with A.C, gear and engine working perfectly?, I understand I will need to spend a little on the body as per Naija ways of using cars smiley and is the car really perfect for first timer like me?

I cannot guarantee AC from second hand. Except you bought it from "alakowe" i mean office people, who is the first buyer from toks. Reason, most people remove some of the a. C components when they are not using it especially the compressor. You know people who are not learned or who have no strong maintenance culture, do not have the perseverance to maintain a. C components of cars. However look up on jiji, you will still find some who have all the a. C components intact and all you may need is one or two fixes. Because most second volkswagen the a. C blower is always intact, infact some of them can blow heat. But them go don commot the compressor and some of the heat exchanger mechanisms.

Car gurus in the house please kindly help me suggest which car would fit my budget,
I am actually planning to buy my first car as my family is growing big and moving from point A to B is becoming stressful for us, hence I decided to get a very good & sharp Nigerian used car with a budget of 500K max.

I want a car that is very durable, reliable, fuel efficient, cheap and accessible parts, meanwhile I don't want Toyota or Honda as they are too common on Nigerian roads & I also believe they re not the only best car options we can get. Though I am looking at Nissan Almera 2001, Nissan primera 2000 to 2002, VW Golf 3 and Mazda cars from 1999 to 2002 models.

Please kindly help me as I need your car expertise to decide which car to go for ASAP.

Thanking you in advance

Dont deceive yourself about not wanting to join the Toyota band wagon.
Band wagon or not, all you need in a car is SERVICE DELIVERY.
With 500k, you are even giving conditions. See your endless list of conditions.LOL.
Let me be sincere with you, with that budget, even if you have above that i will suggest/recommend you go for Toyota.
Talk of durability, fuel economy, part availability, just name it, yu can be rest assured.

My experience:
8 Years ago, i had a budget of 2m to buy a car.
My eye was on a jeep. Eventually after listening to counsel from my wife, "No be inside the jeep we go dey live ooh, oga use your brain", i then went for Toyota Camry, Pencil light. I got it for 1m. It was a direct buy from an importer.
I have never done any major work on the car, apart from normal periodic maintenance and body work any time i feel like making it look like brand new. If i hear say my car stop for road, na fuel finish, courtesy madam wey no dey check nothing, her own be say, make she enter drive the car. Na she dey always drive am.

A year after i bought my car, my younger brother bought a Nissan product, lovely and posh looking.
4 years after, na the car dey drive my brother.
I once saw the way the car has been maltreating him, i really felt pity for him.
As i speak he has borrowed himself brain, he has parked the car, before the car kills him with high BP.
We still talked about it yesterday.

On the other hand my Toyota Camry which you term too common or "band wagon stuff", is still serving me like say tomorrow no dey.
AC na die, i have never worked on it, yet its always chill. Kick and start every single time. No failure at any time.
Note: Maintenance is key here.

You want durability, fuel economy, cheap maintenance?
Then dont you ever look down on Toyota.
You hear me so?

Go for DELIVERY not Looks or whatever you call it.

My advice sir, your mechanic can best determine whether you can buy at that price or not.

Did you price the car at all? If you haven't still price it. Forget all his sweet mouth. When you buy the car finish, na you get your palaver ooo, and bringing a police can't do anything.

Your mechanic will check the chasis, the engine 1.8 santana, 2.0 aluminium, 2.0 cast. Has it been ringed before? The present state of the engine, is it first body? If second body what is the state? Carburettor? Gear state? Suspensions including shocks, carburettor, electric carb, injector. These are so many things your mechanic will help you weigh and determine the best buy price.

Still on still, tell the dealer you are ready with 350k cash. Then get your mechanic to help you determine other things

OK thanks bro

If you leave Toyota and Honda, you are on your own. Most important thing while looking for a car is durability, fuel efficiency if you are on average, maintenance costs and another important thing is resell value. Toyota remains the best choice for an average earner. Just ensure that the car is in good shape, especially the engine, engine are expensive now, and most of them are not refurbishable. My brother to avoid regret Camry or Corolla should be Ur desired car. I rest my case

Op, before you buy any car for that amount, ensure you inspect the car thoroughly with a good mechanic, and also try to find out why the owner wants to sell it.

I don't know anything about cars, but it seems this car is a necessity that you can't ignore. In that case, I wish you the best.

But if you're trying to join the so-called car owners gang, I would advise you to exercise patients and add more money for something better.

I wish you the best once again!

Op with your budget I will advise you stick to a better known devil talking of Toyota and Honda. Am not a fan of the two and I drive an audi and Benz. But my advise, start with the Toyota or Honda. I believe you will get a very good End of discussion for that price.

To add more, not that other car makes are not good, but a Toyota car that is in good shape has very low maintenance cost, you wouldn't want to spend your precious time in frequenting mechanic workshop, especially this one you are looking for Naija used. Alot of things are normally hidden inside cars (issues)

Dear O. P, i want to help you. Consider my advice one of the best you'll get here.

Since you are starter, never buy any expensive car for a start. Except you are really very rich. Am not sure you have driven very well before self. You will burn clutch and fall victim to high prices of part and repairs. And the more expensive your car, the more expensive its parts and repair billings.

For starters, i always advise volkswagen golf, in this your case, golf 3 will be the most appropriate car. Never buy golf 4 as advised by some people here.

You will find very neat, decent and very workable golf 3 that will travel anywhere in nigeria between 270 - 350k. Never buy any nigerian used volkswagen golf 3 for more than 350k.

Now golf 3 has very cheap parts and is very cheap to maintain. It has very low fuel consumption. And you can always love-vendor it to your taste to make you an average big boy.

To buy any fairly used vehicle, you need a very competent mechanic.
The twist about volkswagen is that "never take a mechanic that repair other brands especially toyota to go and inspect any volkswagen vehicle for a buy" they never know nothing or usually know little about volkswagen. They'll help waste your money. They will not be able to give you a good opinion about the car and its ideal worth against what the owner called it for you.

Since you have 500k to spare, if you buy a golf 3 from between 270k - 350. You'll have sufficient money to fix any fucking fault you might discover later. P:S be informed that there is no fairly used motor upon which you will not spend money to improve to your taste. Even tokunbo self you go spend small money. I have used an ample number of cars.

Now, if you have finally settled for volkswagen golf 3, you can reach out to me, i can give you my personal mechanic that i can vouch for to help you inspect cars and make a "buy" decision. Just give him money he will tell you all the truth about the vehicle. I repeat all the truth!

If you eventually want to settle for Toyota fairly used, don't settle for any less than 700k otherwise you are just buying problems except you dont mind corolla 01/02

I don't know much about nissan.

I have driven mazda 323 hatch back very very well. It moves well, portable and decent. But, i don't know much of the pros and cons. I never repaired it, i drove it for someone.

Enjoy yourself and pray to God for Goodluck on your car choice.

Okay sir, I see your POV

I only wish he can come back and create another thread after buying a 500-600 K car and let him tell us about how it's been faring.
I considered certain factors before jumping to that conclusion.

I) Remember the OP wants and he has limited his option by excluding Toyota and Honda .

iI)Nobody is traveling abroad now oo, so distress sale isn't even, that's not to say he can't get a good car at that range. I wish him the very best of luck, heck I am rooting for him even.

iii) Limiting his options has reduced his spare part availability, and pool of mechanic that have the technical know how to handle the brand he eventually goes for.

No be car, na today. You fit just dey drive make you hear kpra kpra kpra kpra engine belt don cut and nor be Toyota or Honda you buy.

That being said I truly hope he gets a good one though, good car dey give person piece of mind.
