Hello House,

Please i would like to ask a few questions,

My application is an online-based type and i will be sorting the Tuition fees part of my POF and a Sponsor will cover living expenses.

1. The sponsor statement is a Pension type, would like to know if this is permissible?

2. Since 2 statements are involved, How do i upload 2 statements in Proof of Funds Section?

3. When should one send a statement to the embassy (i.e MyBankTicket (gtb) ), Before or After application submission?

4. Document checklist show 2 passport photos are required, Can i upload the two at once or include them in SOP?

Please kindly reply

Good job.. Thank you very much

ndoeyopbennet:

It wasn't easy for me too. I got in after a year of initial attempt and I was very lucky. I applied for PhD at some universities in Canada in 2018 but was rejected in ALL of them. I had to use the rest of the year to rethink what went wrong and I believe what I did can be useful to prospective PhD and Masters by research applicants. I finally got 3 fully funded PhD offers in my second attempt. I had to select the one with the best offer.

1. Do not write like a Nigerian. This is kind of hard but you should know that the language of Nigerian research is not the typical language of research in the Western world. This is very important when you write your proposal/statement of program. You should try to read as many successful proposals as you can and then model yours after them. The implication of this point is that you should be mindful of your expressions, research interests, how your present your work/structure, etc. Locate the page that lists current graduate students on the department's website and mail current students. Ask them questions about the programme, the admission process, the Professors you can contact and most importantly, ask them to send you their proposals. You can also read the chapter one of recent theses from the department via their online theses repository.

2. If you're applying to thesis-based programmes, you should focus on a concrete research plan rather than personal stories of how you grew up in poverty or how you've always dreamt of studying in Canada and so on. Those personal tales are not necessary for research based programmes. You may probably start with a personal anecdote or motivation for your work but leave it there and concretize your research plan by detailing research questions, gaps in scholarship, purpose of proposed work, methodology, theories to be used, anticipated findings, and if possible, a short working bibliography.

3. You should establish contact with prospective supervisors as early as possible. Many of them select their students months before applications commence. This means that some supervisors already have candidates 3-4 months before application portals are opened. This is why they ignore other mails. If you want to apply to a thesis programme by September, start mailing prospective supervisors by January or February. Introduce yourself politely and attach your CV, transcript, and a short proposal. Make sure the email is customised and, if possible, draw connections between the supervisor's research and what you want to do. Try and leave a very strong impression.

4. Do not limit yourself to one school. Apply to as many as 5 or 6 schools. Initiate contacts with supervisors from a wide range of schools and then apply to the ones where you have supervisory confirmation. Note that some departments do not require you to get a supervisor before application. You should always confirm this on the department's website or with the Graduate Programme Coordinator. In any case, apply to many schools. Sometimes, the gamble can pay off and you'll get into more than one school.

5. Always emphasise what the department can offer you. Since resources are small and the applicant pool is large, you have to establish how your research "fits" into the department. Many departments have peculiar interests or focus. For instance, Carleton University's Department of Linguistics may focus on generative linguistics whereas University of Albert's Department of Linguistics may focus on historical linguistics. You should always confirm this through the staff profiles and strengths. You can also ask the Graduate Programme Coordinator for confirmation.

The 5 points above will only be useful if you have good university grades (strong 2:1 or first class). Your last two years in school are very important.

Feel free to ask further questions.

Just trying to be safe before the VO knows before I apply.

I am just trying to to be sure that the combination of my age, interest in a diploma instead of a university degree would raise a red flag.

Pee2Jay9:
U've not even given out any info and u're concerned about giving out too much info... You'll have to explain to the VO why you now want to study and what you've been doing so far

Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 17 by Brownie1003: 12:37am On Jun 19, 2020
Hello everyone,

I have read page 1 and some other pages in the thread but I am a bit confused with the list of applicant documents needed for submission. Since the application is currently online, does one need to submit all the documents listed? If yes, how do one submit a document that doesn't have an upload folder? For instance, applicants previous employment, National service cert, etc.

Pls someone who has filled the form should pls guide. Thank you.

If you are applying online - you will fill a questionnaire and the answers you give will automatically generate your unique documents checklist. So, don't be scared.

The documents you mentioned i.e. Previous employment, National service cert etc. should come under - Client Information - Note that your main task is to merge the documents (should not exceed 4mb all together).

Your SOP and all your supporting documents that doesn't have a unique upload column should come under Client information.

Hi, jnyuwa02 (Attorney General).

I can see you viewing this topic. It's been ages now. Nice to see you around here today cool

As always, it will end in praise.

Yeah been working hard at my job and at living, not had time to come here for over one year. My admission and full scholarship had to be cancelled by USASK due to the fact that I was not given a visa with my 2017 admission. I just took time off and did other things I enjoyed doing and reapplied again this year for admission and today I received the good news, they offered me admission and full scholarship again for September 2020. If any good news can come out of Covid 19, it is the fact that USASK is shut down and I am able to study online and graduate from Nigeria, as per the school's new policy, should I not be able to get a visa again. This will be more than fine with me and I am more than excited and know God used this covid 19 as bad as it is, to favor my predicaments. So I stopped by here to see what is going on in the house as I would be Canada bound. How are you @Frankrobbn1 and your visa application? It suprises me you are still here for ages. May God see you through.

Good evening everyone, I am enquiry on behalf of my brother.
Please advice on the best route to Canada, if express entry can work.

So my brother is 39yrs old, he's doing very well.

He's got about two businesses, works in the port clearing vessels and makes very good money month. However his qualification is SSCE. Should he go through express entry or study visa?

He's interested in immigrating to Canada with his wife and kids and our cousin.
If it's the money to show proof of funds he has enough to show with proof to his sources of income.

Please what's your best bet?
Thanks alot

God is great! I am super excited to hear your scholarship was reinstated by USASK after your visa refusal. As for me, I am doing great and had to switch my immigration path to AIPP (Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program) as I was fortunate to receive a job offer from a Canadian employer. I have completed the entire phase of the program including receiving my Provincial Endorsement/Nomination Certificate from the Newfoundland Government and signing written contracts with my employer. The current COVID-19 global pandemic has dispruted so many plans/activities including pending applications with IRCC. Therefore, I'm earnestly hoping and waiting to receive my Permanent Resident approval soonest. While waiting for the process to be completed, I do come around here during my leisure period to contribute my quota and continue making a remarkable impact in the lives of others considering that I have first hand experience about the process.

Thanks once again for checking up on this thread, we have indeed shared tremendous knowledge and insightful experiences on this platform overtime. I hope to see you return here to continue doing what you know how to do best.

All the documents I submitted to IRCC was blur due to compression. It was 6.86 MB after scanning then after compressing, it was 3.50 MB. I am afraid my application might be rejected due to this issue.

What can be the remedy since I already have submitted to IRCC ?

Hi Frank,I will appreciate your advice, I'm trying to re-apply for a study visa after I was denied last year, I got a job at an agric firm precisely their business department which aligns with the program I'm applying for (global business management) while I'm gathering the new additional details,I find out that the bank statement I used in my previous application which has good inflow and outflow is not the one that my present company required for my monthly salary, though I pick up my monthly cheque with the HR department.I would like to hear your opinion concerning this issue since the company stated clearly in my JOB OFFER AND CONFIRMATION LETTER that I should always pick up my monthly check at the HR desk? More so,I would like to know if I should add the other account that shows my monthly salary but does not have inflow and outflow aside my cheque deposit or I should go ahead with the previous account or add the new account to my application

Thanks for the amazing compliments and best wishes. I'm glad to hear the information was satisfactory to your enquiry.

Feel free to ask questions anytime and I'll be happy to provide my advice.

Please can you talk more on external organization/government scholarships.

If the scholarship is not from within Canada, you shouldn't bother. They hardly recognise those scholarships except if its a scholarship program which was signed with a Canadian university or with the Canadian government. Nigerian Federal Government scholarships may also fly, depending on various factors. I know people who are studying in Canada with TetFund scholarship or other FG initiatives. However, to be on the safe side, you should look for scholarships from within Canada or multinational scholarships.

To get scholarship from within Canada is also not easy. You are expected to be admitted first in some cases before you apply. In other cases, your application for the admission goes together with your application for the scholarship. There are many Provincial scholarship/funding schemes like the OGS (Ontario Graduate Scholarship) and FRQNT (Fonds de recherche du Québec). These scholarships are usually open to all applicants studying in the province but getting them is not easy. You need a superb proposal and you must demonstrate leadership and research potentials. Sometimes, applications go through a university based elimination process before they are forwarded to the main scholarship board. E.g. Lakehead University may screen all applications for the OGS before they are forwarded to the OGS board.

Apart from Provincial scholarships, you also have access to other public or private funded scholarships such as Vanier CGS and Trudeau Scholarship. Both scholarships are highly prized and competitive. You should be ready for the challenge. Best way to get them is to get in touch with previous winners for advice. Another notable private funded scholarship is the Mastercard African scholarship for Masters students from Africa. Many Nigerians have won this one and it's a lot easier to access it if you meet their requirements.

There are others too that you can access but you should search for them online, on the various websites of the universities (the universities usually have a page for scholarships and bursaries on the graduate studies page), and get updates from other students. For instance, the University of Alberta has the QEII fellowship for graduate students. You can only know about this from their website. Some companies or research labs/institutes may be willing to give you scholarships too but you have to mail them and sell your research to them, especially if it aligns with their general aims. Individual Professors can also give you scholarships if you make a case for that.

Do not limit yourself. Try everything you can and you may be very lucky.

Note that my suggestions above are under the assumption that you're going for an academic Masters degree or a PhD. If you're going for other programs, they may not apply to you.

Truth is I wanted to use the basis of having a very good undergraduate result to apply for Masters scholarship.

From your experience and all you have said, It actually sounds tougher than I actually thought.

Thanks alot
Let him make his wife the applicant for the study visa if she has a university degree.

Wow, I feel scared already.

Thanks
Truth is I wanted to use the basis of having a very good undergraduate result to apply for Masters scholarship.

From your experience and all you have said, It actually sounds tougher than I actually thought.

Thanks for the clarification.

Don't be scared bro. I felt scared too. The truth is that these things appear tougher than they are. Don't be discouraged. I advise you to apply for as many scholarships as possible. Regardless of how difficult or competitive they are, many Nigerians have won them. I know a Nigerian PhD student who won the Vanier scholarship of over C$50,000 per year. He's at the University of Alberta. He didn't even make a first class. He was lucky and had a good proposal. If he can do it, you can too. Just be positive and make sure you have all the minimum requirements.

May the odds be in your favour.
