Personally, the ‘real’ marriage for me is a civil one not traditional or religious. However, I am not going to begrudge or judge Christians on how they wish to practice their faith.

For those citing Jesus at a wedding, Christianity didn’t exist then, Jesus participated in Jewish customs and attended a wedding ceremony that was probably Jewish.

Each religion have their way of joining two couples and those that practice said faith should be allowed to follow such practices without judgement.

I know for Catholics, a priest blessing your marriage is important, it’s one of the sacraments a Catholic observes while they’re on earth, the last one is death.

This is a big thrash... I am a Northern Christian.... My parents and Pastor must be involved in my wedding.... It must be held in a Church for well wishers blessings and it's not a sin. In as much as we do it for the glory of God....As for reception, one can consider it optional, but in my area, we are not stingy as in reception many people put in their best to cover all the expenses. Example, groom friends can contribute 100k, bride's friends at least 50k, those we appointed as organisers take care of canopies, drinks, etc....Women fellowship provides for kitchen utensils and part of food....At least one can get 400k in the reception.... Though all are not Paramount.... My pastor told me it's not compulsory for reception to take place.... But we value it in life because three important events happen in ones life.
1. The naming ceremony, you didn't notice because you were a child.
2.Your death...you didn't notice because you are no more.
3. Your marriage, this is what you witness and you know it as you are matured...
Can you see the reason why people take marriage serious... Though it's not good to be indebted but try and enjoy that day to the fullest with what you have....In addition, we don't rent a hall as the church compound is large with a good shade....My life my business; you are disturbed, your headache... It's not a sin...A good reception must be held during my wedding.

Thank you so much for your enlightened submission on this matter. Just to add that in the Catholic Church, the couple are the ministers. The Bishop or Priest or Deacon only represents the Church. The two witnesses are present to witness the coule's exchange of consent. Rings placed on particular fingers are signs of a married person. Or else how will one know a married person in today's world at first sight? That is why cheaters fling or hide their wedding rings.

Christianity never complicated wedding. The human mind did.

What is Reno even talking about? Jesus was at a Wedding FEAST. Water was changed into wine there. Even in Africa, Traditional Wedding is preceded with FEASTING.
