The Akwa Ibom State Police commissioner, CP Imohimi Edgal had threatened to arrest and prosecute parents or guardians who engage their wards in street hawking.

He said the decision was taken following the spike in reported cases of rape and defilement in the State noting that some of the minors were sexually violated by their so-called spiritual fathers or persons in authority in the course of hawking.

In a press conference held at the command headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia on Wednesday, CP Edgal said the command would invoke the provision in section 30 (2C) of the Child’s Rights Act which prohibits the hiring of children for hawking and also prescribes a punishment upon conviction of up to 10 years in prison in section 30(3).

“The Command warns that any parent or guardian whose child or ward is sent out to hawk will be arrested and prosecuted in line with the provision of section 30 (2C) of the Child’s Rights Act which prohibits the hiring of children for hawking and also prescribes a punishment upon conviction for 10 years imprisonment in section 30(3).” The Statement read.

He added, ”the Command is not only poised to ensure justice but will also ensure that the victims will be given the needed protection, medical attention, psychological counselling, and other supports necessary for their wellbeing.”

He, therefore, enjoined residents of the State to report cases of rape and gender-based violence to the police.

I can remember this CP Edgal back then as a CP in Lagos, he was proactive and communicates well with the press. It was his time badoo gangs were apprehended in Ikorodu then. He's able to deliver. But I'm sure the state will be able to provide another means for the masses if they are kept off the street? Man must whack

The way we Nigeria constitute nuisance just because we want to do business is so terrible...people will build house put shop for fence,,,on the street , on road and every corner people are selling too...No law and No regulations, And I have not seen any govt thinking of re modeling our environment in this directions

But the main thing is for the country to be good , so we think less of all these petty trade that can barely feed us

Do the Deac. care to know how those families are surviving, Banning may not really be the solution but knowledge in entrepreneur and capital to start really matters. The TRUTH is Majority of these people are Akwa Ibomite its depicts the level of poverty in the Land

Please allow them to survive in their peanut because you wont feed their families after banning during this period of global pamdemic.

I'm yet to meet someone that likes hawking on the road. The truth is nobody likes hawking on the road, na poverty condition dey cause am. Fix the poverty and street hawking will die a natural death. Laws of Cause and Effect, Laws of Action and Reaction. You can't cure a disease by hiding the symptoms of the disease. Nawa! ........................Anyway,
