I liked them years ago. But looking back, they are simplistic.

My favorites are Guy de Maupassant, Gustave Flaubert, Tonie Morrison, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Bronte sisters, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Dickens, Wolfgang von Goethe, Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, W. B. Yeats, Jonathan Swift and Guenter Grass.

Irish writers are just too good.

Good list you have here but most of the authors you listed
Charles Dicken
Emile Bronte
Jonathan Swift
WB Yates etc and classic writers in Literature...As a graduate of English Language/ Literature, l read those as part of my course of study..

By the way, my favorite classic literature writer is Thomas Hardy...His ' Mayor of Casterbridge' and '. Tess of D'Urberville' are pure delight..

This is akin to asking a father to choose which among his sons he loves best. A paterfamilias worth his salt will not do that.
I will list 5 of my favorite authors of all times.

1. Lawrence Block
2. James Hardley Chase (Renee Brabazon)
3. Peter Cheyney
4. Chinua Achebe
5. Dan Brown

This list can alternate anyhow and I would not mind

Ps: James Hardly Chase wrote 153 books and I have read all of them!

MODIFIED: I am surprized no one has mentioned Agatha Christie!! The most published author on the face of the earth dead or alive

Send me a Pm via mail so I can give you a site.
There is no book written on the face of the earth that you cannot get there (As long as the author is recognized internationally)
Type in the name of the book (must be spelt correctly) on the search bar in the website and the available E-format would come up.
Then you download.

I always prefer the E-pub format because I have an app called supreader installed on my phone where I read with ease.

Would appreciate if you would help me with links. Actually looking for African pacesetter series novels, titles like Sisi, Naira Power, Agony In Her Voice, A Kind Of Marriage, those have been hard to come by.
Please mail me at callmeadams01@gmail.com
Thanks

There are very many wonderful books by great authors.

The more widely you read, the more you discover. Obviously others like T. S. Elliott and James Hardly Chase are up there.

Dickens perfectly captured the essence of Victorian age. His books and activism lead to social changes with respect to child labour and some other social issues of the time.

I feel that books from non-English speaking world are not that appreciated by Nigerians.

There is a wealth of literature from the Francophone, Iberian/Lusophone, Germanic, Slavic, Hellenic and Italian world. Both historical and contemporary.

We were forced to read them in school to pass exams and it's not a memorable experience.

It happened to the best of us cheesy

My advice is that you should try to read those books again. I bet you will enjoy them.

I have become a voracious reader. But while I was in secondary school, I didn't enjoy reading literature books. I was more into figures (mathematics was/is my favourite subject).

But when I entered the university, I began to spend on literature books because I found that I could find a reason to associate the orderliness of mathematics with a well written literature piece.

And so, I read all those books we were forced to read in secondary school, including Anowa by Ama Atta Aidoo. I now like all those books because rereading them made me appreciate the beauty of those books and their great diction.

I guess you have the impression I'm a kid or indomie generation the way you talk down to me...( I find your comment offensive by the way)..

And for the record, l was 46 in May..

I read my first novel (James Hardly Chase) in 1985 when l was in primary 6..Had to hide it from my dad because the rauchy picture of the model in lingerie on the cover page would make my dad think it was porn..

So, l know what I'm talking

Novels were and still are my things..

My apologies. I can't really guess ages from photos. I actually thought you were in your late twenties or early thirties. If I talked down to you it really wasn't intentional. I apologise.

When I used to go to church, our pastor banned all youths from reading James Hardley Chase books cos of the pics on the cover, so I can relate about what you said about you and your dad.

I am overjoyed to see people mention authors from Heinneman's African Writers series.
I especially liked Peter Abraham's "Mine Boy". Very expressionist and real.
African writers held sway in the late sixties to the late '80's,I have read almost all of them.

Notable mentions are authors published under Pacesetters Publishers like Agbo Areo, Kalu Okpi, Victor Thorpe (The Worshippers), David G. Maillu (For Rabeka and Mbatha), Nandi Dlovu (Angel of Death) and many others!

There are also great authors published under The Fourth Dimension Publishers Like our own Igbo author Obi C. Egbuna (Diary of a homeless prodigal)

William Shakespeare and Professor Wole Soyinka are my best playwrights, Edgar Allan Poe is my best poet. I don't read novels much so I don't have a best novelist but The picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde and the Alchemist Coelho Paulo are my best novels. My worst Novels ever are The old man and the sea by Earnest Hemingway and No longer at ease by Chinua Achebe. These books traumatized me from reading novels again, I hate them Sooooo much.

Same here. These two novel are absolutely nothing to write about.
