Um, its 450,000 naira = $1600
His friend went overseas for virtually the same role, he was doing in Nigeria and presently earns $7000/month for remote jobs.
I have been in thoughts... Hence i decided to ask..

If we use PPP (Purchasing Power Parity), $7,000 is more than 450,000 in terms of the standard of living.

A quick question I want to ask and know hearts of peeps.

I have a badass programmer pal. Full stack engineer. Recently did a job for someone, and made some real good cash. Like up to $120,000. The money came from building software for 3 microfinance banks in the country.
He earns over 450,000 Naira as salary here in Nigeria as well. We got talking yesterday and he's telling me he cannot stay in Nigeria, that he's resigning immediately after lock down for airports are over.

His argument is 450,000 Nigerian Naira equals
1,162.97 United States Dollar, wheras in the US / Canada for instance, the salary is way higher.

Question is what do you think ?
Bro... This thing I will tell you is from experience!!
If that your friend don't have anyone over there or a job waiting for him, he should just maintain his 450K... It's not always greener at the other side, I guess too much of Nollywood has eaten deeply in the minds of Nigerian that whoever leave the shores of the country becomes made automatically....
I have 2 friends currently who were doing fine in Nigeria, eventually they became self made millionaires, but the thought of leaving Nigeria engulfed their cranium, they shaah left, I wished i can send our WhatsApps conversation here... As I'm talking to you now, Na me de send them money sometimes just to feed oO... The image of Nigeria has been tarnished beyond repair, Nigerians are simply tagged potential criminal as long as you came there to hustle and not to spend...So I usually advice people "If no better thing carry you go there or you say na hustle, e better make you use your visa money take start biz for here"

But Grace differs... From your write up, your friend has already made up his mind, Programming is one of the best skill anyone can acquire, I just wish him Good luck

If I was this good, i will leave at the slightest opportunity. Because as a programmer over there, your money increases with your increase in experience and skills and you can easily switch between companies for higher pay.

While I understand those that come with tax and living expenses argument over there, they should also be aware that there are some programmers that earn as high as $300k per annum. So even after they pay tax and rent, they still have a lot left as savings and can keep on investing.

Now look at naira devaluation. 6million per annum was about $40k about 6 years ago, today at the black market rate of 450, it is about $13k. Don't forget that the cost of cars, phones and some other things we buy increases with the rise in dollar, so the argument that, "are you not spending naira here" is not a solid one.

Most people here don't understand how the USA works....lol. You can be making 200,000 dollars a year and not be able to save 10,000 dollars a year. You can be making that amount and still be in debt, I love how innocent and clueless most Nigerians are when it comes to life in America grin grin.

Now the koko, the question is not whether he should leave Nigeria but how? If he plans on using visiting visa, he'll be on a long thing, it might take him 5 to 7 years to even smell $80,000 USD per year. If he's very talented and already has a job offer with H1B visa then he might be luckier and reach his potential a lot quicker.

I have seen a lot of guys with dreams of gold and el dorado come here and end up being stuck, they have no path to citizenship, begging white women or akata to file for them. Those who fail to plan, plan to fail!

True to it - with that pay you will be able to afford more things in the US- for instance you will be able to afford a brand new car very easily unlike in nigeria.

But let your friend ask around, research on the possible disadvantages of living in the US, living there as a black man & living away from home and decide whether being able to afford more in the US is worth it.

He should go. I was assuming he already had the job. If that's the case then, after tax, he should have 70% left ($84k). If he is wise he should:

1. contribute fully to a retirement plan (e.g. 401k), up to the $19kmax pre-tax, and usually employer will add in up to 4%
2. save half remainder salary every year. $32k. This can buy/build property in Naija after his first year abroad, which he can rent out.
3. live frugally. Do not start living like other middle class Americans - that leads to perpetual wage slavery
4. buy a good used car, like a Camry, not more than $4k in cash. Let your friends laugh at you. You're buying US stocks and Nigeria real estate.
5. don't flex girl.
6. ideally, stay there for 4-5 years with an eye to settle back home. Your investments will be earning for you even if you have no job in Naija.
7. only when you're back in Nigeria should you start a family. Wife and kids in US will wipe out all your earnings.
8. I say don't flex girl. You're not there to fall in love and spend 20 years of your life living to feed others.

America embassy and other foreign embassies in Nigeria will be quick to give you visa once you have a good monthly income and a reputable work cos they know you are not going to live in their country illegally. Some don't even know what they are saying. A month rent in us is someone's one year rent in Nigeria and these people be taking in another language. In US. you are a nobody just another person. You don't even know the psychological impact. For me, 450,000 a month in Nigeria is better than $5k a month in us.

The dude has marvelous skills.
For his kind of skills, I know since he is well paid here. No issue no hassle.
The dude should move abroad and flourish there, unlike here in Nigeria where his skills will be grossly undermined.
He will be massively cheated. They will even say, there are people like him or even better. But over there he will earn good money, more exposure, more prosperity, leading to happy life, if the guy self sabi woman, him go marry born pikin. Them go burry am whella for there unlike Nigeria. Where dem go excavate him corpse throwee go another place, use the land go build church.
Useless country that is Nigeria.

I know someone that went to Canada, left a 1.2m per month job in nigeria, had already built his house in Nigeria and he is not regreting it. In fact he regrets he didn't leave earlier. So we need some nuance to your friend's story.

LOL.

1. A programmer will make more than $5k monthly by far.
2. Even if he makes only $5k monthly........$5k in US will go much more than N500k in Nigeria and he will save more than he will ever save in Nigeria.
3. Forget how much he makes in Nigeria.......this country na suffer.

What is really important is for him to leave legally if the opportunity comes because if he plans to be an illegal immigrant he will be jumping from a frying pan to fire.

So, a black youth from a universally recognised "shit hole" Country will migrate to a developed country and miraculously start earning 5k-10k dollars monthly. Guy, dem never tell you the koko. Get ready to be doing menial/odd jobs for 5-10 years b4 you will accustom yourself to the new reality and if God smiles at you... you could start earning that 10k monthly

That's why I said one man's meat is another's poison.

Some people are very okay to leave a 1m per month job in Nigeria, then travel to Canada or US to earn minimum wage, aslong as the new country has a sane environment, they do not mind. If they earn more than minimum wage or get a professional role, that is even better.

While others prefer lots of wages and continue live in a disorganized country than earn lower to live in an organized country.

He has not being able to get a good job for around 3 years. He is currently working (I think) in a bank call centre. He was a senior staff in a Nigerian bank before he travelled. He is now considering taking a student loan and return to school.

Abroad works for some, it doesn't work for others. The OP's friend might find it easier though as programmers are usually in demand. Programming is not an easy something.

Funny how he didn't decide to return to Naija when things went south grin

Anyway, if he must take up loan to return to school, he should try venturing into a field that is very relevant in Canada, so as to have greater chance of landing great pay in Canada.

it depends on why you want to go. Are you going there because you want to earn more money or going there because you want to flee the Nigerian economy(which isn’t getting any better) and base there? If it’s because of the former, then you can still do that here with the $120k(N54M) you have in your possession. If it’s because of the latter, then also be prepared to be racially abused(which isn’t getting any better)

That is what majority of them are not looking at.

Someone up there is even talking about student loan. The same loan majority of them spend almost their entire life paying back.

Cost of living in the USA is very very high.

Don't mind them ,people call big money without telling people that in some country ,the more you earn ,the more tax upto 40percent in some european country.when u earn more ,u are not entitled to cheap houses .so u pay more for rent ,unless you want to leave substandard life .Nigeria has advantages ,in naija ,u can do lots of freelance and the money can enter your account without paying tax.in some european countries ,u are sent a letter by the bank and police to explain source of Ur money .you must pay tax, they discourage people from earning much thru tax,it's thru tax ,they redistribute wealth and balance the economy and the gap bw rich and poor.i don't know about America but of Europe. It's good to go abroad for better opportunity, but you need to know about the countries you are going .several things one can do in naija that you can't do abroad .I know many people won't believe it .even if you give some people money ,they will chose to remain in naija .so my advice is for the guy to abroad .but don't put your mind on money lol
