All these plaigiarized Western media articles, sef. Nigerians won't stop disgracing me.

My phone takes a break daily. At least two and sometimes four hours of my day are dedicated to conserving or charging my battery. NEPA sees to it being a daily occurence. For social media, I'm off most of them. The only medium I was truly addicted to was Whatsapp. Facebook never did anything for me because I kept attracting old acquaintances I was never interested in. Yes, my phone is a tool: a tool to chase away boredom. It serves me very well during the lockdown. I have an extra one to ensure at least twelve hours are consumed daily instead of sitting around thinking of mundane nonsense.

You're right. From having alI the popular apps to only Facebook & I just recently registered here. I can very much relate.

The major issue is joblessness. Most people have too much idle time on their hands which they're not harnessing.

I also dont think staying totally off social media is a great idea. There's a lot to learn, gain & catch up on if we can regulate use & split much of our idle time on other productive ventures that add value to us.

Thanks for this OP. Great job!

You're right bro. But I don't actually believe it's joblessness. I think it's more of unseriousness and misplaced priority.

I knew about this long ago. I deactivated my facebook account, deleted my instagram app and never logged in for over 3 years now.

The only social media app I have on my phone is the LinkedIn app which is for career professionals.

We waste a lot of valuable time chasing irrelevant stuff on social media that instead of adding to your life, ends up subtracting from your life. Fake lives

It depletes self esteem if you compare your life to what you see on social media. Always remember that people only show you what they want. And things are not always as they seem.

Thank you.. This is all true, I have had to uninstall some of my social media and left only Facebook because of the toxic and depressing media I end up taking in everyday, apart from the money that I waste on data to watch endless YouTube Instagram and twitter videos, spending too much time there drains you, I just take a break sometimes and I come here(nairaland) to read the headlines and keep up.
LOL u deleted YouTube Nad left Facebook and you think say you dey wise grin grin

I think you are blowing to things out of proportion

Admittedly, it has its negative aspects

But let's not pretend that social media is all about evils

On social media,

1. you make new friends (people even meet their life partners)

2. People apply for jobs and get them

3. People share ideas and learn too

4. It keeps people busy when they don't have anything to do

I can go on and on

Whenever you say anything related to science, make sure you mention your source

The only reason I still facebook is because of the news content I get there. Its much easier and faster than going to individual websites. There are also some very educative groups there. E.g Nigerian nostalgia 1960-1980, Nigeria pre independence groups and the likes. Just yesterday I found the transcripts of the ABURI ACCORD in one of such groups. Even some physical interactions is time wasting without no single benefits. I could leave social medias and spend all my days partying gossiping, sleeping or other non productive ventures.

Your points are nonetheless valid. I don't think it makes sense for someone to be on twitter, facebook, instagram and the others. Best to stick to one. Even nairaland too can be time consuming. The best thing is to apply wisdom and ensure productivity improves. While youre off sm, think and learn. While youre on it, make sure you learn something impactful there. Learn to sift through the tacha, bobrisky tonto and other rubbish news.

Like they say, never get high on your own supply.

Their aim is to keep you on the app without a moment break, cause the more you stay, the more money they make.

In return, you end up wasting valuable time you should use to build your talent, skill, or business.

When I was still within the claws of this monster, reading books was a problem.

When was the last time you grabbed a book to read?

You probably can't remember! When was the last time you went out, to network and meet new people?

I am not saying that social media is evil or bad. I am saying that it can be as dangerous as cocaine, if not watched.

I want this to be an interactive thread. I'm ready to help and guide you to overcome this addiction. Feel free to ask any questions.

Proof?

Social Media was created to be addictive.. Every day, new lines of codes are added, psychologist and experts in human behavior are employed, to tweak the program in order to enhance longevity. If you're not the drawn to social media, you're lucky. But there are billions of people who are. Even NL can be addictive. The aim is to use these platform as tools, but not everyone can adhere 100%. Which is why sometimes, you just have to uninstall and breath some air.
I am addicted smh to nairaland because of news and updates but other social apps I seldom check... FB ones in 4 weeks or two sometimes months and sometimes a year, Instagram has been deleted I have been gaining nothing from that app. Twitter ones in a week or two for gists but nairalad!!! May God deliver me... Only check when I am less busy though.

I learnt this a long time ago. As a rule, I periodically go offline.

There was a time when I was having a downtime and couldn't bear to see other people's lives in my face... everyone else seeming so cool and happy, and I wasn't.

We're past that now, but even then my social media use is strictly regulated! For IG, I don't do random scrolling. I have specific pages I visit, because they are educational and mindset building. And I don't spend too much time there either. Read for a while, and then move on. Other than that, I only visit when I have stuff to post.

It's why my read receipts for WhatsApp is turned off, too. If the other platforms had a way to turn off views, I'll do that, too. Because in truth, it's all of those little things that turn one into a person who constantly seeks validation.

I'm fond of writing long epistles, only because the ideas that flows through my brain can be somewhat overwhelming.

In that case, I'm going to try and make this article short and to the point. That way, I don't lose your attention.

Now you're asking, how is social media ruining my life?

You probably have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. installed on your phone. Who doesn't?

Ask yourself, "How much time do I spend using these apps every day?"

When you're arguing with some strange online warriors, posting and watching tons of videos and memes, do you know how fast time fly?

Of course you don't, cause these platforms were created to be addictive.

If you're not using these online platforms as a tool, chances are you're using it to activate your dopamine.

It's stronger than meth, cocaine, heroin...It's like a drug you might never overcome!

Right now, you're alone. Perhaps lying on your bed. If I'm to go through your minimized apps right now, I'm certain I'll see these social media apps.

Oh.. A message just came in that you're about to check, right?

Ahhhh...!

When was the last time you slept early? Better put this way, when was the last time your phone took a one hour break, without you touching it?

Probably when you're sleeping!

You're so bored, with a very short attention span that sometimes, you find yourself depressed.

You're probably looking for reasons to close this thread, cause it's so boring! Oh yes! Your dophamine level is now getting low and its frightening.

Social media is killing you! You know it, but you're too weak to do something about it.

Every minute you're checking your messages, your notifications.

You want to know if that picture has gotten enough likes, or if that online warrior has replied to your comment.

While you're busy brushing up your social media lifestyle, your skill, talent, and career are dying.

How am i so dead accurate? Because I've been there.

You either use it, or it uses you. Do you know that the creators of these social media apps don't even use their apps?

They don't even allow their children to use it. They know the truth, how addictive it can be even to the most discipline.

I learned the hard way, and the enlightenment changed my life.

When I removed these social apps from my phone, I felt free. I felt happier! I was more productive, and richer.

Oh! I said this was going to be a short article, but look how far you've gone. For the first time, you are paying attention!

In that case, I am here to share my experience, and to help you overcome this addiction that's about to ruin your life, just like it nearly ruined mine.

This purpose of this thread is to help, cause this is a pandemic that the world isn't tackling. I have nothing to lose or gain creating this thread, but you have everything do gain.

Apologies for any grammar error or misspelling.. This isn't an English class, but an enlightening class that will change your mind.
I'm quite sure you mean well for people. Kudos.
